Vivaldi teams up with You.com for privacy-focused, personalized search

This is really an asset for Vivaldi, Vivaldi always inspires with great news. By the way: You.com search is also in my search engine collection:https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/46609/guide-vivaldi-search-engines-collection
-
Out of sheer curiosity, I set the You search engine as my default search engine.
-
Is there a search suggestion URL for this search engine?
-
The search engine was not added to my Stable installation on upgrading.

Looks like they "support" OpenSearch:
https://you.com/opensearch.xmlHowever, when actually trying the suggestions URL:
$ curl -I "https://you.com/api/ac?q=test" HTTP/2 403
Let's hope that since they and Vivaldi now are "teamed up" they can fix this. They can't do access control on OpenSearch URLs.
-
Because of this I've been trying You.com out and so far have been pleasantly surprised!
-
Seems nice but I can't find anything about the engine. How does it get its results. What business model do they have or how do they make a profit without user data?
A startup can do lots of stuff for free but eventually they have to start earning money. Right now it just looks to good to be true imo. Nice to see Vivaldi expanding its providers but I think we need more details on this engine before the majority should use it.And what also bugs me is that its English-only so far.
-
Is You.com simply a front end to the google's search engine or do you have your own infrastructure and crawlers to index the web?
-
@pathduck: Huh, that's weird. I've been using You.com for a year now, and never once has the suggestions URL given me trouble after setting it in Vivaldi.

As you can see here, it works well in Vivaldi. I don't know why it doesn't in curl. Cloudflare, perhaps, looking at the headers? -
@SubhoBoy Oh yeah, good point
I guess I always jump to curl instead of testing directly in the browser
I guess they do some UA/client checking of requests.
So that's what you use as Suggestions URL as well?
-
@pathduck: Yeah, though I didn't know what OpenSearch was until today, and learned of the URL from the devs on reddit
On a tangent, how do I get notified for these replies? I'm afraid I always take an hour to remember to open the blog post again and check -
@SubhoBoy Notifications settings are in your forum settings. Click profile picture.
Then you get:
And also email if you need.

They also have a subscription model for their hosted GPT-3 based content creating tool, YouWrite.
AFAIK, their apps use the service's API, but general web results are received from other search engines' crawlers (idk which though) -
This is awesome. You.com is an amazing search engine. A bit different than many others and just cool. Awesome to see Vivaldi working with new innovators!
-
you.com is not available as a search engine option when i go to my search settings. i've restarted my browser, its still not there.

@circuitsystem
Hi, some user report this, open settings search and reset the search engines. There is a checkbox to keep your customized search engines, be careful.Cheers, mib
