Solved Issues with changing the default search engine after update
-
What the post that does nothing to help me and only shows that vivaldi is going the way of firefox and forcing users to have useless, unnecessary, and unwanted features that can not be turned off even though this was a major reason a lot of users left firefox for vivaldi? Is this a official statement from Vivaldi with you being their representative?

@Quazy1328
OK, I give up.Cheers, mib

So is there anyone who is actually from Vivaldi that can help?

I found a Fix. A permanent one too. The Moderator even says that the inability to delete of the image search is a over site.

Hello all,
i can't change default search engine. It defaults to Yahoo for me and no matter how i try to change it (drop down menu or the checkbox after selecting the engine) it always gets back to yahoo. Are there any workarounds for this (like editing config file directly)? -
Please do a search, this topic is all over the forum right now.

Known issue
If you have recently upgraded to 5.3 and have a problem where you cannot change search engines (VB-89670), we are still planning a fix for this in a future update. To work around it in the mean time, just disable and immediately re-enable any extensions you have installed that can configure/setup search (.e.g. “DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials”, “Startpage — Private Search Engine”, “Kagi Search”, etc.). Now restart the browser. You should then be able to control the default search engine again in Settings. -
I did search but all recent links pointed to deleted topics.
Thanks for the link. -
Sadly, this does not resolve the issue with Ghostery Glow for Chrome extension I noted above. Grateful for further advice on that. Thanks.

Just updated to latest version (v5.3.2679) and now my search defaults to Bing.
This is infuriating. I can change my default image and private search engines but cannot change my default from Bing. You cannot select anything from the dropdown. It just sticks to Bing.
Any ideas?
-
@Tavish Try and set the default search directly in the search engine settings of your preferred engine, without using the dropdown at top.
-
@luetage I have tried every method I can think of to set DDG as my default search engine, including selecting DDG from the engine list and setting as default. It does nothing. If i navigate to away and then return to the search settings page, Bing is still the default search engine.
-
@Tavish Do you have an extension controlling the search engine? If you'd read the start of this topic you'd understand most users who are encountering this issue had such an extension, DDG or others who override the default search engine.
Disable all your extensions, set search engine. After that you can enable extensions again.

Hello All,
Seems that Vivaldi insists on using Bing as the default search engine and will not allow it to be removed. I want to use DuckDuckGo as my default but it will not allow that and reverts to Bing. Using Vivaldi version 5.3.2679.38
How can I:
-
Make DDG my default search engine; and
-
Remove Bing from the list
Thanks

I'm using 5.3.2679.38 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Win 10 Pro. Until the latest update, I was using DuckDuckGo (DDG) as my default search engine, private search engine and images engine.
It has defaulted to Bing for default, and I cannot change this. I don't want BING or any MS engine. The full engine list is offered, but clicking, right-clicking, anything, cannot replace Bing.
The Private Windows offer me the full list, and I can select any of them and it appears to change.
The Images search offers only Bing and Google in the dropdown, and not the full list. If I select either, it will set it.
In short, Vivaldi is now no use to me if I am forced to use a default search engine which I do not trust.
Please fix this, as it has spoilt a decent browser.

@Mawkin Could you not bookmark a preferred search engine and use that.?
Odd because i have not experienced this with the linux version.

You cannot change the default search engine after upgrading to version 5.3.
Yahoo has been set everywhere, changing the default search engine is not possible ?

@kurai - thanks. Disabling the extensions, making the changes and restarting the extensions works just fine.
