Extremely slow performance since upgrade
-
@mib2berlin Secure DNS is there but no ECH. In Edge this is enabled via this switch: --enable-features=EncryptedClientHello
-
@pfine
Hm, no such flag in my Edge developer, Chrome or Chromium on Linux, I will check later on Windows.
If this is a experimental feature developed by the Edge devs other Chromium browser will not get it.
They have a really astonishing development pace.EDIT: Not on Windows Edge either, don't say you use the Canary build of Edge.
-
@mib2berlin No just the regular official build, may be a Windows only thing. Looks like this started testing back in '22: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/you-can-now-enable-encrypted-client-hello-encrypted-sni-or-esni/m-p/3600372
My official build passes the Cloudflare test with the switch posted above.
-
@pfine
Ah OK, this is a command line switch not a chrome://flag.
This work only with Edge, so proprietary Microsoft code.
To be honest if I want to surf save I use my VPN service and login in to Romania or something, then all browser on my system are save.
You can make a feature request but if the Chromium developer does not implement this we will not get it, I fear.Have a nice day, mib

All those Vivaldi users who complain slowness have NVidia GPUs? Or am i wrong?
Old 8xx series GeForce mobile GPU here. I have not noticed any slowness in Vivaldi with dozens of open tabs. But I don't use the workspace I just use Vivaldi with regular tabs on 1-3 windows.
Why would the GPU matter? Browsing is mostly a CPU job. I have an Intel Core i7.
Vivaldi 6.4 on Win 10 (x64)
-
@Viking872 Why GPU matters, because broken interaction with drivers it can cause slowdown of UI adn web page rendering.

But people can also configure Vivaldi to simply use the built-in Intel or AMD GPU right? So they can avoid using the Nvidia GPU, but I haven't read all the thread. I do have to say that after PC reset and reinstall of Vivaldi 6.5, it has become quite snappy, even after 24 to 48 hours. So I wonder if data corruption plays a role, after you upgrade several times. But if this doesn't happen with other browsers like Edge and Firefox, it's not acceptable of course.

No, there is no way to assign a GPU to a special program. You can only disable a GPU in Windows Device Manager for all programs.

Vivaldi browser is quite resilient. I have updated both stable and snapshot builds many times over a longer period of time without them performing less.
Do you tinker a lot with your Windows installation at large?
-
Hi, maybe this setting gets lost in this thread, on newer CPU Vivaldi and other apps switch to Eco mode.
It doesn't matter on my systems but other user report a huge performance impact.
Add--disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess
to your Vivaldi desktop shortcut.
Cheers, mib -
Hi,
I've been using Vivaldi for years and never had any major problems but over the past few weeks it really suffers from instability. The whole window will freeze randomly for a minute or two, gets redrawn (turns while and back before coming back to normal), and after recovering page scrolling will become very choppy, assuming it won't crash a few seconds later again.I'm on 6.5.3206.55, Windows 11 23H2, Ryzen 7 5800X, AMD RX 7900 XTX, Samsung 980 Pro. OS and all drivers fully up to date. No other problems with my computer whatsoever.

@protofik
Hi, this sounds like a render engine crash, Vivaldi freeze but bit is a crash you don't notice.
Disable the hardware acceleration in System > Webpages to test this.
Maybe you will find crash logs, check:https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/troubleshoot/reporting-crashes-on-windows/
Cheers, mib

Good to hear that according to you, performance problems should not be caused by upgrades. And I have recently performed a PC reset, and I don't believe I have changed any settings that should affect browser performance.

Yes I tried it a while back, but it didn't really seemed to help. But as said before, I do believe Vivaldi 6.5 has become more snappy than 6.4, I now only have to restart it after about 2 days. But what also seems to play a role is the amount of tabs that you open.
And I wonder if Vivaldi will ever fix the problem with hanging in memory after close, this really is unacceptable, seems to be a major bug. I keep having to kill Vivaldi, because Vivaldi's parent process keeps hanging. I read that Thorium is one of the fastest Chromium browsers, perhaps Vivaldi's developer team should take a look at it, to see how it's optimized.

Hi, on my Windows 11 and Linux installs, in total 12, no process stay open if I close Vivaldi.
Did you check chrome://settings/system if background apps are enabled?
Extensions does this but you see a Vivaldi process in the task manager.
I test Thorium, no difference on my system, as fast as other Chromium browser in practice.Cheers, mib

Vivaldi never hangs on my system if I have only a few tabs open and if Vivaldi hasn't been in memory for long. As soon as hours go by and I open more tabs, then Vivaldi will refuse to close normally. I NEVER had this problem with Vivaldi 6.1, it all started with 6.4 and sadly enough it hasn't been fixed in 6.5. Plus ''the run apps in background'' feature has always been disabled. I also performed a PC reset and Viv 6.5 has been freshly reinstalled.
I also don't see how any extension can cause this problem, I still use the same extensions as on Viv 6.1, of course some of them have updated to newer versions, but I doubt they play a role. I also don't use any new security software (Windows Defender and SpyShelter). What I can try is to test Vivaldi 6.1 (which is still installed as standalone), I'm willing to bet it won't hang in memory with the exact same extensions.

Hi,
Despite V was freshly installed, did you Sync'd at the beginning, or tried on a Clean Profile for a while so noticed that?If not,
Create a Clean Profile and navigate for a while from there.Also,
Haven't seen you System Specs, do I missed?Add it of not.
Thx -
@RasheedHolland
A clean profile meant no extensions all settings default.
The setting ''apps in background'' is enabled by default.
I have a test session with 400 tabs with the last stable, it close in one second and no process left even I run it for days.
Extensions cause 80% of all issues in Vivaldi, 10% is user fault, 10% are real bugs, this is my experience in 8 Years of using Vivaldi and the forum.
And ... this always happen after an update of Vivaldi.
Maybe an extension work with an old Vivaldi version, it jumps 5 or 6 Chromium versions since then. -
Also,
Who tested this?

Haven't seen you System Specs, do I missed?No, I don't use the Sync feature because it doesn't support 2FA yet. I don't think system specs play a role, because like I said, I have been using Vivaldi since v2, never had something like this until Vivaldi 6.4, which also had serious performance problems. But I can of course try to use Viv 6.6 snapshot without any extensions (clean profile) and see how things go. I suppose I can still import my bookmarks right?

OK, so you still think it's an extension? If they can cause problems simply because Vivaldi upgrades to a newer Chromium version, this is quite a huge problem. Because obviously, I'm not going to stop using certain extensions, unless Vivaldi adds certain features.

@RasheedHolland
I can understand this, the problem is Chrome extensions are developed for Chrome and tested in Chrome.
Many work in Vivaldi but other can cause Vivaldi crash, lost user data and so forth.
I remember Minimal Theme for Twitter/X" extension:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/93677/vivaldi-lost-all-my-settings-after-restarting-for-an-update
Nobody can think of extensions can do this but they do.
