Open Items from History List in Background
-
In every browser you can open items from your history list in the background/new tab by right clicking the back button to show the history list and then middle click an item from the history list.
I think this is a very useful feature since sometimes you will want to compare something you've seen before with your currently opened tab.
-
@raystanz you can do that both from the History Tab and from the History Panel (Ctrl+H and Ctrl+Shift+H, and more, including mouse). I use the Panel very much like in your use case.
-
@rkzn Yes, but you should be able to do it by middle-clicking on the history popup, because if you are using middle-click to open a tab, that should be what it does middle-clicking on anything that goes somewhere.
The whole point of middle-clicking to open tabs is short-cutting other processes into a single click.
-
@rkzn I didn't notice the history panel yet thanks for that. I still think middle clicking would be more conveniont though. I have my panel closed most of the time and only open it when I'm organizing tabs or entering notices meaning it will stay opened for a longer time.
-
And I heven't noticed the specific request to normalize the use of middle-click (because I rarely do that, I usually do Ctrl-Click), so thanks for reminding me of that
-
Missing feature I use sometimes on the other browsers. The history panel mixes all the tabs' history, not so accurate and quick, it is not a perfect solution.
-
Ctrl+Click on the item in the history list should also work for those who do not have a middle-mouse button.
-
@pesala thanks for the hint!
I can't wait for this basic feature to be added. I've used it in Chrome and Firefox for over 15 years. Likewise the right click context menu on tabs inside of folders in the bookmarks bar. -

It is not the same. Each tab has it's own history items in history list, and history panel mix everything.
It is basic functionality and absolutely very easy to make, maybe 10 minutes for programmer. Do not making it means Vivaldi not much interested in the RIGHT features. RIGHT, not just popular. This is feature, which is must be here anyway, because it's fundamentals of browsers. Absence of it violates the logic of usability.
Some time ago, there is not such thing as middle-click of address in drop-down list of addressbar. Now it here. So what a problem to not make middle-click functionality in other places? -
@asires What you can do right now is clone the tab from the context menu. The cloned tab contains the history, so then you can select the item from the tab's history.

Maybe not, but...

You cannot know that. Unless you are a Vivaldi coder... in which case... go fix it instead of talking about it here.

When you absolute known the absolute and ultimate right option and the whole truth, I urge you to thing about it again. I doubt that you may be absolutely sure about right or wrong features or usability.
On the other hand, if instead of stating your absolute knowledge and expecting us to follow you, you explained why it looks good to you then you would make a possibly strong case.
And I am (almost) absolutely sure of what I just said but who knows...

I would not think of Vivaldi programmers so badly. Not only them can understand their code.

More respect for Vivaldi programmers ). And they can not make some feature because they just want it.
I doubt that you may be absolutely sure about right or wrong features or usability.
Why? I can.

Already explained: "Absence of it violates the logic of usability.".

I just started Vivaldi for the first time and have been doing some initial configuring, like making panels open using overlay instead of pushing the web page to the side.
I also just noticed that the behavior of middle mouse clicking is not consistent in this browser.
- If you middle click a link on a regular page, it opens in a new tab in the background.
- If you middle click a link in your history list, it opens in a new tab, and makes the new tab the active one.
- If you right click the "back button" and middle click a link in that tab history list, it opens the link in the current tab.
The preferred behavior would be to always open links clicked with middle button in a new tab, in the background, which is how it works in Firefox or Chrome for example.
I constantly use the back button history for opening up a copy of a previous page, so this is probably a deal breaker feature for me to start using Vivaldi more often.
Hopefully it can be fixed by programmers or some addon at least, since I like the configurability of this browser so far

This thread can probably be closed and moved to "Done" section.

@raystanz Thank you for the reminder.
- Middle-click opens items from the history list in a new background tab
- Ctrl+click opens items from the history list in a new background tab
- Shift+click opens items from the history list in a new foreground tab
- Right+click opens items from the history list in a new foreground tab
- Left+click opens items from the history list in the same tab
Everything requested is available in 2.2 Stable build, so thread tagged and moved to Done.
