I currently use Windown Live Mail on Windows 7. I know it is obsolete. My internet service provider says it will soon be incompatible.

Does Vivaldi mail provide a way to import from WLM? I intend to keep my email on my computer, not on a server's website. I'm pretty sure WLM stores each email message in a file of type ".eml" Is there a way to have Vivaldi mail recognize those files?

Hi, not I am aware of but maybe a different mail client like Thunderbird can import them.
Vivaldi can import from Thunderbird, is perhaps a little cumbersome but I see no direct way.

        Cheers, mib

Can you say more about importing from Thunderbird? What I've seen of Vivaldi instructions describe only importing to web based mail.

There is also a second part to my question: How does Vivaldi store email files on a local computer?

@bellist said in Importing from Windows Live Mail:

              importing from Thunderbird?

File / "Import from Applications or Files..."
then select Thunderbird from the drop-down list.

It stores mails also as .eml files but managed by a database, therefor you cant simple copy them over.
But you never know so I copied 2 mails from one Vivaldi install to another and this work, kind of, only one appears. 😕
This is on Linux, path is different on Windows, right is the source directory, left is the target.

This is an experiment and I leave my mails on the mail servers, if I break something they never gets lost.

Do you have add your WLM account to Vivaldi already?

                Cheers, mib

I'm not sure what an "WLM account" is.

I haven't done anything with Vivaldi Mail and hadn't planned to until I know that I have a possible way forward.

I meant the account you use in Windows Live Mail but already answered.
I read you can export mails from WLM, what export options do you have there?
If WLM can export to Thunderbird or Opera Mail you can try this.

                    Cheers, mib

Looks like WLM exports to Microsoft Exchange (don't know what that is) or to a different account within WLM.

I search a bit, Thunderbird can import .eml files but I cant test this. Then it should be possible to import these mails in Vivaldi.
I guess nobody ever tries this.

I test this but cant find a import function to import folders with .ilm files. I not familiar with Thunderbird, maybe another user can help here.

                        Cheers, mib

Does Vivaldi work with a development community? I"m a retired programmer and theoretically could write a program to copy .eml files to the right place and to update the database.
