Solved Copy on highlight when opening a new tab
-
I've filed a bug (VB-87072) and posted on r/vivaldibrowser, however I've not heard anything back and can't believe that no one else (especially the Vivaldi devs whom use Linux and especially because they also use Jira, where this issue is prevalant) has run into this issue.
This began happening with Vivaldi 5.1.2567.39 (on both Manjaro Linux and Ubuntu 18.04 & 20.04) and is still happening with 5.1.2567.73, using KDE desktop in each instance.
The issue:
When I select & copy some text in one tab (e.g., I'd like to search the text) and open a new tab (ctrl+T), when I try to paste the text I'd just copied, it pastes a partial URL, which to me makes it seem that some sort of text/url is copied upon opening a new tab. This did not happen before the aforementioned update and it really ruins my workflow.Steps to reproduce:
In the address bar:- On Linux, open any web page with text, highligh the text (so as to copy it).
- Ctrl+t to open new tab
- try to perform a search with, say 'w' for wikipedia, by pasting the text you just copied (w + space + paste)
- see that the address bar text has overridden the text you had highlighted in step 1
In a Jira comment box:
- On Linux, open any web page with text, highlight the text (so as to copy it).
- Switch to Jira task with the comment text box open.
- try to paste your highlighted text
- (if possible) look at your paste buffer and see your copied text has be overridden.
I created bug VB-87072 if that's helpful but have heard nothing and have had this issue for about 2 months now.

FYI this was fixed in 5.2.2623.26 and can be marked as 'solved' (I'm not sure how to do that or if I'm even able to).

@t0ken407 I can’t reproduce this. But your workflow could be improved anyway. Try to make a command chain with the »search selection with engine« command. If you just want to search some text on your default engine, or open a highlighted address, try this ☛ https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/505356

There's a command chain required for this?
My context menu has options for searching with my default search engine, searching with any of my other search engines, and in case I've selected an URL, going to that url in a new tab. All of these are default, not added by me.
-
@max06net Of course, but that requires an awful amount of clicking and looking through the list for your target engine. Better to use quick commands or a keyboard shortcut for it, that’s better in terms of “workflow”.

Mhm... depends on the person in front.
I mean, I'm already using my mouse for selecting the text, 2 clicks for searching with my default engine or opening an URL are not too bad. It'd probably take me longer to switch back to keyboard... (okay, mostly working without keyboard anyways). -
@max06net Yeah, you can select text with keyboard too, you should look into Vimium : P
I have no decent advice for mouse warriors. To me it’s all about not having to focus on what pixel I’m clicking and on building muscle memory for common tasks without having to concentrate on the UI on the screen too much. -

This is somewhat helpful, though the problem I see with that is that I use many search engines (I'm an inquisitive fellow, heh), and so I'd need a diff command for each one? Which, I suppose is not far off from ctrl+T, <search engine nick>, <query> but at best I see that as a lateral move, not necessarily an improvement.@luetage, assuming you have a multiple search engines configured, when you open a new tab (ctrl+t) and then enter e.g. "w" (to search wikipedia) does it not automatically copy whatever history/bookmark/suggestion populates, thus populating (or ruining) your paste buffer?EDIT:
This is actually pretty cool, thank you for the recommendation! Definitely an improvement, I stand corrected! Lol -
Fair enough.
I know vimium and I use it from time to time, mostly for in-page navigation. I also spent a lot of time on consoles in my past. Today my lazy ... butt loves to lie on my couch while working, and my front facing... buffer is not helpful when it comes to using the keyboard, blindly, with a high hit rate. So I learned to use my mouse and optimized my workflows to a point where I can compare myself to my colleagues in speed and error rate without getting in trouble.
(Rest assured, I'm not going to convince anyone to get used to pointing devices or windows. On the other side it gets frustrating if "experts" (not pointing at you) try to tell me something about their superior system and working style.)
