Browser became slow for no reason
-
I've been using vivaldi for a few months. Last week vivaldi started getting really slow for no reason. I at the time had only 2 extensions (self made one and return youtube dislikes), though both have been installed for some time. I've disabled both just in case and there has been no change. Other apps on my computer are fine without any lag. Other browsers don't have any lag. Chrome had a similar issue leading me to start using vivaldi, but now vivaldi started being slow. Chrome is back to being normal speed. In additional to disabling 2 extensions, I've also disabled animations and cleared my cached. Nothing has worked. would appreciated if additional ways to return browser functionality were available.

@depperm Can you please explain what "slow" and "lag" means in your case?
Starting program?
Loading of a web page (progress bar)?
Display of web content?
Interaction with user interface? Please check Troubleshooting issues.
-
I have been experiencing same sort of problem since I updated to the latest version:
- it is slower than before and less responsive both while working on the web (Google Apps) and while moving tabs/working with the browser
- often in the tabs I had opened, I see the "dead bird" without any reasons: then if I reload the page: no progress bar displayed, byte and object counters work fine but in the end the content doesn't appear. I have to close the tab and open that again.
Trubleshooting applied with no results
The only extension installed is the Google Copy&Paste tool.
No other changes in PC configuration.Vivaldi 5.0.2497.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit)

@doctorg
Slow/lag means opening settings window, changing tabs & scrolling takes several seconds to process and load/update. Clicking/typing in input fields is slow to focus and slow to update as I type. Basically doing anything with vivaldi is slow.Further debugging found this question: https://askubuntu.com/questions/596704/very-slow-chromium-browser and disabling web-acceleration has worked in returning functionality for me
-
@depperm In most cases disabling HWA causes slower display of Vivaldi UI and videos. Not faster.
Update GPU/chipset drivers from chip producer website may help.
What is show for vivaldi://gpu (copy & paste here) with </> button.
Sometimes enabling
️experimental setting at vivaldi://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist could help to get better performance.

@depperm thanks, this doesn't solve the issue

To clarify it doesn't matter the what site I visit, everything is slow. I don't believe any site I visited is nefarious or causing the problem, I believe the issue lies with the browser as every site has the same issues (but the issues don't exist with other browsers-to me rules out firmware/hardware issue).

@depperm I can see that you have disabled Hardware Acceleration. May be i was not clear, I wanted to know what was sown with HWA active.
And which GPU and driver do you have?

this wasn't a problem a month ago
But in Vivaldi the Chromium core version changed since November 2021. That can cause issue in Vivaldi or Windows with GPU drivers.
New graphics drivers can improve performance ans patch older bugs. If you do not want to update, that is ok.
Leave HWA off and be happy if you do not encounter any issues.Have a nice day.

To a rough approximation:
At the bottom level, driver programs communicate with a computer's physical hardware.
O/S modules communicate with drivers.
A chromish web browser (including its chromium core) communicates with the O/S.
A browser extension communicates with the browser. How well a driver design functions in a real world computer is impacted by all the elements sitting above it. Changes, improvements, feature additions, or even new bugs in any level of software sitting above the driver level can surface problems, limitations, or bugs in a particular driver's design. Consequently, drivers generally should be kept up-to-date with improvements from their manufacturer to minimize such issues.
That said, until one updates to the latest driver(s) and tests it, there's no way to know for certain that an outdated driver may or may not be causing a particular problem... but it remains a likely candidate until one knows otherwise. This is especially true for graphics chips/boards/drivers which are one of the most dynamic, evolving areas of modern computer designs.

this has apparently solved - I still have issues in tab drag&drop that I'll report in a separate thread
Thanks!

I experience the same or similar issue.
After some time Vivaldi starts to slow down considerably (opening a new tab takes sometimes more then 10seconds). It happens regardless of HWA (which is usually on). and in the newest stable release (5.0.2497.48) on Windows 10.
The issue is getting better if I start closing tabs after it becomes noticeable, but it becomes only fast again if I do a full restart of the browser.
My system should be easily able to handle about 100-300 open tabs at times, at least I can see no significant CPU/RAM usage that would create a resource issue.
I haven't been able to identify a possible culprit yet (extensions are limited to switchyOmega, ublock origin and keepassxc). My first guess was that it might have some RAM leak or similar background as it appears only after time (like several hours usually). But for that I would expect to see more RAM Usage or something like that.

Vivaldi has never been the fastest browser for me but yes I've noticed that it seem to get slower over time.
