Images are saved as .webp instead of original format (JPG, JPEG, PNG, etc.)
-
In the endless fields of the Internet. I managed to find a hint on how to save files. Unfortunately in your case ( reddit ) adds its information after "https://*.jpg".
But for those who have nothing in the address bar after ( *.png or *.jpg or other format ). You can do the following.
Just add a question mark after the format in the address bar and press enter. And it will download the image for you in the specified format.
Example: https://staticdelivery.nexusmods.com/mods/101/images/48105-5-1507676589.png?In closing, I will say. Yes, there are sites that try to pass the image as ".webp" and force us to save it in that format. !BUT! if even despite all this you can download the image in its original format simply by adding "?". Without manipulations with "HTTP-Accept header" and others. Then this is a question for the browser, not the site.
Just my opinion.

I literally just noticed this option on google's search engine which filters between copywrite images (webp) and images that are open source (i.e. jpg, png, etc)
Hopefully this helps in some capacity but it's so shitty imo that we've come to this part of the internet where you can't even download a f*ing picture anymore.

@asutcliffe25, webp and webm contents can really result in a problem. They certainly make it very difficult to share images on the web, even when it comes to simple memes.
Naturally an author of an image has the right to want to protect their images, but for this there are other measures and it also depends on the use that is given to this image or animation, a decision that should be left to the user's choice and not to a multinational that hosts this image and puts a copyright by system, especially if in the end it does not work at all as there are countless methods to avoid this change of format using a simple screenshot or convert an animation to gif or mp4 with, for Exmpl. Ezgif.
It is something absurd, when I make some modifications to an image, obtained from sites like Unsplash or Pixabay (GPL and CC) and want to share it freely with, for example Imgur, it puts it in webp format yes or yes for others, reason why I currently use vgy.me for this purpose, which maintains the format with which I have uploaded this image.
Other authors put their images for free download in a reduced format or with a watermark and in HD only for a fee, which in my opinion is acceptable. -
Hey, when I try to download an image by rightclicking an image then "Save image as..." It automatically sets the download to .webp, even if the image is a .jpg file originally. I can change the download name and therefore the type of file but its extra work that shouldn't need to be done. What can I do to fix this?
Still saves as .webp.

@LucasHahaFunny Edit: I removed the broken link.
Welcome to the Community. Here are a few links for your bookmarks that you may find useful:
-
@LucasHahaFunny For me on Windows 11 the link saves as JPEG data format and .jpg file ending.
-
@DoctorG Yes, here too, if I save the link from the post by @LucasHahaFunny, but if I open the link and right-click to save the image, it is saved as *.webp.
-
@LucasHahaFunny said in "Save image as" downloads as .webp instead of .jpg, .jpeg, or .png:
I can change the download name and therefore the type of file
Changing a file's extension does not change the file type. It just becomes a *.webp file with an incorrect extension.
-
@Pesala Ah, yes, i see now what is meant.
I tested only Link Save As. -
@DoctorG It is the same issue as described in Display Webp Files as Original Format.
-
That is not a bug in Vivaldi, all Chromium related browsers act like this as they can handle webp images, the same does Mozilla browsers.
It is a server-sided feature.I can download by link as Jpeg if i use program
wget
. But that is only a prof of concept that the server send different dat for different browsers and apps.
@LucasHahaFunny
Servers can detect the data format browsers can handle, and image/webp is one of these, thats why you get WebP instead of Jpeg. Why do you need Jpeg? Your program can not open WebP?
A extension Save Image As save as different file type, but i do not want to test.
-
I get the same as above - using Ctrl+S to save I get JPG, right-click and Save As I get WebP.
Content-type when using a browser is:
content-type: image/webp
When using curl I get:content-type: image/jpeg
This is because curl sends:
accept: */*
While the browser sends:
accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,image/avif,image/webp,image/apng,*/*;q=0.8,application/signed-exchange;v=b3;q=0.9
The browser tells the server it supports WebP images, and the CDN server is happy to send a WebP since they are usually much smaller in size and save bandwidth.
So if I make curl send the same:
$ curl -I -H "accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,image/avif,image/webp,image/apng,*/*;q=0.8,application/signed-exchange;v=b3;q=0.9" "https://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/05e97d16e7fb53439a4222e53dcba47d4d31dde8/c=0-97-1280-584/local/-/media/USATODAY/USATODAY/2014/06/04/1401911998000-AP-Color-Cosmos.jpg?width=3200&height=1680&fit=crop" HTTP/2 200 content-type: image/webp
So this is some CDN optimisation stuff, it will prefer sending WebP images to clients that support it.
As to why Ctrl+S gives me a JPG while "Save As" gives a WebP, it's probably some "quirk" of Chromium browsers.

And on Mozilla 107.

I support this.
How many donations, do you need, to attain conversion software, so us graphics-folks can save images in peace, with no need for extra work.
My example:
Integrated into the browser, with a setting, where YOU choose, which format, you prefer for saving images online.Default being .webp - able to change at an instant.
-
@OliJen Donations will not change the priority of a feature request. Upvotes might help, but this request has only two votes after more than three years.
Upvotes are not an important factor in deciding what gets done.
Decision-making Process

As you do not want a webp image, the best way would be to remove from HTTP accept header browser sends to server the image/webp. Then you get not webp images anymore.
Solution
Extension SimpleModifyHeaders
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/simple-modify-headers/gjgiipmpldkpbdfjkgofildhapegmmic
https://github.com/didierfred/SimpleModifyHeaders
exported config SimpleModyfyHeader.conf to remove the webp from being downloaded.
{"format_version":"1.2","target_page":"*","headers":[{"url_contains":"","action":"modify","header_name":"accept","header_value":"text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,image/avif,image/apng,*/*;q=0.8,application/signed-exchange;v=b3;q=0.7","comment":"Remove WebP","apply_on":"req","status":"on"}],"debug_mode":false,"show_comments":true,"use_url_contains":false}

@OliJen conversion software for which destination formats? Graphics has so many and more: EPS, PDF, AI, JPEG, TIFF, AVIF, GIF, APNG, JP2K, XPM, HEIF, BMP, PNG, PSD, …
Such feature would be more investment in time for Vivaldi devs.
It is easier for users to use extensions to get rid of some wrong content on servers or use external conversion software.
Sorry to say, but users working with graphics should have learned over the years and decades how to workaround image format issues..I can understand such wish with image conversion, but usually such will not be added by Vivaldi dev team if there is a easy way for users to solve a problem with external apps or browser extensions.

What wise and thoughtful words. Users should get this into their heads before asking Vivaldi to do something, or better said, before wanting Vivaldi to do everything.

@barbudo2005 Alrite calm down, Jamal. You can flirt in the DMs. I was simply asking, and I'll escort myself to G's Webstore.
Have a better day.
