@Ayespy said in Vivaldi does not remember custom selected image/background for theme.:

It could be a Chromium limitation.

my previous vivaldi version 2.6.something had no trouble with same file and same filename. I assume the chromium version was better back then. anyway, that is not a reason to blame me for the bug.

@shaihkritzer You are not being blamed for anything. But a too-long filename is not something happening in Vivaldi - it's something happening at your end. If you think Vivaldi should handle longer filenames, you are welcome to file a bug report that the inability to do so is, in your opinion, a bug.

nobody told about any limitations upon background images. if none applies, I assume literally ANY image (except damaged ones) could be successfully used as a background image in vivaldi.

if not, upon selecting image, file requirements should be provided.

easiest way to drop your responsibility for this is to blame user for the issue (typical support strategy) = 'problem at your end'.

also fun part is that nobody is interested in investigating why the old vivaldi version had no such problem ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@shaihkritzer This is why there is such a thing as bug reports. If you do not report a bug, it will not be addressed. Complaining to ambassadors and mods on the forum is not reporting a bug. @Pesala has ever experienced your problem. The moderator @ayespy has never experienced your problem. I have not seen your problem reported elsewhere for current versions. Hence, we will not be reporting it. That's not our job/role in the community. You have experienced the problem, so you can/should report the problem. Then testers backstage can try to reproduce it, and communicate with devs about it. That's why I linked you (above) to the procedure for bug reporting. I'm pointing you to the route for a possible solution. Why are you fixated on blame?

I've been experiencing an odd issue with custom start page background images on Linux. This doesn't happen on Windows.

Basically whenever I choose a custom background, it reverts to a plain grey background once I restart Vivaldi. Sometimes it takes two or three restarts, but it always disappears. If I use one of the built-in backgrounds, it works fine and never disappears.

At first I wondered if it could be something related to symlinks since I have my wallpapers on a different partition linked to my home folder, but even navigating to the images the long way (not using the symlink) has the same issue. I haven't been able to find a pattern in file sizes or dimensions yet.

Has anybody else had this issue?

@GyozaGuy Export the theme as zip file, import it again.

I'll give it a try, thanks for the suggestion!

I have just been using the dark theme with a custom background picked from the start page, maybe that's part of the issue? ๐Ÿค” I'll see if creating an actual theme with my background has the same behavior.

@GyozaGuy Canโ€™t reproduce your issue, picking a background from the startpage for a default theme survives restarts. Try to replicate on a fresh profile.

                      Will do!

Also just to verify, you are picking a custom background from the start page right? Because all of the included backgrounds work, it's just custom ones that disappear.

@luetage With a new profile it happened right away. I created the new profile (simple settings, chose the Issuna theme, didn't import anything), then chose a custom background from my collection from the start page. I closed the profile, then reopened it and the background was gone.

                        EDIT

On the new profile I tried creating a new theme and setting a custom background. So far it's working, so I wonder if the issue lies somewhere in setting a custom background with one of the default themes.

@GyozaGuy Yeah, thatโ€™s something Iย tried and cannot confirm. Make a new theme for now. If you do create a custom theme by editing one of the default themes, or one of the downloaded themes, itโ€™s always a good idea to export it anyway. Itโ€™s even a good idea when you create a theme from scratch. So I donโ€™t see an immediate problem.

@sgunhouse Yes of course I empty everything all the time per browser settings and then daily beyond that with utilities such as CCleaner. Housekeeping should not interfere with the house - I mean when you vacuum your rugs, the rugs don't disappear, right? I'm trying really hard to love Vivaldi since I committed to it a couple of years ago. My life is in Vivaldi's hands pretty much, regarding email. There seem to be some twitches about email which I can understand, but such a seemingly simple issue as background image, it's puzzling and alarming that Vivaldi can't get that right after many updates.

@makemereal Housekeeping should absolutely not interfere with the house. It's a shame that for over five years, CCleaner has never figured out what files/folders in Vivaldi are the house, and what files are the dirt.
