I just want to bump this thread.
I will not be installing any extensions because there doesn't seem to be any opensource alternative I can audit.

The great suspender and others of it's name have been used to spread malware and I think it's irresponsible to recommend using extensions. I would rather that everyone use a native feature instead of blindly trusting some extension developer to not abuse users.

@djaddo It is the same thing I am thinking of publishing. It would be a good idea for inactive tabs to hibernate, no matter if audio is playing, except for the tab the user is currently on.

Not yet a Vivaldi user, but is this still not implemented? Seems like such an obvious feature. Currently on Firefox, but had a fallout with the marketing manager at Thunderbird over ethics, and now want to drop everything Mozilla.

Vivaldi could win a lot of users over if it performed well.

I don´t need it, Vivaldi performs fantastic on my stone age laptop on Windows 11 and Linux.
Maybe user use tabs as bookmark replacement have issues but up to 200 tabs I get no slowdown,

I think it probably comes down to the kind of websites you visit. What I've noticed is that modern websites have more and more JavaScript and rubbish running on them (sadly).

It is a HP Probook 2017/18 I bought used but even my old workstation with i5 3570K 16 GB Ram from 2012 work fast.
The only the thing makes engines better than cubic capacity is more cubic capacity.
You really need at least 8 GB Ram to make it work.

Options:

Do not hibernate the lastest ___ tabs.
Do not hibernate tabs with video/audio playback.

Would be also nice.

I think the Tab Suspender extension would pretty much be the gold standard in terms of functionality to be replicated here.

Did you move over to BetterBird or something?

The problem with that scenario is that when you have to close down and reopen the browser for whatever reason, it gets annoying having all those tabs reload even on a recent PC with a high bandwidth connection. Plus in general it save loads of memory to have inactive tabs suspended/hibernate.

I used that until recently. But with Vivaldi 6.1 that extension makes the whole browser crash at startup. Well maybe not everyone has run into that issue but I know I'm not the only one. Another issue with that extension is that it doesn't use the native hibernate feature which can break tabs/content/session info.

I'm now using The Marvelous Suspender. It's ok but not great. The screen capture function refuses to enable and does a double gray out on suspended tabs.

I sure wish tab suspension could be set up natively (that also goes for cookies but there also we have to rely on third party stuff (Vanilla in my case)).

Vivaldi team, some attention to this feature please. You have hibernation, auto hibernation should be easy to implement.
