@Steffie I have no problem with native windows. I actually prefer that the UI have a native look-and-feel.
I was simply curious if that made a difference rather than proposing a fix. On macOS, most of the animations are so subtle that you don't really notice them (and I think that's the idea) until you hit a situation where the animation rendering can be slightly janky. I'm totally fine with them on or off. Rest assured that you're not missing out on any mind blowing experience.
-
@luetage: I think you'll find it's called "macOS"
-
@electricduck yep, the blog has been fixed by now, that's why I pointed it out initially
-
@steffie: Yeah, you're right... Let's pretend I put "or transgender, asexual, nogender, alien or whatever I need to add for political correctness' sake..." there as well
-
@Steffie That sucks I haven't booted into Linux for a while, but I think that could be it. I love Linux, so I hope they catch up on it. Same for Mac if they're missing it, cause Mac is all about eye candy.
-
@pesala: I must be blink but I can't see anything like you described to edit/delete posts. I even disabled any blocking/filtering extensions and reloaded the page.....
-
@marekano Maybe you blinked
It might also be a feature of the forum designed to stop spammers and trolls. You now have 3 reputation points, which might be enough to let you edit posts. If you cannot edit posts, you should surely see the blue vertical dots anyway.

@D0J0P This Vivaldi snapshot on macOS has tab animations. You certainly notice the difference when you switch between Vivaldi 1.9 and Vivaldi 1.10.
-
@xyzzy That's good to know. That only leaves Linux without tab animations apparently.

I have the same issue since around 1.06. When I type something in the address field I don't get any suggestions (they are turned on). Also when I type a certain address, say vivaldi.com, and press enter, nothing happens. I have to leave a couple of spaces after a url (vivaldi.com␣␣␣) to make it work. These bugs disappear after ~5 minutes of browsing.
I was lazy to report it before as I was using chropera -
@Barys What sort of hardware is this on?
-
@D0J0P , @Steffie , @xyzzy I'm on Manjaro 17.0.1 and tab animations are working here. They're usually quite smooth, but sometimes do behave as described by D0J0P. They work both with and without native window decorations. My hardware is older:
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 235e @ 2x 2.7GHz
GPU: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS780
I'm using the open source drivers for my graphics card, and I've artificially limited my CPU to a maximum of 1.9GHz to help prevent my system from overheating.Hardware obviously does play a role in how well animations are rendered, but these are very simple animations that, in theory, shouldn't require fancy, cutting edge gadgets in order to display properly. My setup should be more than enough... which leads me to believe the animations are simply buggy and will improve with time. But since they are usually very smooth and work they way I assume they're intended to, I don't mind.
-
@Tiamarth It sounds like they're pretty smooth for you. Usually animations for things like the panel have been buttery smooth for me since they've ironed out those animations back in 1.3 or something. But tab animations are pretty sluggish half the time, and sometimes smooth, so I'm hoping they work on them before the stable release of 1.10, and I've got mid-range hardware.
WillyYu, we're counting on you!
-
@D0J0P After a little bit of testing, I've found that the animation is sluggish much more frequently once there are enough tabs open to fill the tab bar. This makes sense, as that means there is more on-screen content to be animated and therefore requires more resources. I still wouldn't think it would be so much strain on the system that it would slow down that badly, though.
One thing I can say for certain is that the animation looks very nice when it works properly

@aqewz: I never trust Vivaldi in this aspect (at least for now), specially between snapshots. But since I created the habit to manually backup all the necessary files and folders from default profile folder in order to make a clean install, since some months ago I haven't made the standard update procedure anymore.
I always do a clean install.
-
@d0j0p: Yeah, I can see it now. A little sluggish indeed, but it's there. And it's cool!
-
@Tiamarth Yep, I had quite a bit of tabs on my tab bar while testing it out and it did get sluggish, meanwhile other animations in the UI such as the panel is always buttery smooth, which means the tab animations themselves do need some optimizing.
Quick Commands is smooth opening up, but the input of text is sluggish, which others have also confirmed, so it depends on each animation.
-
@D0J0P No, don't conclude that, yet. There needs to be independent confirmation or rebuttal from other Linux users here. TBPH i don't really trust my own assessment on this point. As i have already stressed, this feature is unimportant to me, & is something i'd never heard of or contemplated prior to initially reading about it in our fora/blogs as being on some people's wish list. It remains entirely possible that my own V-SS Deb installation is now tab-animating away like a champion, only that i'm too ignorant to recognise it. As soon as any other Linux user confirms it works for them, i will utterly accept that the problem is me being insufficiently perceptive.

@Tiamarth Thanks for the feedback, As i just separately posted a few moments ago, this seems to confirm that i am the issue, not V-Deb. That said, immediately after reading your post & commencing this reply, i yet again launched a new tab [= SD page]... as each prior time, it simply instantly opened. When i closed it, it instantly vanished. For the life of me i seem too stupid to perceive anything snazzy/"animatey" happening. Oh well. For mathematical averaging purposes the world needs to have stupid people as well as smart ones, & i'm in the former camp.

@Steffie I don't know what to say. I just booted into Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1 x64, which has been newly reinstalled, so I decided to install Vivaldi for the first time on the new snapshot, and the tab animations worked perfectly. In fact, they were shockingly smooth and fluid, but that could just be the new install.
I'm not sure if there's something wrong with your current install. If you want, you can try refreshing your profile and see if it works.
Though it's weird that there's no mention about the tab animations in the blog post itself. You'd think the team blog post would mention something like that, but there's nothing in there are all that talks about tab animations. It only talks about vertical tab width and tab close button alignment.
