Well now you know you can't trust Yandex

@jadsfy, it is certainly not so simple to find a balance between usefulness and implications. Yandex is certainly by far the best at image searching which I sometimes use to find the provenance of a given image, I use it through an OpenSource extension that uses the Yandex API and others.
To simply search for images on the web, I normally do it with Startpage, which although it uses the Google engine, curiously gives better results than this, or I search on Pixabay or similar CC image pages.
In general, I try to avoid search engines and services that use ads, trackers, logging or other invasive methods as much as possible, preferably OpenSource and/or reliable services. I also have the bad habit of always reading the PP and TOS of a service or app before using it.

I use Yandex, criticize Putin and am not in jail, unlike Assange. Also ask Snowden whose government is scarier.

In Russia, about 400 people are arrested a year for posting on social networks, while in Britain 3,300 are arrested. Which is confirmed by data published in the Times. This is despite the fact that Russia has a population of about 150 million. and Britain's is 67 million. So on a per per capita is even worse for free speech in Britain: the number of arrests for social media posts is almost twenty times higher than in Russia.

@jadsfy If it’s just for image search I have found TinEye the best so far. (https://tineye.com/)

@TheQuantumAlpha said in Well now you know you can't trust Yandex:
I use it sometimes when i want outsiders opinion on searches.
Interesting. Opinion is not relevant to my use of search.

Yandex is a multinational technology company based in Russia. It's often referred to as the "Russian Google" because it offers a wide range of services similar to Google, including:
- Yandex Search: This is the most popular search engine in Russia and one of the largest in the world.
- Yandex Maps: A mapping service with detailed maps of Russia and other countries.
- Yandex.Mail: A free email service.
- Yandex.Taxi: A ride-hailing service (similar to Uber) available in many countries.
- Yandex.Music: A music streaming service.
- Yandex.Translate: A translation service that supports many languages.
- Yandex Browser: A web browser with built-in security features.
- Alice: A virtual assistant similar to Siri or Alexa.
Yandex also has a strong presence in other areas like e-commerce, cloud computing, and self-driving cars.
Here are some key things to know about Yandex: - Focus on Russian language and culture: Yandex's services are designed with a focus on the Russian language and the needs of Russian-speaking users. This makes it a popular choice in Russia and other countries with significant Russian-speaking populations.
- Strong market share in Russia: Yandex dominates the Russian search market, holding a larger share than Google.
- Global reach: While its primary market is Russia, Yandex offers services in many other countries around the world.
- Innovation: Yandex is known for its innovation in areas like search algorithms, artificial intelligence, and autonomous vehicles.
If you're interested in learning more about Yandex, you can visit their website at yandex.com.

If you're going to use the yandex you might as well be using Google lol

As said before, the Yandex reverse image search is by far the best and most complete, but the other products are similar to Google with the same
inexistentprivacy. -
I always trusted yandex for images. However, its a shame an attempt is being made to utilize it with AI and for expanding just in the European community. However, that's just business. Unfortunately, have yet to find another image search engine nearly as good. Do not like or trust Bing or Google, due to a variety of reasons.
As the Internet evolves, it appears to becoming more PTS (Pay To See) or constantly subscribing and/or, registering with sites, paying for site access, or paying for a non-recordable stream with the same tech giants in conjunction with the government controlling the content, tracking what is seen, and by whom.
At this time, a search from various search engines always results with the same images and/or content. A Google Search has become a Global Search with user data obtained and recorded. Everything on the Internet is becoming global to obtain and maintain control and surveillance with freedom on the Internet disappearing at an alarming rate due to greed, power and politics.
One option may be an Intranet service out of reach of high tech and government regulations, which would require a a subscription, and/or coupled with a Internet Service Provider such as StarLink that would have the resources to make such a option work. Unfortunately, as soon as something becomes large, the government wants to intervene, regulate, add costs, and eventually control.
In the meanwhile, my search for an alternate search engine continues. Going off the grid and just using a flip phone on occasion is sounding better all the time. Until then, Vivaldi remains my default browser with Startpage as my search engine.

@Catweazle Cheers for that API: https://github.com/dessant/search-by-image
I also use Yandex's free cloud storage (nothing important/sensitive).

I recommend avoid Yandex at all costs. They had many data leaks - user's personal data and source codes (almost all services). They got one fine for that, 60000₽ ≈ $600.

@mikeyb2001 , I brought some additional information:
Yandex Search: Planform for yandex ads - 60% of website space is advertising. SERP are being goverment-censored
fun fact: now they does't own even your own domain
yandex.ru
(redirect to some Gazprom media site)Yandex Maps: Yet another ads platform, extorting money from business owners for colored pins
Yandex.Mail: A email service and ads platform (lol they use inline base64 images for banners), you must pay subscription for a more acceptable user experience
Yandex.Music: A music streaming service with illegal/pirated music
Yandex Browser: Yet another Google Chrome skin + Yandex Sovetnik acting more aggressively than the Honey extension (all small online store owners hate this) + russian Root CA SSL certificate (in simple terms is MITM-ready) + persistent Yandex telemetry
Alice: A virtual assistant similar to Siri or Alexa. Also this is smartsmart speakers, and dumb yandex develpers doesn't test firmware and make large DDOS and put down almost all russan NTP servers for three weeks
Yandex.Taxi: displaced Uber in a non-competitive way. And also ads platform, ofc
