A nice benefit of the workspaces is that they are shared among windows. Each workspace can only be open in one window, but the list of workspaces is there. Thus you can build a lot of virtual windows and accidentally closing a window will not loose the tabs open in its workspace. It is another way to organize your work. Personally I like the combination of stacks and workspaces.
I had seen the experimental version of workspace mentioned before but now I've actually tried it I see that it can help me organise my wife's clutter... she has the habit of opening mutiple tabs with TV shows she wants to watch some time, and will sometimes open a new window which she again fills up with multiple tabs of stuff. It often happened that I came along and closed what I thought was "the open Vivaldi" expecting her tabs to be saved for next time, then found out I had only closed one set of tabs while there was another one hiding in the background! That meant I had to restore all the closed tabs before closing Vivaldi so she would have everything next time she opened it.
I tried rationalising her tabs to stop this happening - by adding all the never-watched tabs to the reading list then closing them - but she never took to this and started tab-hoarding again. Hopefully, I can now persuade her to start using workspaces instead of multiple windows... then I won't have a headache when I need to close Vivaldi on her desktop.

since last or previous snapshot i can no longer right click tab to move it to a window of another profile. I tried drag and dropping tabs, but that doesn't work as well - it shows me the hint to drop a tab, but dropping does nothing
is this broken?
or my mind plays tricks and this was never a feature?
-
hm, closing a window with workspace selected crashes vivaldi for me. each time. i just created myself 5 workspaces on my main profile (i have two windows open right now) and i have 2nd profile open too (2 windows, no workspaces here)

@ruarí: Developers, now you just need to do something very interesting, put sound effects in Vivaldi like OPERA GX has in your browser, they are very good sounds and pleasant to listen to, very smooth, if possible put them in, Vivaldi will be very good. install OPERA GX to see what I'm talking about.
Thanks. -
@carlinhosnewstyle That must be the 6th time you have written that post verbatim
-
@Ruarí I think it's the 4th time, I think nobody cares about what I've been talking about for over 2 years, look, there are comments here on the forum talking about it in December 2020, so far, nothing has been done. Several users commenting on this.
-
@carlinhosnewstyle You request has been noted. No plans at the moment but I am not saying never.
My point here is that you have two previous identical just from the last 3 days alone. We are all for feature requests but please don't just copy and paste the exact same request for every snapshot

great to see that I can also switch workspaces.
Is there a way to move the workspace button to the right of the tab bar or any other toolbar for that matter? I don't like it on the left, I'd rather have it with the sync and trashcan icon, I feel that would be a little less clutter.
-
@WildEnte Right click on the button and untick, show in the tab bar
Then open the toolbar editor for the navigation toolbar and locate the "Workspaces" button (highlighted blue in my image below) and drag it to some other location.
EDIT: Ok I read that again. You cannot move it on the tab bar, which is what it seems you want to do but you can place it in the adress bar, status bar or on the panel in any location you like.
-
@Ruarí Thank you for clarifying, I am reassured that you have plans for the future. I'll be waiting for apologies for anything, it's just that I was under the impression that the Vivaldi team wasn't seeing the comments about suggestions that people had already made more than 3 years ago. on the forum and until now it has never been done.
Anyway, I'm grateful for your attention. -

I didn't actually say that, I said
No plans at the moment but I am not saying never.
We try to do many requests but not all. Its true that it has been requested for a while but not many have mention it since then (4 people total?). The total number of requests is certainly not the only criteria for why we might do something but it is one of them.

Sure would be nice if the tab bar were also a full fledged toolbar

The note with a URL to edit my signature lost its URL again on upgrading. This has happened a few times before.

[Settings] Enable ‘Hide Title Bar when Tabs Are Not on Top’ by Default (VB-96133)
As one who loves a minimal browser UI I absolutely love this new feature, and once working properly will save me a whole bunch of custom CSS.
However, not sure if this is intentional or not, but the title bar still shows in a maximised window, if the tabs are on top/bottom AND the tab bar is then hidden in settings. This is inconsistent with how a regular/restored window shows; without a title bar.
Looks like it's this selector in custom.css that's causing it to show:
#browser.tabs-at-edge #header { min-height: calc(30px / var(--uiZoomLevel)); }
I guess I'll have to make a bug report unless this is already worked on?
-
@Pathduck There are some serious usability issues with the no title bar:
- No Trash Can
- Unable to drag window to another monitor
If those issues can be fixed, having no title bar in a restored window would be fine.
-
@Pesala Yes, there are some issues - as well as the Sync cloud icon will be missing. The trash bin and and cloud icons have always been out of place IMO, and have not been possible to move, so I suspect at some point they will be made into separate regular buttons to be placed where the user chooses.
They would both fit nicely on the status bar I think. The Sync functionality could be integrated into the existing Sync status button. There's no need for two cloud icons.
No Trash Can
Yes, but the keyboard hotkey still works, which is what I'd use anyway
Unable to drag window to another monitor
Yes, they'll need to figure out some elegant solution to this. I'm guessing the centered url bar would help, as there's a lot more free space to drag on the sides now (even though I absolutely hate a centered bar...)
Personally, I always use the browser maximised, so I don't care - and I know about Alt+Space already so I can use that if needed. Besides, Win+Shift+Left/Right does the job much faster

No Trash Can
? Must be a Windows bug because I can see the Trash Can when I place the tab bar to either side, with native window or without. It's always at the bottom, next to the cloud icon.
Unable to drag window to another monitor
Again, that may be true for Windows, because on Linux with KDE (I assume with the other Desktop Environments as well) you can hold a key and grab a window from anywhere (even inside the webpage) and move it around.

My mistake. The trash can is down at the bottom of the vertical tab bar, which is a long way down on my 1200x1600 portrait monitor.
Alt+Space works well enough. I guess anyone using vertical tabs in a restored window would be accustomed to it.

Yep, which is the reason I don't use it and have added an extra menu entry inside the tab bar and webpage (page) menu. Always at my disposal.
