Arching Floorpians

@npro i'm just centring my chakra atm, inside my glass pyramid, clutching my purple crystals.
oooooh, poiple...
-
@ybjrepnfr oh, bugger it! tis my 23:20 atm. am gonna make myself a cuppa black tea, then update all my
ffn
bookmarks, containers, cookies,uBO
&stylus
AO data, et al, fromfloorp
, then... tomorrow i'm gonna try to use onlyffn
all day, notfloorp
.i created an extra tabs-panel specifically for those sites i use as webpanels in floorp. it's far less useful than an actual dedicated sidebar, but i'll see if i can live with it.
for the tab view splitting, i still have the
Tile Tabs WE
AO installed, which i'll keep using, even though it never works as well withsidebery
as it does withtst
.damnit!
-
@ybjrepnfr hey @npro, would you kindly pls check & tell me if your latest ffn atm is misbehaving wrt scaling sidebery correctly within its panel / sidebar width?
-
@ybjrepnfr ok... for you I'll do it
...
you are right, dragging the side handle doesn't scale anything . (ffn128.0a1/sdb5.2.0)
So... ESR is actually the right choice and yet another reason to stay with Floorp after all (the meditation seemed to have worked... it has led you to that path of... enlightment... "ommm" )
-
@npro ta.
happily, this morn's ffn update fixed the problem;
Version 128.0a1 (2024-05-30) Nightly 128.0a1 (20240530213713) Details Installed on: 31 May 2024 at 11:05:02 Status: The Update was successfully installed
however, i'm losing my mind atm troubleshooting why a site that works fine in floorp is malfunctioning in ffn [before & after the latest updates]. sigh, one step forward, two steps back.
ps: it also fails in ordinary ff. finally i tried it in snappie; hahaha, it fails in an excitingly innovative way i've never seen before. It loads the page, & i briefly see the contents, but less than a second later the page goes black, with only this fun msg:
Application error: a client-side exception has occurred (see the browser console for more information).
hilarious.
-
and the contest of contradictory opinions continues.
Moving away from ESR, which is big, we will get all the speed boost and features from new Firefox.
so i think my best policy atm, rather than trying to discover if i should be happy or sad, is instead just to be utterly confused. now that's something at which i'm especially good!
-
this url https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8646843/jenna-price-is-australia-still-a-racist-country/ & other ones on that domain, opens perfectly in
floorp
, & dodges its paywall entirely, such that i have unfettered access to the content... in floorp. otoh, i simply cannot make it work inff
&ffn
[including a virgin profile for the latter]; the paywall kills it every time. even after several hours of side-by-side comparison of myfloorp
vsffn
settings, uBO filters, &user.js
, i still have no idea whyfloorp
works &ff/ffn
will not.for giggles i also tested it in vivaldi snappie. in my default profile it fails identically to ff & ffn via the paywall, but weirdly if i then activate reader view, i can access the full contents. then i wondered if i could use the same trick in ffn, only to find that r/v is not even offered there for that site, & when i force it via the url prefix
about:reader?url=
, the contents are empty.other than this annoyance, today's experimental use of ffn not floorp was successful, & i was intending to keep going this way over coming days, but... now that i've discovered a site i do use now & then, which is great in floorp but hopeless in ffn, i wonder if i should abandon the experiment, return to floorp, & just suck it up that it's so old [being esr].
why is this browser stuff so frustrating?

confused
They said officially
@ybjrepnfr said in Arching Floorpians:
Floorp is in the process of cleaning up its codebase to move from ESR-based to Rapid Release-based.
"Rapid Release" is a term clearly defined for Firefox so I'd say it's valid. But, given the fact that they are changing their minds every 2 weeks or so, nobody knows if they are going to stick with it
I'd say just wait for mid-July then we should know for sure ; and not read their reddit so much

v. 115?
yes, i have wondered about that. i suppose the question is whether the floorp dev baked-in some special magic settings, or alternatively if even ordinary ff-esr would also work for this domain? if the former, then the answer is simple, i need to stay with floorp & give up thinking about returning to ffn. if the latter, then it's a bit depressing coz it means that once floorp rebases [or even just jumps to the latest esr if not rebasing], this domain will also stop working in floorp. hmmm, do i feel curious enough to try d/l & installing plain ff esr to test?
-

sounds like the next logical step

done, in a vm. result:
- brand new installed
ff-esr 115.11.0esr
also fails to open the article, being also blocked by the paywall.
so, floorp really does seem to have some extra special voodoo magic going on!
- brand new installed
-
@ybjrepnfr wow, really? With all .js stuff etc copied over 1:1?
-
@npro no, i tested an absolutely virgin
esr
in this test. my prior tests offfn
&ff
seem, i believe, to eliminate any cause possible from myuser.js
coz i also tested them both [ffn & ff] with clean profiles [ie, nouser.js
] yet they still failed to open those sites.btw, earlier tests also included virgin floorp profile, to guarantee that in case historically i might have added some of the special floop js in its settings, & later forgotten it, but those tests also resulted in clean floorp still bypassing the paywall.
this really is bugging me though. i intensely dislike not being able to solve this puzzle so far.

A friend has asked me to take a look at Fedora 40 KDE... so I did with distrosea...
W...
T...
H...lol
-
@npro omz, is your friend called linus?
ofc that's dreadful & ridiculous for that catastrophe to be possible, just like in @TbGbe 's pet distro, heehee. that said, i should mention this really does surprise me, coz since prolly a year or more ago i radically changed my opinion of fedora kde [i used to dislike it a lot]. the change came for me when i realised that their kde-sig team seemed to have undergone a philosophical change, after which they began reliably doing plasma, frameworks & gear updates within their 6 month fedora release cycles, rather than keeping the packages stale & making users wait til the next big fedora version change.
in fact i changed my mind so much that whilst archlinux kde remains on my main pc [tower], i actually changed my secondary pc [lappy] to fedora kde... as well as maintaining a fedora kde vm on my tower [which i upgraded to 40 several weeks before the official time, & which upgrade went very well for me].
so, imo if your friend linus, heehee, still is interested, at least based on my last year+ with kfedora here, they should have a pretty nice time... unless that weird
rm
issue bites them [i've not experienced any comparable problem here when i've wished to remove various pkgs occasionally]. -

oh dear me. now the mystery has only deepened.
@ybjrepnfr said in Arching Floorpians:
the question is whether the floorp dev baked-in some special magic settings
atm i am using floorp on my lappy [fedora kde], not my usual tower [archlinux kde]. i have just tested a url on that
canberratimes.com.au
domain, with lappy... & it also fails at the paywall.thus, logically, it is NOT floorp itself per se which magically bypasses paywalls. it is specifically MY floorp, on MY archlinux kde. ipso facto, i now believe the time is right for my next logical action...

I wish he were heh, he must be a millionaire by now...
ofc that's dreadful & ridiculous for that catastrophe to be possible
but that's not it, how can a whole DE be a hard dependency of a... virtual keyboard lol, that's ridiculous.
And... these are exactly the things no one will ever watch in youtube reviews, all of those I watched over the years were superficial crap done by casual Linux hipsters. (or Zoomers?)
their kde-sig team seemed to have undergone a philosophical change
that sounds ok (apart from the weed they are smoking with the virtual keyboard), but their (Fedora's) philosophical (or is it marketing...) stance of going full immutable in the next years will be hard to swallow for me...
Also F uses traditionally a lot of memory compared to other distros (2GB for KDE, that's why I wanted to remove things like the virtual keyboard), while they state 2GB is enough lol. Yeah watch me open a browser lol.

didn't I tell you about Fedora?

well, sod it. i'm now reverting back to
floorp
instead offfn
, in myarchlinux kde
tower. in addition to those damn blocked news domains in nightly, now i find i can't get livestreaming of the australia vs china ladies soccer match starting right now... but it works fine ofc infloorp
. this is crazy!
