Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default
-
I came here in search of this option, was very surprised that it’s not available. Vivaldi is such a powerful browser, the tab menu has so many customizations but something as vital as this is missing, that’s just weird. I know the workarounds, but if you’re also working with other browsers (especially iOS) they just don’t stick. An option to change the default would make everyone happy.

@yusernamelol Being able to customize menus globally is being worked on.

Vivaldi team!

@stonefre You can customize the main menus in the latest snapshot. Nothing for the right-click context menu yet though.

but when?
It's being worked on right now.

This is standard web browser behaviour. Firefox has been doing this for years. It's an option in most other browsers.
I disagree that it "would create lots of tabs". I know what I'm clicking on and when I want to look at it.Please add this option.

@simonwiles
Hi, there are several ways to open links in the background, I use MMB but there is also Shift+click.
Muscle memory is hard to change and it should be a setting to change it, a long awaited feature for some user.
If open link in background were default in Vivaldi I would think about to change the browser or change habits.Cheers, mib

@Pesala How are you an ambassador with this attitude lmao. "Wah stop complaining" as if it's so weird that people would like a functionality every other browser has managed to implement besides this one. It doesn't matter if you think Opera was the first to come up with tabs (they weren't, tabbed browsing was around since the mid 90s), the fact that every other competitor has been able to improve on them while this version has not is laughable. And your own actions as an "ambassador" make the rest of the team working on Vivaldi look even worse.

@erisian Don't shoot the messenger just because you don’t like the message. I can only tell you that it is not currently being worked on, and tell you what I know about the reasons why.

@Ayespy said in Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default:
My thinking is that since this is the way it was originally designed before it was ripped off and altered by other browsers, and since this is the way it works in Opera12 (made by the developers who invented "open in new tab") and since Vivaldi was founded largely for the purpose of providing safe harbor to users who had been cast adrift when Opera12 was abandoned, they built it the way old Opera users would be comfortable.
I personally, in the couple of years I used New Opera15 et seq, never grew used to "new tab" always opening in the background. When I open in a new tab, it's because I want to go there. Now. But without losing my old tab. And it always kind of pissed me off I couldn't do this in New Opera after it switched to the Blink engine. It was one of many things that pissed me off about the change.
That said, because the change in default behavior was something I could never get comfortable with, I totally understand new Vivaldi users who find the original design of the function uncomfortable, because they have never used it. And for this reason, I think editing menus will come, and this will be part of it. But I think the "out of the box" behavior will remain the one that we old, loyal users of the original Opera expected.Exactly:
- The behaviour is designed this way because that is how Opera 12 does it, and Vivaldi is from the same developer “For our friends.”
- Existing users would not like the default to change. An option needs to be added, which will take time. Allow Editing of Context Menus may come soon, and seems to be the most flexible solution.
- The developers (and we volunteers) understand that users want a choice, but it will not be available until it is ready. We have no control over what gets attention next, so all we can do is offer work-arounds and explain the way things are, and suggest reasons why that might be so.

this is the thing that is going me to make don't use vivaldi as main browser.

I don't know, is that feature too important to take 3 years of vote
anyway I want to open tabs in background using first command in the right click menu is there any addon to do that ? -
@sinfulslave As suggested by @Gaëlle on the first page:

@Pesala Not a good substitute, I'm afraid - I've tried it. I keep coming back to Vivaldi now and again to see if anything has ever been done about this feature request; it never has and it looks like it never will be.
So it's back to Firefox for the foreseeable future.
