Hi, it sounds you try to sync with a Chrome browser, this cant work.
You can sync Vivaldi on different devices, including extensions.

@ericlv13 Please check out the guide on troubleshooting sync issues. Make sure that the issue wasn't caused by a temporary service outage (you can check the servers' status here).

@aspyr97 As mib said, only the typed URLs are synced, not the regular history.
I think what typed URLs means is the information for Address Auto-Complete, or the drop down below the address bar.

@coachcathy There are no Vivaldi "technicians" per se.

Vivaldi operates on limited income and a very small budget. It has a very small team.

There are between 20 and 25 Vivaldi developers and designers, all of whom are busy designing, developing, maintaining and debugging Vivaldi in multiple versions on at least seven different platforms. They do not also operate a help desk. They do maintain the Help pages (F1) as time permits. Once in a great while, an actual Vivaldi developer will read and answer on the Forums. Otherwise, volunteer helpers like myself and your peers in the Vivaldi community try to help each other as much as possible.

@wolfee To tell you the truth, I copyed my "vivaldi-default" dir to my priv-dir, and i wrote a script. every start my vivaldi, my script will delete the vivaldi-default dir and restore it from my backup-dir.

Actually, it seems that the tabs sync rather randomly.... some from outside the stacks appear, some from inside the stacks appear.

@computerjoe That's what I do.

It's happened again. I clicked on the 'Youtube' link on 'Synced tab'. I can't see the window or tab but I can hear the video playing in the background. The other tabs open up, no problem.
I think it's just Youtube links but I can't replicate it, just happens intermittently.

@pesala according to vivaldi://sync-internals, Themes are being synchronized, or at least the current / active theme is.

I want to turn off Themes sync, but keep syncing everything else. I can not see a way to do this in the Settings screen.

On my Mac (where I initially setup Vivaldi and turned on sync), I have a bunch of extra Search Engines defined so I can instantly jump to Amazon, or Google Maps, or Google Images, with search keywords in the address bar. But those Search Engines did not make it over to my Windows installation of Vivaldi, so I am not sure if this is a bug or working as expected.

I see from your link about Search Engines that it appears to be a frequent feature request, so I'll just assume "working as expected" for now on Search Engines. 😛

My guess is that with extensions in the Web Store, all Vivaldi has to sync is the URLs to those extensions, and then the browser can install them by itself. If you install an extension manually from a file, Vivaldi would have to also sync that file to its servers in order to send it out to all your devices, and that can potentially use up a lot of storage space on the sync server (as well as extra bandwidth when syncing).

You can just click the Reset Remote Data button in Sync settings and start syncing your data again (more info here).
To be extra safe from potential data loss, you can make a backup of your user profile folder (check Profile Path on vivaldi://about/).

@mathewjordan If you come back or someone else finds this the 8010 error is a complete red herring it doesn't stop anything. When I tried to replace vivaldi with another browser I got the same issue of it not letting me login and then it struck me, I hadn't been asked to open the gnome keyring. For whatever reason the keyring was broken and deleting it so a new one was made fixed the problem. Now I can sync again. Remember this will remove all the keys in all the rings. If you have other rings then just delete the specific ring file not the folder.

Aha, my first instance of putting my foot in my mouth. I don't actually have any stacks that high. Generally, 2-20 tabs (I will update my original post to reflect this) per stack, ~13 stacks. I just said such a high number because I figured if I said '2 tabs per stack' people would just say, 'copy the links, it is only 2 tabs.'

Although, even with just 20 tabs, it might be nice and help keep things clean. I'll try to look into this. Unless for 2-20 tabs it seems silly to have a separate session?
Also, I suppose this means that an automatic and non-external solution is not an option.

Now that I am digging into sessions a bit deeper, I see that they are a bit different than what I had imagined.
On Chrome, I had multiple users (one per project) but then each user session (not sure if that is the right term) would balloon to a few gigabytes of space just by existing, and with limited drive space that just did not make sense to me. I was fearful the sessions would have the same effect but upon reading your post again, I think that will not happen with Vivaldi sessions. It would just be a few kilobytes of additional data (at least from my initial testing).
I also thought sessions was like 'restore previous session' in Firefox, which would just restore all open windows and tabs previously opened and nowhere near as extensible as Vivaldi's feature, if I understood that correctly.

I'm guessing the location of the files on non-Windows OSes should be in ~/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi and ~/.config/vivaldi.
Are there any issues from sending the sessions between different OSes?

I was just thinking that the process means I would have to do this around twice a day. In the morning to laptop, in the afternoon to desktop, and hopefully not forget!
No intention of using a phone for this but just for brevity's sake, sessions are not possible with phone, right?
