Vivaldi keep losing my cookies/passwords
-
Always happening at random, sometimes after restarting Vivaldi, Sometines after a few restarts,
Sometimes even without restarting, suddenly sites login page is displayed while a few seconds ago I was logged inI have Vivaldi, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, FireFox, Opera, WaterFox Classic, Otter browser, Brave and Old Opera 12.
Among all these browsers only Vivaldi is forgetting my cookies/passwords!!
I tested this by logging to several sites from all theses browsers and they all remembered my
cookies/passwords except Vivaldi.I tried all installation types, For user only, for all users and portable, all same problem!
So what's going here?!
Why Vivaldi is forgetting my cookies/passwords?
Why do I have to retype passwords again and again despite that I asked Vivaldi to remember them?Why is this a problem only with Vivaldi but not other browsers on the same Windows?
Vivaldi 5.2.2623.41 (Stable channel) (64-bit) Revision 30e6417c5626b4d153569eed731749c3d624a1df OS Windows 10 Version 21H2 (Build 19044.1645) JavaScript V8 10.0.139.17 User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/100.0.4896.147 Safari/537.36 Command Line "C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe" --flag-switches-begin --flag-switches-end --save-page-as-mhtml Executable Path C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe Profile Path C:\Users\Marrawan\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default

It happened again Just now, in less than 2 hours Vivaldi forgot all passwords/cookies

@marrawan
Hi, can you check your cookie settings, please?
If you have session only activated it delete all cookies but I don´t understand why your passwords are wiped.
Are they shown if you open chrome://settings/passwords ?Cheers, mib

This is a clean Vivaldi installation, I have not changed any settings because I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem so I did a clean installation..
When I noticed this problem for the first time, the first thing popped in mind is the cookies settings, and found that they are unmodified: Accept All Cookies, 3rd party cookies block in incognito mode which I don't use.
As I said before, sometimes I restart Vivaldi and it still remembers cookies and passwords, So session only cookies is not the problem cause.
Beside, Vivaldi forgets not only cookies but passwords too which have nothing to do with cookies persistence.
I can see that browsing history is preserved, actually everything else is preserved, zoom level, tabs, search engines,.... everything is preserved as it should be except passwords and cookies!
I can see cookies and passwords in settings, they are there but still Vivaldi forget them at any time.

@marrawan
Ah OK, just guessing, do you use any cleaning software?
I am mainly Linux user but on my Windows 11 installs Vivaldi never "forgot" passwords since years. I use the stable and snapshot builds.
I hope some user with more Windows knowledge steps by to help you troubleshoot your issue.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin
Thanks for the heads up again!If I am using a cleaning software why would that affect only Vivaldi and not other browsers or any other applications for that matter? All other application run just fine including browsers that are, just like Vivaldi, Chromium based like Chrome, Edge, Opera.
I never used any software that specifically alters browsers data or settings. But I use some tool that change some general Windows privacy settings, like disable telemetry, Sending error reports, Ads in start menu and other spying stuff.
If any of these Windows privacy settings are vital for Vivaldi to work properly then why Vivaldi
does not inform the user about these settings instead if just misbehave and make the user confused and frustrated?Aren't password and cookies something private to Vivaldi and shouldn't be affected by modifications to the OS?

@marrawan
I meant CCleaner for example, many user get problems also with anti virus software because Chrome, Edge etc. are whitelisted by default but Vivaldi is alien.
May a cleaning software delete the file "Login Data" in your profile, if you start Vivaldi it create a new blank file.
I am not aware Vivaldi depends on any Windows privacy settings, I use "OO Shut up" for some time to block Windows to call home to much.
This does not influence Vivaldi in any way.Cheers, mib

As part of my troubleshooting process I uninstalled my AV and disabled Windows AV.

"OO Shut up"
Yeah that's the tool I'm using and the only one!
I just used the "Undo all changes 'factory reset'" function to revert back changes I made.But the question remains: Does Vivaldi really depends on Windows settings (which can be customized by users) to properly save/load cookies/passwords? If yes I need to know these settings.

@Marrawan
No, I use Vivaldi and the forum since 6 years and nobody ever report password loss in combination with Windows privacy settings.Cheers, mib

No.
However, Cookies/Passwords are encrypted with your local OS user credentials. So if you change user for instance, they will be lost. I'm assuming you don't do this regularly.
You'll need to figure out what on your system is causing this. Make note of the times you see it happening and try to figure out what might be running in the background and potentially be set to clear such data.
For instance, I use CCleaner, and it can be set to regularly clear cookies/passwords for browsers, including Vivaldi. In fact it has its own settings for Vivaldi - where the default is to clear everything which is obviously bad and needs to be set properly before running.

For what it's worth, I'm being plagued with problems with Vivaldi v5.x on both Windows and MacOS lately.
Slowness/freezing, and either losing my extension data/settings or killing/removing my extensions entirely.
Something is going very strange in Vivaldi-land lately..

This happens to me all the time since I started using Vivaldi. Cookies and/or passwords are gone after a restart. Doesn't happen all the time. I think it never happend when using vivaldi://restart but just now it happend when I restarted my PC.
I'm on Ubuntu 18.04. -
@flurl Please ask for Vivaldi on Linux issues at https://forum.vivaldi.net/category/35/vivaldi-for-linux
-
Same problem here with Windows version, cookies will be gone randomly on Vivaldi startup, even though I have whitelisted 'em.
-
Since my last comment ITT, I've definitely experienced the issue with Vivaldi losing my saved passwords.
I use Vivaldi on all the supported platforms but since I only have passwords saved on macOS that is where I noticed this.
So this is clearly not a platform-specific issue.

I have no loss of passwords and logins, and i am running the tester's internal 5.4 Nightly with Sync.

@kendysk - Using this forum is not very intuitive. Don't think I've ever had to read instructions for posting on a board before, but hell-if I can find how to delete my post! (Which was meant to be a reply on someone elses comment altogether!) Can someone please tell me? Thanks
