Facebook is no longer a default
-
All should be concerned about the invasion of privacy and that peoples information are to be bought and sold as public data for corporations to trade as they feel to do so.
-
This excellent decision made it into reportage in Bleeping Computer: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/software/vivaldi-removing-facebook-as-a-default-link-in-browsers-speed-dial/
News of V continues to spread - yay.
-
If you're not getting paid by fb for that then sure good decision.
If you were, honestly wouldn't care. I use fb only cause other people i know use it.
Adblock, umatrix etc. Not really a profitable target for fb ;P Also was aware of it being spyware from moment I signed up.Still, like I said if you're not getting paid and there's nothing to lose then glad its removed, less support it gets more likely people will switch.

@neocazen: I think you're referring to the sidebar. By default, it contains a button each for your Bookmarks, Downloads, Notes, History, and Window(s), as well as a button to add Web Panels. If you don't like it, why don't you disable it? (Click the "Hide Panel" button on the bottom bar.)
-
@luisanton Not the side, but the one that is just above Speed Dial
-
@neocazen Putting it on the side would actually take more space. You can hide it using some custom CSS.
.thumbnail-image {box-shadow: none !important;}
.startpage-navigation {
display: none !important;}Add that code to common.css. You need to do it on each upgrade.

@an_dz said in Facebook is no longer a default:
@christoph142: Facebook started as a Speed Dial the team decided was a convenience to most users, later Facebook became a partner.
Edit: At least that's what it seems seeing the url of the bookmark used to link directly and then it started to go through vivaldi.com/bk/
Let me clarify here. In this context it's irrelevant for us what kind of relationship was in place with Facebook or even if one was at all. There was a Facebook speed dial that we under the circumstances decided to remove. That's all there's to it.
-
@christian: Right on topic. No matter what there was the right decision was made now.

Watching Zuckerberg live being grilled. Feels even more right now
-
@pesala Ok.
I mean I find this bar unnecessary since Speed dial could have an icon in the sidebar already existing as the history already owns leading to the extinction of that giant top bar in Speed dial -
@christian A great question from the senator to start off with:
Mr Zuckerberg , would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night? If you have messaged anyone this week would you share with us the names of the people you've messaged?
-
Jon, for the other default speed dial bookmarks that you have in place (Such as eBay Australia) does Vivaldi receive revenue every time I visit eBay Australia via my bookmarked link of //vivaldi/bk/ebay-en-au

While this is a laudable decision, I can't help but feel it's come too little too late. It's reaction to a bandwagon, if we're being honest. If you'd done this three or six months ago that would have been something to talk about. Facebook has LONG been a privacy nightmare, not just because we've found out about Cambridge Analytica. But now....? It's as predictable as it is pointless.
Why pointless? Because Facebook are now making changes ot the way they do business, after this latest crisis. This is ALSO closing the gate after the horse has bolted but it makes your move make less sense that it would have otherwise.
Sorry, folks, I know I'm being a bit of a downer here but the cynic in me isn't seeing this as much more than a grab for some low-hanging press exposure. You've been doing some great work with the Search Engines, and the blog entries focusing on privacy matters. Please keep that up - it is really important and very much appreciated.
-
Look. This is why I use Vivaldi. Agree completely with that decision, please keep up the good work. Cheers!

Can you add some free social networks as replacement? Have a look at mastodon(.social) and quitter(.se). Adding these would be great, as they may gain more users making it easier to leave the big privacy invading networks behind.
-
@allo Then the new ones get big and the circle starts over again
-
@luetage Have a look at the mentioned ones. They are federated networks. When the main mastodon site gets to big and creepy you can migrate to e.g. chaos(.social) and continue communicating with the users of the main site.
And GNU social (i.e. quitter) federates with mastodon as well.If you trust nobody you can install an own instance just for yourself and still follow and be followed by users on other sites of the network.
-
Okay, that's nice. Good, even. But why write a whole blog post about it? It's because, well, what good is doing the right thing if nobody knows you're doing it? So Vivaldi is joining the rest of the blogosphere in whacking Facebook like a piñata while it still makes for great PR.
Don't misunderstand me. I do think Vivaldi is being earnest about this. But it's such an easy "courageous" move to make right now, since everyone is whipped up to applaud it during this current news cycle in which Facebook is the bad guy. Listen, I'm not defending Facebook. I think writers like Cal Newport have been on the right track for a long time, and my Facebook usage has been extremely sparse for the past couple years, and only on my PC, not my phone. I'm just saying that Vivaldi's blog has become less about the browser updates and more about how Vivaldi's ethical stances make it the white knight of the Web. Sorry, but it's becoming a little off-putting.

Good. Having anything Facebook related in your website, product or company is very bad for your brand today. That includes Facebook pages, like buttons and so on.
Facebook is tracking and storing data from everyone, not just Facebook users. If you have a Like Button or another Facebook widget on your site or company, you are helping facebook track non-facebook people all over the Internet. You should disassociate yourself from Facebook and not be part of this.
