Start page/Speed dial as a panel (as a graphical bookmark selection)
-
Consider start page (speed dial) as a page like others to pin it into the panel bar.
Assets:
- You can call speed dial on a used tab and not only from a new empty tab
- You can navigate through speed dial levels (folders) without modifying current tab history
- You have a graphical, elegant, and simple way for the most-used bookmarks : for something often called, think this is better that a little line, with a little favicon, isn't it ?
- Alternative for bookmark bar which is also a selection of most-used bookmarks
- You may get free the new tab page background (for others uses)
Example :
-
I don't see why not, but it's surely not the most elegant way to open speed dials, which are nothing but bookmarks, accessible through the panel, quick commands, address bar, bookmark page and speed dial itself already. Especially quick commands and address bar are faster than opening a panel. I would also look into using a dedicated app laucher, most of which open bookmarks in the default browser as a standard feature. Using the keyboard will always be faster and more seamless than clicking somewhere, because you don't need to strain your eyes to look for something. A matter of taste and habit.

You're a keyboard-centered user surely !
This suggestion is surely more graphicaly elegant than little lines into bookmark manager or panel. This is also true for quick command access !
-The kind of use of speed dial gets far away the ambiguous use of the classic speed dial which become confusing into the page history of the tab.
-The speed dial is a selection of most-used bookmarks which simplify the needs to get one among all of them.
-The selection into speed dial is a graphical suggestion through large simple icons which is better than little favicon and much better than text.
-Clicking is quite easy than key suite ordered even into the quickcommand.I don't really know if keyboard is so much fast as it could seem first. Because if you don't know or remember exactly what you looking for, you have to think and search a lot. Keyboard is only quick for very used page in my mind.
The speed dial is less technical, and surely it's more convenient for the most common users. I see it like a graphical bookmark bar.

This is then a finger problem

If the panel could be transformed into a popup then the speed dial could become such an app launcher I think. I make my own with this suggestion Unanchor panel / Free floating panel / Pop-up panel which is then related.

I found that Group Speed Dial can be used to make great "graphical bookmark" panel.
