New URLs take 10 seconds to load
-
Hi! I like using Vivaldi a lot! But since a few weeks I got a big problem:
When I try to visit a new URL (direct or search result), it takes more than 10 seconds to load. Sometimes I even get a “ERR_TIMED_OUT” error, before the page loads.
When I visit a page, that I visited before, it loads fast (less than 2 sec).
I already tried:
- Changing my DNS server to 1.1.1.1
- deactivating all my extensions
But nothing helped. I hope you guys can help me.

@simon1907 Do you use Secure DNS in Vivaldi?
See chrome://settings/security -
@DoctorG Yes, it was activated. Is this the problem?
-
@simon1907 Yes, can be, sometimes Secure DNS by provider is slow.
-
@DoctorG OK, I will deactivate it and test. What provider are they using for Secure DNS?

@simon1907
Hi, a user report exactly the opposite but maybe for the same reason.https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/77750/slow-response-to-ctrl-w-or-clicking-close-tab
May you can check with a guest profile, it exclude all settings and extensions. Extensions can influence Vivaldi even disabled.

@DoctorG said in New URLs take 10 seconds to load:
chrome://settings/security
The "Use secure DNS" section says:
With your current service provider Secure DNS may not be available all the time
Does "all the time" really refer to time of day, or maybe random glitches or odd server URLs? Or to other Wi-Fi configurations you might happen to connect with?
All my devices point to my router, which uses OpenDNS. I presume Vivaldi inherits that destination?
Does anything different happen if I choose OpenDNS on that settings page? Maybe Vivaldi asks 208.67.222.222 directly instead of asking 10.1.1.1 and waiting for the router to forward the request?
Most new sites open quickly here, but I have noticed a few random search results time out...

@mib2berlin Yeah, with the guest profile they load really fast. Do I need to delete every single extension and check now?
-
@simon1907
Yes, use an old rule to remove 50% of the extensions first, try if it work > if not > next 50% of the extensions, and so forth.
If you use sync it is maybe better to create a new profile with renaming the old one. Vivaldi create a new one at start, then sync without extensions.
It depends on how many extensions you use.
It is also possible your profile is broken, than extensions does not matter at all.
More information about reset/move profiles:Cheers, mib

@simon1907 Just disable all extensions (no need to remove), restart browser and test again. Then enable one by one, restart each time, and test until problem comes back. Then you have found the cause
I believe there is no need to actually delete the extensions, a disabled extension will not be loaded on startup. But restart of browser is important, and closing all tabs (since extension code is often loaded into tabs).

I believe this would refer to changing networks, when "roaming" with a laptop. It should fall back to using regular DNS lookups if it can't find a supported provider.
How I think it works is this:
- On startup, the browser will check the local DNS setup (primary/secondary DNS/resolv.conf etc).
- If it finds one of the supported providers (i.e. 1.1.1.1) it will change to use that.
- Possibly other "guesswork" based on checking local setup?
- Unless explicitly set, then it will use what you choose, but should be able to fall back to regular DNS if needed.
I guess that's why there's a "warning" that you don't have a guarantee DoH will be enabled unless explicitly set.
All my devices point to my router, which uses OpenDNS. I presume Vivaldi inherits that destination?
If there is no reference to OpenDNS in the local machine DNS setup I think there's no way to guess you want to use OpenDNS for DoH. But you'll have to test I guess.
Just do a
tcpdump
and look for traffic to OpenDNS IPs on port 443. Or use Wireshark - you can set Vivaldi to write TLS session keys to a file, and Wireshark can read this file and decrypt TLS traffic so you can examine DoH traffic -
I just deleted all the extensions and the problem is still there
I created a new profile, it worked. Then I installed my extensions again and it stopped working.
I will install all my extensions on Chrome now and then see if Vicaldi is the cause or the extensions.
-
@simon1907 Just to be clear - it is impossible to diagnose Vivaldi by running extensions in Chrome. They are not comparable browsers.
-
@simon1907 Did you install them all at once or one at a time checking performance as you readded them?
-
@MidnightRaccoon I deleted all of them and the issues is still there.

I don't know what's happening. Now it even doesn't work on brand new profiles and on guest profiles. In Chrome it all loads superfast.
