Drag Text to Tab Bar, Tabs to Search

@xandork It also works with Tabs at the top, if one enables Settings, Appearance:

@xandork
Wow. So what youre saying is they had the foresight to implement it, but didn't check if it would work in normal tabs.or... worst case scenario... it was an accidental feature of vertical tabs, and will be "patched out" in the next update so it follows the reduced functionality of horizontal tabs.
Either way, someone should start a thread and report this as a bug so that this critically missing feature gets the attention it needs. It's seriously infuriating that every other browser can do this but Vivaldi doesn't.
-
@Pesala Ok yeah this confirms to me that it is indeed a bug.
-
Mine stopped working after updating to 6.0, I'll try to roll back and see if it does something.
-
@Aespherture Drag and drop a link into the URL field still works for me, and drag and drop to the tab bar if it is not at the top.
Rolling back to an earlier version is not recommended. It may damage your profile.
Experiment with a standalone installation where it won't use your current profile.

@Aespherture
I can confirm this. Links still work, but text does not. -
Drag text on Plus button in tab bar works in 6.1 Snapshot to start a search.
-
@DoctorG Great to hear they solved that bug! It really broke my workflow not being able to drag-and-drop text.
@Vivaldi Team, How about the ability to drop text anywhere on the tab bar, without having to aim for the icon? This is how it works in literally any other browser, so much easier!

The empty part i uses to drag the window, wish you want can not be done easy as the user interface of Vivaldi is not the same as Chromium.
-
@DoctorG I don't see any technical reason why drag-and-drop anywhere on tab bar would be difficult to support, or conflict with any other feature.
Dropping something onto an element does not conflict with dragging the element. Those are two different actions and can perfectly co-exist, like in every other browser.
I know Vivaldi uses it's own interface engine, but I'm pretty sure current behavior is a design choice, not design limitation.
-
@dvincent There was already a feature VB-47973 "Cannot drag links and text to the tab bar to open a new tab", which worked in 2022 browser and is broken now. Looks like a regression in 6.0 and 6.1.
I try to ping a dev the next days. -
@DoctorG Please allow me to clear up some confusion
-
In Vivaldi, drag-and-drop text only worked when dropping onto button.
Version 6.0 introduced a bug, which broke this feature.
As per your own report, version 6.1 solved this bug. -
This forum topic is about a request to expand drag-and-drop zone to all tab-bar and tabs, like in every other browser.
Which is much more functional because you can drop text into specific tabs to perform a search or open a link. Also, you don't have to aim for the little button, as long as there is empty space on your tab bar you can use that space as a drop target or as a drag target, no conflicts there.

@dvincent My short answers.
The first item: Yes.
The second item: broke in some version in Stable and Snapshots of 2022. Ad i can not explore when that broke.I already asked internally dev team. Stay tuned.

Thank you so much. Have you received any response yet?
-
@dvincent No response and progress to get a fix.
-
I'd still love to get this feature, I'm very used to opening links and searching in a background tab by drag and drop
-
@voyager1sun Now I can drag selected text into address bar or search bar.
-
In the current version of vivaldi, you can drag the text to the empty space of tab bar to search the text EXCEPT you have the title bar at the top. I am not sure this is a bug or an intended behaviour.
-
oh I see that is so weird...
I thought drop to search didn't work because I was using "tabs at top"
you have to be a sniper to use "tabs at top" with drag and drop.. there is just this sliver you can drop on next to the rightmost tab... but the wide open area to the right of that, is a no-drop zone
conversely, with "tabs at bottom"... you can drop it anywhere to the right of the tabs... in that wide open area.. and it works.
