What’s Vivaldi’s business model?
-
@paul1149 Vivaldi had an arrangement with Qwant some months (perhaps more than a year?) ago but Qwant began blocking Vivaldi as "out of date" and "possibly insecure" and that was the end of that. Qwant actively refused to correct this mal-coding for months. I don't know if they have cured that but, in the meantime, Vivaldi's UA now identifies as "Chromium," so Qwant lets it in anyway.

@code3 , where? on FerenOS? No, loading fine.
Why not, a lot off FOSS has some proprietary parts, APIs or use them. Nothing worth to be uses in larger apps is free from this.
Ok, Vivaldi is designed Proprietary Freeware, but it's in a limit where this designation don't make sense. When Trace and other soft with copyright or MIT Licenses can be in GitHub (Trace also has a closed and blocked part for payd premium version, but is in GitHub).
Maybe we need a new definition of OpenSource and diferencce between OSS and FOSS.
NASA also has a large catalog of OpenSource soft, but some of them restricted to goverment and cientific centers, not for public use, and other , realy FOSS for the free use for everyone (fE WorldWind and others9
There are a lot of OpenSource Licences include such with TM protection.

Its not so simple and the limits are often not so clear. -
@Ayespy Interesting. Thanks for that. Why on earth would qwant care which browsers are accessing its search function? I've never seen that before. This doesn't seem to make sense.
-
@paul1149 You're right, it doesn't. But multiple users reported it, and when Vivaldi approached Qwant to get it fixed, they were not interested.
-
@Ayespy That would be enough for me to switch back to DDG, except that I found them censoring certain political images during the last election, and when I brought it to their attention there was no response.

-
@catweazle Interesting. Thanks.
-
@catweazle - Whoogle is interesting!
Presearch?
https://presearch.org-(never had issues with Qwant - but use Presearch and DDG more these days - Whoogle might make me change that habit).

Brilliant income model providing a brilliant browser. I'm changing my search engine after reading this to support you guys

@catweazle said in What’s Vivaldi’s business model?:
I'm happy with Whoogle
Just by looking at the homepage, I'm not. See where it says "F*** the algorithm!". That's not what I want to see, on the homepage of my search-engine.
But it could just be that one instance. If it is, then you probably shouldn't link to that instance. Because that's going to turn people off to Whoogle. Most people won't know what an instance is, and won't understand that Whoogle itself isn't responsible for the profanity on the homepage.
//MODEDIT: censored profanity
~pafflick -
@eggcorn , yes, it's only this instance with this message. but I don't see this, because I use it only in the adress bar, my homepage and new tab page are empty.

Yandex is terrible company they are using almost viruses to ads yourself, very aggressive advertising policy. I left opera because they set after every update this search engine by default, very annoying. And they have own browser which will be promoted in search queries on all their sites. Do not know why you work with them.

I'm converted and loving it!

@gwen-dragon
Well to its philosophy, at least. Remember that Vivalid, like me, was a priest, though he was far more creative than I am!
-
Thank you for using your time and passion to give us this amazing interface!

Do you guys still making a good profit? Feel kinda sad that I been using Google searches for a while

@wildchild85: Try startpage, it uses Google as backend. It is just a proxy between you and Google, to avoid tracking from Google. You give up personalized search results, because you are not tracked by Google. However, the quality is the same as anonymous Google search.
