Hello, newcomer here! Opened an account at Vivaldi at the recommendation of a friend to improve my network security! I live in Orange, Virginia in the USA.
-
@ingolftopf If I already have a mastodon account on a different instance, can I set one up here too?
-
@charleslaughlin Yes. You can even merge them if you like. Mastodon allows this. But you already have a Vivaldi Social account on Mastodon. You don't have to set it up, just log in to it and then customize it however you like.

@charleslaughlin, welcome and enjoy Vivaldi, and yes, with your account you can log in direct in Vivaldi social, independent if you have also an another account in other instance. You can use both or merge it.

@Ayespy Thank you! Do you have any guidance on merging Mastodon accounts? Based on my experience setting one up and later changing instances, I suspect it's not simple!
-
@charleslaughlin Try looking at the official documentation: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/

@charleslaughlin First you need to have two accounts (as you do now) and then you need to create an alias and then you can migrate from the old account to the new. What this does is redirect anyone looking for your old account to the new one add the old account data to the new account, in effect, a merger.

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but since this is a redirect and I am in effect "moving" from my former instance (zirk.us) to vivaldi, does that mean I would no longer belong to my old instance, so that, for example, what comes up in my "local" feed will be vivaldi only, or both?
-
@charleslaughlin I'm not familiar enough with how Mastodon works to answer that . Sorry.

On the above link that @Ayespy provided, it describes what occurs when an account is moved from one instance to another.
