Tab Bar Below Address Bar

@curiousd said in Tabs in the logical position, on top of the active window, below other bars:
"Every single program that has tabs sets them against the active window, below any other menus. EVERY program. It makes no sense to not have that option in a web browser. Firefox used to have that as default and Safari still does.
(Fun fact since Firefox changed the default tab setting their userbase has declined 4x, and Safari's has increased 4x)
There are 4 options for tab location, none of which I would use. Given that there were previously working css code mods to make this happen, it should not be much effort to implement, and it is the preferred position for literally hundreds of millions of users."
We're a few less than hundreds of millions, I'm afraid, but I'm positive we're more than just a few.
What is on offer here, and in Firefox - that's not "choice".
Is it really that hard to implement REAL choice of bar positions, like in "bar A at pos 3, bar B at 2, window content at 5, etc ..."
I'm one of those who ditched Firefox for Waterfox.
If any developer wonders why there's so little feedback like ours: I found it quite hard to guess search terms appropriate for this issue, to use in a language I'm not native to.

@zajaa I searched, but could not find any other topics like this one, which has only two votes. Clearly, it is a low priority. You may find some method to get what you want in the modifications forum. (This is a very old topic).
Add this link as a web panel, and try different search terms to look for other topics in feature requests.

This will, hopefully, pass through Askimet's spam filter:
"Every single program that has tabs sets them against the active window, below any other menus. Every program." (CuriousD)
@ Pesala & shifte:
thank you! But I'm not willing to, again, start editing configuration files just to get a bars layout that once was default in every browser & still is default in any other tabbed program, if the new layout does not have any advantages, as far as I can tell. -

... maybe that is partly due to the spam filter? I'm positive the tabbar position issue is good for increased blood pressure and such stuff ... ;-))
-
@zajaa That would only apply to those few who prefer it in an illogical position.
Due to Fitts’ Law, it is much more efficient to have the tabs at the very top of the window. I realise that a small minority do not maximise the Vivaldi window, and a few others use a native window with a Title bar at the top.
What increases my blood-pressure is users expecting/demanding that Vivaldi should be just like their previous browser, in which case, why switch?
Switching a tool that you have used every day for years is sure to require some adjustment, like moving house, or changing your car. If you're not willing to make any effort to adapt, your blood-pressure may rise.
-
I'm sorry, I sincerely apologize for having caused so much confusion.
-
mentioning "blood pressure" was meant to suggest a reason for the scarcity of results when searching for this issue, considering the somewhat strict settings of this forum's spam filter. I myself only admit to a slight increase when realizing that my previously written comment had been refused by "askimet.com" (?)
-
I am! one of those few others who insists on having a title bar on a browser, and sometimes use my browser in unmaximized windows. That is on Xubuntu, meaning: Linux with an xfce4 desktop.
-
In cases like mine, Fitt's law would lead to a different assessment of the tab bar's position - do you agree?
-
I guess you're not telling me I shouldn't insist on those decisions (in "2"), or are you?
-
I really do not! demand of Vivaldi to be just like my "previous browser".
I would plead for Vivaldi to provide a checkbox in the settings to make it behave the way it behaved before the last update.
#############
Not mentioning all other browsers I tried & discarded, my browser usage history goes like:Firefox from around 2001 to version 78
troubled by repeatedly having to struggle to return to my preferred settingswitched to Waterfox when Firefox switched to proton
Waterfox having a check box for the bar positionInstalled Vivaldi as second browser some months ago, it had it's tab bar in my preferred position.
Which changed with the last update [4.3.2439.65 (Stable channel) stable (64-Bit)]
#############Again: I do not demand Vivaldi to imitate any other browser, I'd like it to offer a simple user setting to be able to keep (!) it's previous layout.
As far as I can remember, such thing has been done before. -

My very first thread on these forums quickly turned into a long discussion of why I don't like to upgrade very often. And this issue is exactly why: thanks to the great users on this forum, I've always found some custom CSS or JS to move things where I want them, but nearly every time I upgrade, everything breaks again and it takes me hours to work out what the magic incantation is to fix it this time. If this option were added, my upgrade reluctance would probably vanish overnight.

Indeed. The entire reason I want to move to Vivaldi is because Firefox breaks my CSS customization every update. I don't expect Vivaldi to have every option, but this one is just so basic. Like, it was standard in browsers for years!

And, just so the devs are aware this is still a problem, I have once again upgraded (5.2 => 5.3), and my toolbars are all borked again, and I'm once again here on the forums looking for help to fix it. The lack of this feature continues to reinforce my irrational notion that upgrading is Bad, because it costs me time and frustration every time. I would really love to feel like upgrading was easy again.

@barefootcoder See the update to my CSS mod here: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/598603

This is to be expected. The UI is undergoing an incremental rebuild. Custom CSS will take a beating, I'm sure.

Completely understandable. The point of this thread (as I understand it anyway) is to lobby for making this particular custom CSS unnecessary: if this feature could be added as an option, I would have no need for custom CSS at all.
-
This definitely should be added. I was about to make a feature request for this before I found this thread.
