Solved Please add a default keyboard shortcut to show/hide Tab Bar
-
Hello. Please add a default keyboard shortcut to show/hide just the Tab Bar. I use Quick Commands and Menus a lot and even add keyboard shortcuts as needed in addition to showing/hiding the entire UI via keyboard shortcuts, but I keep finding myself wishing there was a default keyboard shortcut just for showing and hiding the Tab Bar (located to the right of my Vivaldi Browser windows). Please add one.

add keyboard shortcuts as needed
Why not add one for tab bar?
Settings/Keyboard - View - Tab Bar -
@tbgbe I've done just that.
I'm currently using SHIFT + COMMAND + F10 on macOS since COMMAND + F10 hides all the UI so it's relatively easy to remember.

@getraf I think there is a good case for not adding a default shortcut for this function. New users may hit the shortcut by accident and wonder what happened when they notice that the tab bar has disappeared.
Since it is simple to add oneβs own shortcut to this function, that should satisfy users who do want to hide the tab bar.
View Address Bar also has no default shortcut.
-
Why not just add auto hide/shrink Tabbar function instead? That's what we really needed, no more hitting the same shortcut repeatedly hundreds of times everyday & always get more webpage display automatically when you don't need the tabbar.

Most people don't use vertical tabs.
-
@pesala I'm just showing what auto hide can look like. Actually, horizontal tabbar also can use auto-hide/shrink feature...
For example, 2 level stacking doesn't need to display 2 rows all the time; thumbnail can shrink into title; some people prefer only see the tabbar when they want to access the tabbar; then I know there are a lot of people prefer automate tabbar during fullscreen mode like other modern browser.
The idea is we shouldn't always rely on manual toggle via keyboard/MG repeatedly for something can be done automatic & with less effort.

@pesala Good point. Do you believe new users would hit / use the SHIFT + COMMAND + F10 keyboard combination, or one like it, by accident?
-
@dude99 I hadn't even considered something like this. That's a pretty good idea. I can picture it working well with the Tab Bar on the left or right hand side of Vivaldi browser windows. Maybe we can do both? Your idea and the default keyboard shortcut combination idea?
-
@pesala This is true. Most people use default settings instead of options like vertical tabs. That said, the Vivaldi shows it's a unique project catering to people who are interested in using more than the default settings when the first question it asks is; βHow much browser do you want?β via it's main website https://vivaldi.com See my Screenshot here... https://share.getraf.net/yAuKGeOB

Good forward thinking. You're looking at this from various angles. That's useful.

I have a question, coming from a true desire to learn. I may be missing something.
This Vivaldi Community Forum thread is not a how-to request. This is a feature request.
In other words, I'm not asking how do I add a custom keyboard shortcut to show/hide Tab Bar in a Vivaldi browser window; I'm requesting that a default keyboard shortcut to show/hide Tab Bar be added.

Why is this thread now marked as βsolvedβ?
-
@getraf It's a rarely used command (by which I mean that many people never use it), and it's already possible to assign a shortcut to that command in settings. For these reasons, adding a default shortcut (affecting all users) is not likely to happen.
It was marked as solved for the benefit of people who might look for a shortcut to show/hide the Tab Bar and stumble upon this thread. -
@pafflick Thanks for the answer.
