Vivaldi Translate is pretty much Worthless
-
I followed a link to a Portuguese language Wikipedia page a bit ago. I do not speak Portuguese but I can suss out a few words and can certainly tell when a translation is garbage.
The untranslated first sentence is: "Ilze Lia Scamparini (Araras, 26 de dezembro de 1958) é uma jornalista brasileira.[2] É atualmente a correspondente da Rede Globo na Itália, Vaticano e região, tendo como base a capital Roma."
Here is what Vivaldi Translate returned for English: "Ilze Lia Scamparini (Macaws, December 26th in 1958) is one journalist Brazilian.[2] She is currently the corresponding for Globo Network at Italy, Vatican and region, based on the capital Pomegranate."I have no doubt His Holiness is unaware the Vatican is located ON a fruit.
Instead of Vivaldi Translate, I will unhappily continue to use Brand G which returned: "Ilze Lia Scamparini (Araras, December 26, 1958) is a Brazilian journalist.[2] She is currently Rede Globo's correspondent in Italy, the Vatican and the region, based in the capital Rome." This Google translation is less humorous but certainly more accurate.

@slartyblartfast
Hi, then you use a different Vivaldi translator, my translate to:Which Vivaldi version do you use?
Cheers, mib
-
I am running Vivaldi 5.6.2867.58 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) . OS is Linux Mint 20.3
I apologize for not including that info earlier.

@mib2berlin Translate is not something I've used in Vivaldi, until just now.
Using the latest Vivaldi Snapshot, but using the text from [2], the result was the same as yours.
The bottom of the Web Panel is displaying "Powered by Lingvanex, hosted by Vivaldi."

@edwardp
Thanks
@slartyblartfast
I use the 5.7 snapshot first but checking in 5.6 stable gives the same result, really strange.Cheers, mib

Hi,
There are some complains about the Translator.It fails often on my side too, either mobile or Desktop.
What I've not read is about the Maintenance, despite the Engine's location.
Even, there are no usual Lang' on top to choose between them, that option is on the Mobile App.
So,
Not sure where to address the complains to be heared. -
Thank you for that information.
Since my original post, I got out my old Win7 laptop which has current Vivaldi installed and tried the same web page again. I got exactly the same result as I first reported.
I will now take this to Lingvanex and ask them to investigate.
Best regards -
@slartyblartfast That’s the only thing you can do. Vivaldi is not responsible for quality of translations, they provide the service as is and host it on their servers. That’s the benefit for us users. Lingvanex is not a good translator, but it the likes of DeepL aren’t going to provide their code for free for Vivaldi.
The point is, if you need a general idea of what a text passage is trying to bring across, Lingvanex is good enough and has the advantage of being built right in and being private. For anything else use another translation service in return for your data.

Hi,
Would you share the URL?Some sites worked on the tests i did and being asked from LingvaNext to share screenshot or video have to find some more.
For the moment it happens on VForum lang specific but would be related to the declared site lang (which not checked yet, but would be the reason).
Thx

-
Yes, I reported this to Lingvanex on the same day I raised the topic here and received a reply that they are investigating.
