Add mail account without SSL/TLS
-
@hutiwush Best would be to make a bug and/or move this to feature request and people can vote for it there.
There people can vote for it and we can prioritize.
Quick question, is this connecting to an internal server? Is that why you need no encryption method? -
As nothing has changed so far, is there a way to circumvent the need for SSl/TSL for my local webserver. I still cannot create an e-mail account within the vivaldi browser because vivaldi requires a SSL/TSL connection. But localy that's like asking for a visum when you need to go to the bathroom. This is complete overkill. Please allow for a normal connection. Cant be that tricky.
So .... any progress here??????? Damit.

I'm trying to add my email account on Vivaldi.
The incoming server uses 143 port and it requires "no security method". It means that I should leave that field blank but Vivaldi seems imposing SSL/TLS without giving me the option to modify.
Is there anyone can suggest how to fix it? -
@Fabri69
We don't support plaintext authentication for security purposes. Is this for a localhost server? -
@gmg yes it is
-
same here:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/62044/cannot-create-mail-account-grayed-out-local-serverbeing forced to ssl/tls using a lokal server is equivalent to being forced to ask for a visum when wanting to enter your own bathroom ...
So please let vivaldi use our own local environement without hassle
-
@gmg Of course an option MUST be given to the user NOT TO USE SSL/TLS for a connection. Vivaldi makes here a decision instead of a user as if the developers of Vivaldi were educated in Redmond. Shame on you.
-
Many of us use own IMAP servers or an authenticated secure method to connect to a network with an IMAP server. A decision to not to provide an option to the user to have a connection to the IMAP server without security may have an educational purpose but serious people perhaps do not need to be educated by developers of Vivaldi. I think a missing option for defining access to an IMAP/SMTP server with NO security is a serious drawback for Vivaldi. Not because no security might sometimes still be safe but because the developers of Vivaldi here make a decision instead of the user, which in a world outside Microsoft Windows not the developers but the user should make alone.
And yes, no security may still be safe.

@mracz welcome to the forum.
Imagine going to a party where drinks are served for free, taking the mike and shouting "the music sucks, shame on you!"
You may have a point, but in most cases you won't be the hero.
-
@WildEnte Well I appreciate all the hard works and all the saints but the issue here is not what needs to be developed further, but rather to let the user set up his own security. I am leaving now this party because the drink offered here to me was consumed at once by someone else. Cheers!

We don't support plaintext authentication for security purposes. Is this for a localhost server?It makes sense to protect 99% of the users from accidentally using unencrypted remote servers, especially over WIFI and other public networks.
But one further usecase for having unencrypted authentication (plain old POP3/IMAP protocol) support is for local spam proxies like PopFile, some of which do not support encryption. In these cases, there should be no security issues if you restrict the unencrypted connections to localhost/127.x.x.x.

Ability to use STARTTLS would be great. ProtonMail's bridge requires this to work.
-
@LongTimeUser
There is quite an other use case: Exchange: locked down to only MAPI. You'll need some tools to translate MAPI to IMAP, SMTP, calendar, and address book access. Not to mention all the push things Exchange allows and which have to be translated too (most of them have IMAP equivalents).Most of these tools do not implement encryption -- would not make sense: encrypt, decrypt while communicating over local sockets only. What a waste of CPU time.
Whoever is able to grab communication on local sockets, will be able to do anything, because this one already has compromised your local system.

Would love to connect to my corporate account using DAVMail (https://davmail.sourceforge.net/index.html). It works very well with my Thunderbird setup, but I'm lost in setting this up in Vivaldi Mail because there is no choice of setting an imap server without SSL/TLS.
-
@JoergP I've seen DAVmail mentioned a couple of times and would also like to try this to back-up my wife's company mail (used to be accessible with IMAP, now it's only visible through webmail or Outlook on Android).
Do you have any experience getting DAVmail to work with the latest annoying login methods? In my wife's case (outlook.com/owa/[company name]) she has to enter a username and password, then gets an authentication screen prompting to type a number on her Outlook app (which doesn't seem able to do this), so she has to go to "alternative" methods and select to get an SMS code instead. I'm very curious if DAVmail is able to handle this utter fustercluck of a login procedure...
-
@mossman I'm afraid I can't speak to that. Our corporate mail doesn't use TFA so far.

Same here. I want to use vivaldi mail at work with exchange protocol through davmail. But it fails at adding account because of SSL/TLS.
Is there any bug/feature request?

With a pro type outlook OWA account and a personal account with protonmail... I literally can't use vivaldi mail and that's a real shame.

@developers
DO NOT patronize your customers.
Did it never occur to you that fumbling around with selfsigned certificates (which would "solve" the ssl problem) is way more prone to faults and therfore for security issues than using IMAP without ssl within the users LAN (to be FORCED to use ssl when the server IP is 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.x.x is very close to pure idiocy) . So your whole stance regarding security is bogus and blind.
Get your act together an enable IMAP without ssl. Do it until yesterday!!!
