True Alphabetical Bookmarks Sorting

@sjudenim Iβm afraid we need to live using workarounds to make some simple actions that the dev team is not willing to add now or never.
Wherever you see that a feature is tagged as In Progress, it may get done soon or may be already available in the Snapshots.
This one is not even in the top ten, and is not marked as In Progress.
I wonder if the devs are using their product other than playing with Philips Hue.
-
@sjudenim The dialogue seems to be using the manual sorting no matter what you set. Maybe thatβs rather a bug than anything else.
-
I have my bookmark folders on my bookmark bar. Most I want sort by date, most recent at top. A couple I want the contents in a specific manual sort for the reasons of how I use those links. Otherwise, the folder becomes useless. I should be able to have the option of sorting each folder independently. Other browsers have this. With all the hype on Vivaldi being functional to individual needs, this is not and is a very important feature to how I use a browser.
-
All other browsers have the function of permanently alphabetizing bookmarks, the parent of this browser (Opera) does, and this was quite a long time ago. They add an email client to the browser, but cannot add an alphabetical ordering function for bookmarks. I do not understand.
-
@guigirl Yes, I have had to go the same way. Use an extension to perform such a basic and necessary task in a browser. And worst of all, the competition has had this function for years. And the most incredible of all is that the old Opera 12.18 had the function of ordering the bookmarks with a wide variety of criteria.
-
@regrabables It took six years to add the email client and it is still in beta. Opera was under development for many years and had a much bigger team.
Even the Bookmark Bar was not available in the first versions of Vivaldi. The small team has done a lot in six years, but more remains to be done.
-
@eldaehc Mine is adding new folders to the bottom.
-
@guigirl Mentioned an extension called Tidy Bookmarks.
I couldn't find that one, but I found another called SuperSorter:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/supersorter/hjebfgojnlefhdgmomncgjglmdckngij/related?hl=enOne click of a button, and all your bookmarks are sorted alphabetically.
NB! There is no undo, so make sure you really want everything sorted!
-
@bjarteao Thanks for the clue.
Working very well.
Saves much time as before I exported the bookmarks, deleted them, sorted them in Firefox and reimported again. -

My current workaround is to add a Web Panel for the "chrome://bookmarks" URL.
If you type that URL in the address field it will redirect to the "native" Vivaldi Bookmark manager.
However, if you use it as Web Panel it will use the one from Chrome which allows to sort the contents of a folder.

That said, if Vivaldi is not willing to add all of the features and configurations from base Chromium, at least DO NOT enforce redirects of "chrome://" pages to the native "vivaldi://" pages. At least until there is complete feature parity, such as in this case.

Thanks so much for sharing this great workaround, up until now I had been using this extension to basically do the same thing: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bookmarks-commander/knfpajocfeohpaipkfpdbfhgibajfmcf

@petersaints Thanks, that's a great workaround! Just sorted everything except the bookmark bar alphabetically, what a relief

I still don't know why the bookmarks in the add bookmark dialogue are not sorted
And all the folders don't start out closed
