Buggy adblocker
-
I have found this issue or maybe it is just a bug. So no matter what filters you use, there are certain websites where you can see ads.
And if you see ads there is a probability that is quite high that you can be tracked by said websites.
I have encountered this on Reddit whereby despite setting the blocker to max, I still see promote ads.
I did post previously here about {REDACTED} website and I was told that if content was illegal then the blocker wont work.
But I do not believe that Reddit, Bing and Amazon are illegal.
Furthermore, if I disable 'allow ads from partners' in setting, the partnered search engine will STILL display said ads.
The main point of having a built-in adblocker and claiming that there is no need to download an extension should TELL YOU that what you are given is competent.
Apparently it is not! A shield is supposed to protect you at any given time. It should not decide when it must protect you.
The same problem obviously happens in the android version.

@AryanDevasagayaum
Vivaldi simply use blocker lists, you can add anything you need to these lists, there is no bug.
There is also no reason to shout in a forum, don´t use caps lock.
Here are some:

@AryanDevasagayaum No lists-based blocking will ever be perfect. Vivaldi uses publicly maintained blocklists, and these are updated continuously as web sites change their ads. The web is not static, and lists need to adapt to new tactics by sites.
Have you tried restarting the browser to trigger a blocklist update, or updating them manually?
I did post previously here about {REDACTED} website and I was told that if content was illegal then the blocker wont work.
What I said was that we don't want direct links to such sites here, and that such illegal sites often use lots of tricks to work around adblocker lists. If you need to post such urls, format as code so they won't be linked:
www.example.com
.Furthermore, if I disable 'allow ads from partners' in setting, the partnered search engine will STILL display said ads.
What search engine? Maybe none of the lists have rules for this specific search engine's ads.
As for Reddit - if I go to this page with adblocker disabled:
https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/10jnnjr/til_the_game_oregon_trail_was_developed_by_3/I get this promotion:
Turning on the adblocker, no such promotion is shown. This is with all the default lists. I also add the English (Peter Lowe's) as well as both the Remove Cookie Warnings lists.
-
@mib2berlin Wasn't shouting. Not my intention. Just pointing out some negatives that can be corrected
-
@Pathduck I have added some filters. But there are moments in reddit that do show the promotion contents.
Mostly using fanboy's, ubo and adguard filters.
Maybe its because of my region that they still show?
For search engine I use ecosia and bing. They still display ads, trying bing search 'Browser'. Found ads for opera in there. (Might depend on what we search for as well)
concerning illegal sites, a bit odd that UBO, Adblock plus and adguard manage to block stuff over there. Just saying.

Hi,
"More" sources
At least easier to pickhttps://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/45703/share-blocking-sources

@AryanDevasagayaum You simply cannot expect lists-based blockers to catch everything.
Vivaldi's blocker is somewhat limited, especially compared to uBlock, and is intended for casual users to handle most of the ads out there. It is not intended for super-users who want more control.
If you want complete control, use uBlock. I use it myself because it offers options like a logger and easier adding of personal rules.
Other than that, I suggest you investigate these ads you see, and make issues on the relevant blocklist Github pages. The rules of the lists is not controlled by Vivaldi at all.
-
@AryanDevasagayaum had the same problem with reddit promoted content. In my case I found that some lists were making that reddit promoted content show. If I remember correctly they were ublock lists and after I removed them the content stoped showing.
I think ublock lists like https://raw.githubusercontent.com/uBlockOrigin/uAssets/master/filters/filters.txt
are buggy with vivaldi adblocker. -
@Pathduck Ok that will do. But it would be great if the dev team could buff up their blocker a bit with MV3 slowly coming up.
-
@Zalex108 Thanks but I already got these up.
-
For me the adblocker works reasonably well, what doesn't work for me at all, neither with the filters in Vivaldi nor using extensions, is to suppress these damn "We use cookies" pop-ups, which appear on practically all pages.
-
The Cookies lists works mostly here on Mobile.
Some sites are still broken till, Disable, Choose, Enable but usually, few og them.

I'm now trying this one as last intent.
On Desktop I don't see them since using uBlock, on Mobile is where sometimes happens.

As I say, sick minds

This is what I meant too. With Ublock Origin and any other adblocker you have those.
But with the vivaldi adblocker even with additional filters we have... that
