[SOLVED] Mail client not syncing with IMAP server properly
-
Same as @Th30philus , I experience the same issue. I'm on the last version of Vivaldi (6.4.3160) and I'm trying to do this with gmx.net 's IMAP. My local client syncs with the server if I read the email elsewhere, but when I read it from Vivaldi locally, the server is not updated. This is a crucial limitation for me that I read email from different computers. Happy to know when there is an update on this bug

Vivaldi 6.4.3160.47 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit)
Mine is hit and miss. I just realized I have over 30 unsent emails. There was one error message that popped up and then went away earlier today. All my accounts - hosted domains and gmail - are all unable to send - can only receive.
-
Corrected - even my vivaldi.net email cant send.

@axelsoto Hopefully the devs will figure this out. Initially, I thought it was the remote server causing this, since the errors I was seeing, implied that it was the remote IMAP server dropping the connection, not Vivaldi Mail.
I have a GMX (.com) account, but have yet to experience the same error occur with them.

I had also some accounts which were not synced properly, but some weeks ago I figured out, that there's a menu entry, which was not activated:
I never haved played around with these settings so eventually all folder were subscribed by default at the beginning because a mailaccount, which I added last, the sent folder was not subscribed and so not synced.
Since I subscribed all sent folders from all accounts, I didn't find the error any further -
@derDay Thanks! This seems to have solved the sync issues for me. It appears that the accounts I was having sync issues with did not have the Inbox subscribed to. After subscribing to them, all seems to work as expected.
I do not recall manually subscribing or unsubscribing to folders in Vivaldi before. On some of my accounts, the Inbox appears to have been automatically subscribed. Others, not so. This may be an inconsistency in how Vivaldi treats new account subscriptions.
Particularly confusing and unintuitive to me was the fact that Vivaldi continued to download and present mail in my Inbox, even though I was apparently not subscribed to that folder. In my opinion, Vivaldi should trigger a warning to the user if the user is manipulating (reading, deleting, etc.) mail in a folder that is presented by Vivaldi, but not subscribed to. Or, perhaps more consistently, Vivaldi should not be presenting or downloading messages in a folder that is not subscribed to.

@Th30philus great to hear that this was sorted out and @derDay thanks for pointing to the solution. This changes the nature of the bug report.

that's exactly what I thought, too. and great to hear that's working for you too!

We have built-in logic for when setting up account connection, to subscribe to three standard folders, Inbox, Sent and Trash. Perhaps that has somehow failed or maybe the Inbox folder got somehow unsubscribed after the account was set up. So there are glitches in that logic and we need to attend to that. Then there is our imap action buffer. It runs on the background in its own time. It will check if a pending imap action, like marking read or deleting, is for a folder that is unsubscribed, and then drop that action. This is probably an overkill. We should not worry about actions that are pending when and if you decide to unsubscribe from a folder. In all normal cases they will have been carried out long before the unsubscribe action is carried out.

It's back! Same behavior as discussed above.
This seems related to either my flaky Comcast connection OR general internet slowdown. Same issues appear when using my TMobile internet connection as when using Comcast.
I filed a second bug report but have had no response as yet.
I have a copy of the server log showing that some connects work, the next attempt fails.
Reluctant to share the log openly, have shared in the bug report.
The hosting service is concerned about security on a shared server. And they said:
"At some point, we won't be able to keep whitelisting your IP each time Vivaldi does it's thing. It might be years or maybe never depending on how the developers of Vivaldi decide to fix it, if they are even capable of doing so. As you can imagine, since we have no control over them fixing the bug, there would be a limit to how much support we can offer for that program."
Looks like I have to switch back to Thunderbird despite my preference for Vivalid email.
Any ideas how to proceed?

@halberstadt
While this may be the same apparent behavior on the user end, this does not appear to be the same problem. I am the original poster of this thread. For me the issue was fixed merely by manually subscribing to the inbox folder on my IMAP account within Vivaldi. For me the issue was that Vivaldi had not automatically done so when I added the account to Vivaldi. After subscribing to the inbox folder, I've had no issues with syncing. You may want to consider opening another thread with your problem if it is not resolved by subscribing to your IMAP inbox folder, because in that event, it is not the same issue. -
@Th30philus Thanks for this clarification. My issue is not the same, because I am using the IMAP folder with Vivaldi mail.
What is similar is the failure of the back and forth talk between server and client. The server cuts the connection when the client doesn't talk for a while. And the client then tries to talk but doesn't recognize the new state and fails.
I'm sure the problem is deep in the weeds of the implementation of the protocol for client-server talk.
Anyhow, I'm switching back to Thunderbird. At least until I hear from Vivaldi.
