Vivaldi GX Revisited (Updated Opera GX Mod)
-
Alas, finally! I've been using the original Vivaldi GX mod by gabevilela since 2021 and witnessed it get more broken throughout Vivaldi updates. As I have no CSS experience myself, I never bothered to care about it and simply dealt with it up until now. The mod works perfectly, and I've been able to migrate most, if not all of my css mods over to this one. I'd also like to give my props for the overrides.css idea to group all css mods into one so it won't be a hassle when updating. I I didn't have to do much in the original VGX as it received no updates anymore since 1.6.3 but I imagine this will be maintained/updated for the time being and hopefully throughout. Your work is greatly appreciated, my friends!

@beyxnd said in Vivaldi GX Revisited (Updated Opera GX Mod):
Regardless of that, Chinese companies having access to browsing activity is not good.
How do you think about Google/Apple/X(Twitter)/Meta(Facebook)?
-
@Aaron Similarly to how I feel about Chinese companies; I'm really not a fan of how much data they collect and sell. I try to avoid using their services/products when it's convenient to do so, but there's not much we can do about it since their services make up the majority of the Internet.

If anyone is here due to Vivaldi's 6.2 update breaking certain UI elements in Vivaldi GX, I have written some fixes that address most of the issues. It seems @nomadic has been away from his PC for a couple weeks, so I thought I'd post this in the meantime while we await his return.
Simply download the three .css files and replace the existing ones in your designated Vivaldi UI directory.

Thank you guys so much for your work on this. I always loved this design, and I'm really glad someone brought it back for us.

this is straight up amazing! do you think a Vivaldi One (based on opera one) would be doable? after all it's basically a more rounded and less neon version of the gx one, maybe i could try messing a bit with the css if i have some free time
-
@giaaaacomo Yes, it should be possible, but you will probably have to go about it yourself. This is enough of a challenge for me to maintain going forward.
Opera One looks fairly different from GX from what I can see, but you can probably adapt some of this mod's CSS to make it work (stuff like the full height panel toolbar). The CSS is mostly commented with brief explanations of what everything does, but feel free to ask me any questions. There were some strange things that needed to be done to get the mod working

I was using my own theme based on Firefox, but was getting tired of it. I almost switched to Opera GX. Instead, I guess I'll just use this theme. It might need at least a fix or two, so maybe I will send you merge requests if I choose to keep using it. I use the bookmark bar and right now it looks weird with the black border on top. An update this summer changed the selector for it. The Vivaldi icon on the top left is also a bit too much to the left because of the down arrow, so I guess it needs to be hidden.
I also noticed that the "unread tab" icon only shows on hover, so is that intentionnal?
Either way, thanks for your awesome work. I know how much of a pain it can get to modify a browser's ui. I used to do the same for Firefox and it was way worse than Vivaldi. The only aspect that's more complicated is the customizability, but that's usually a good sign.

@nomadic thanks for now! i have a reaaaally small amount of free time as of now, so we'll see i guess!

Nice post!!!!

@nomadic I just sent my pull request through Github. I also incorporated the few fixes made by @beyxnd.
For everyone else, you can get an up-to-date version of the mod (as of 6.2.3105.58) here: https://github.com/mechagomizilla/Vivaldi-GX/releases/tag/2.1-beta.1
If you find more bugs, please send them my way for now.
-
@Gomizilla what kind of divergences do you have in mind? i refer to your readme
-
@giaaaacomo I only updated 2 or 3 lines from the readme. It's nomadic who wrote that line, probably. However, I do plan to make my fork deviate at some point. There are a few little details that I want to have the freedom to tweak at my own leisure. For instance, in this mod, the UI is a bit more compact vertically than Opera GX. I prefer to have more breathing room, so I will match it more closely. There are also a few other details, but this should be the most obvious one.
Anyway, I'm sure there are still 1 or 2 more bugs to iron out first and I want to match nomadic's version more closely while I take care of them. That way, everyone wins. I also want to add a transition effect for the highlight of UI element and maybe he'll want to use that.
I don't plan on making an Opera One mod for now though, but if I did, it's basically a mix of this mod and my previous Firefox Photon mod, so I wouldn't have to much trouble. I can only maintain one mod at a time, though, and that's the one that I personally use. However, I can share my Firefox mod if someone wants to try to use parts of it like the floating tabs.

@TheBlueSheep
Hi,
You could try FiddlerCap and see whether is anything suspicious in a Clean Profile.

@Ayespy Vivaldi offers it by default it's tab hibernation

Hey there, nomadic, many thanks for remaking this theme! I recently switched from Opera GX to Vivaldi, and having it be able to look like Opera GX was one of my 3 required features for me to switch over. Needless to say, you were instrumental to me switching
(I have no idea how to prevent this from being an emoji)
I am unsure if this has been mentioned in the thread before, but based on it still being there, I assume not. I found a small but unfortunately very noticeable issue with the mod, and it's not an issue with the theme, it appears regardless of whether you use the companion themes or not: When searching in the address bar the icon of displayed websites from your history will be displayed right next to the title, with no space between them.
Thanks in advance! -
@Mystereo Sorry for the delay in response, was on vacation.
Think the small change I just pushed should fix it. There have been several fixes since the initial release, so it seemed like the right time to make a new one.
https://github.com/ortiza5/Vivaldi-GX/releases/tag/v2.1
The companion theme icon set is currently somewhat broken because of new CSS variables, but I will push a new version to the theme soon with the fixes.
-
@nomadic I have not noticed anything wrong with the theme (yet), but the modification now works correctly! Thank you for your work. Also no worries about the response time, I forgot that I made this request until now hehe
Cheers!
