Workspaces | Benefits?

@DoctorG I already linked to it above.

@xanathon OK. Ruarí, QA team member, said that this issue will be investigated, and i remember that i told many users since invention of Workspaces that loss of tabs or tab mess is a known issue and devs were investigating.
I have no information why a fix from 6.1 Snapshot could not be backported to Stable. And related to a NDA i am not allowed to talk about all.
I hope your disappointed mood can be calmed.
We have all our pet bugs, some are sort of ugly cockroaches. -
@DoctorG perhaps:
- [Workspaces] Can become empty (VB-96594) from 3001.3 (never had issues since then, so I kept this build)
- [Workspaces] Deleting a workspace creates an empty restored workspace (VB-97833) from 3035.12
Latest snap has other workspaces fixes, but the more stable snapshot is still 3001 imho; also no issues with extensions

@Hadden89 Thanks, i checked this now; the related Master bug was VB-96594 from April 2023 with 6.0 Stable.

@xanathon
Hi, can you check if you have running background apps enabled?
open chrome://settings/system
I have this setting always disabled but somehow it was enabled and I get a different workspace bug (already reported).
I now remember one user report the same for the bug you and others reported, all tabs are moved to the default window after Vivaldi restart.Cheers, mib

Hi, the problem of this issue is nobody from the tester and developer team can reproduce this in a clean profile.
I see for years recommendations here in forum, that create new clean profile and it will fix bugs, or not reproducible in clean profile as you mentioned. And that's the problem.
- Testing on always clean profile is not good.
- Profile and configuration system should be written, that it won't corrupt in regular way (unless disk failure or similar HW failure). Randomly. Yes, yes, there is no bugfree software (I was hobby C# "dev"), but some parts of software must 'just work'.
Here we see almost daily, "your profile is corrupted you have to create new profile" or, "test it with new profile". Sorry, but this is bad. User doesn't mess with those files, only browser access them. I don't have time, nor I don't want to create new profile to "fix" the bug.
Fortunately I don't need those for me useless features, and I'm disabling them right away.

Well, users will not give us their used profiles to test the issue.

I agree.
Chromium is spreading too much settings and data into man files and databases. But the time of editable config files as in Opera 12 or other older programs is gone.I hate broken profile data as such disaster cause much work to investigate whats wrong and which files have to be restored.

Hello. I came looking for answers and yeah, I have the exact same bug. I have a lot of tabs, some for reading later, others for investigations and so. I created 5 workspaces to keep everything organized and keep my mind centered on one thing. As I close the Vivaldi window, and re-open it, i get some of the tabs back on the main workspace, which i would hope could be eliminated, but it's stuck with 1 new tab all the time.
I got a way around it. When I close my window, I go to the tab bar and exit Vivaldi, when I open it again, it's all as i left it. But today i closed normally, and opened, some were back on the main workspace, it's never all of them in my case, and i closed it again and opened and i had almost all the tabs in the main workspace. I was looking and it's just random tabs, i don't see a pattern anywhere.
I hope this information helps anyone. It clearly sounds like a bug, and I know Vivaldi will solve it. Have a great day, reader, and thanks for reading until here. Blessings
Hi,
At least for me I find it so nice to see a user like myself use the word "Blessings", some people don't seem to realize just how blessed they really are.

I just installed 6.0.2979.25 (Stable channel) (32-Bit) and now it's even worse. On a computer where workspaces worked bug-free until the update they are now also broken. After restart some tabs stayed in the workspace and others moved to the standard workspace. Since this happened I rule out that it has anything to do with profiles or addons, since those were not changed, and as I said in the past: two Vivaldis with the same version and addons (on two different computers): on one workspaces work as expected and on the other they are bugged. After the last update they are bugged on both, so whatever was done has made it worse instead of better!
This "workspaces" feature is seriously flawed and an extreme annoyance after advertised aggressively as a great new feature.
What was the version before 6.0.2979.25 (Stable channel) (32-Bit) and how do I roll back to that?
-
@xanathon
Hi, this was only a security update, nothing else was changed in the code.
How can this change workspace issues, no idea.
Downgrade is not recommended, this can cause such issues, but in this case it should not harm your profile.
By the way why do you use the 32 Bit version, this limit Vivaldi to use only 3.2 GB Ram maximal. -
That's the version the updater and the official download link offer me.
If nothing was changed with workspaces that improves my opinion that workspaces are seriously flawed and not production ready and should not have been rolled out in this state.
-
Update: I tried to install 64bit Vivaldi. After starting the browser I only got an empty window that blinked from black to sometime white and nothing else happened. Completely unusable. So I installed 6.0.2979.25 (Stable channel) (32-Bit) again and now all tabs and tabgroups go to the standard workspace.
What a mess! I should never have started to rely on workspaces. This is extremely frustrating.

@Davy49 hello, thank you for your reply! yes i use it a lot, actually haha it's just as you say it, they just don't know how blessed they are! just the fact of breathing another day is a mere blessing. it's all a matter of perspective, and we all should focus it on being thankful about the things we have. hope you're having a nice day or night, and i hope you do good on whatever responsabilities you have. stay safe, blessings
-
@mariolfh, Hello I just wanted to say thank you for your kind words, it's so nice to read something positive in these troubled times that our current world is going through.
-
@Davy49 Yes, indeed. Blessed are the Cheesemakers.

For this reason (ie. WorkSpaces has ''0 tabs'') I'm choosing the 'Standalone' version:
When every file &setting sits inside one it enables a very straight forward way to make backups every night or after hours of setting my WS: [https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/723952](Use this simple "Vivaldi-Standalone.BAT")
