I'll give it a try, thanks for the suggestion!

I have just been using the dark theme with a custom background picked from the start page, maybe that's part of the issue? 🤔 I'll see if creating an actual theme with my background has the same behavior.

@GyozaGuy Can’t reproduce your issue, picking a background from the startpage for a default theme survives restarts. Try to replicate on a fresh profile.

          Will do!

Also just to verify, you are picking a custom background from the start page right? Because all of the included backgrounds work, it's just custom ones that disappear.

@luetage With a new profile it happened right away. I created the new profile (simple settings, chose the Issuna theme, didn't import anything), then chose a custom background from my collection from the start page. I closed the profile, then reopened it and the background was gone.

            EDIT

On the new profile I tried creating a new theme and setting a custom background. So far it's working, so I wonder if the issue lies somewhere in setting a custom background with one of the default themes.

@GyozaGuy Yeah, that’s something I tried and cannot confirm. Make a new theme for now. If you do create a custom theme by editing one of the default themes, or one of the downloaded themes, it’s always a good idea to export it anyway. It’s even a good idea when you create a theme from scratch. So I don’t see an immediate problem.

@luetage Yeah so far the new theme has fixed my problem, so I'm satisfied. I should have tried this a long time ago. Thanks again!

The bug with the background image disappearing (VB-85062) has been fixed in Vivaldi 5.7. 🙂

@makemereal Are you emptying the cache on exit? I did on one of my devices and had this problem.

@sgunhouse Yes of course I empty everything all the time per browser settings and then daily beyond that with utilities such as CCleaner. Housekeeping should not interfere with the house - I mean when you vacuum your rugs, the rugs don't disappear, right? I'm trying really hard to love Vivaldi since I committed to it a couple of years ago. My life is in Vivaldi's hands pretty much, regarding email. There seem to be some twitches about email which I can understand, but such a seemingly simple issue as background image, it's puzzling and alarming that Vivaldi can't get that right after many updates.

@makemereal Housekeeping should absolutely not interfere with the house. It's a shame that for over five years, CCleaner has never figured out what files/folders in Vivaldi are the house, and what files are the dirt.

@ap0st0l said in Vivaldi does not remember custom selected image/background for theme.:

the picture is just 1MB... That's not a "large file size".

It is large, because when it is loaded from disk it is decompressed and uses much more RAM. Width x height x colour-depth.

                                  An image that is 3200 x 2400 x 24bpp is 22 Mbytes in RAM.

What is the image format? JPG decompression is very fast, but JP2 decompression is not.

                                    About RAM, don't worry, I have 32GB...

But sorry, maybe I was too fast to judge this time.
I recently changed disks letters, so probably Vivaldi "lost" the correct path to the picture.

However, if it's true, then maybe Vivaldi should copy the picture to its own directory, to avoid such situations...
That would be not a bug, but improvement.

@Ayespy Gosh I wish it was attributable to CCleaner. Checked on that just now. First cleared Vivaldi's browsing data via its own tool as I often do. Closed Vivaldi and ran CCleaner. Started Vivaldi and saw no problem with my chosen background image. Repeated the process and still the custom background is intact.

But sometimes I still get the all-red background, and it can repeat through a couple of re-starts of the browser, when it occurs, before I get the custom background to re-appear.

@makemereal Ah. This is not the loss of a background image. This is a coding problem that is very difficult to solve (because no one can tell what causes it yet) I have seen it here, with a grey background, and sometimes a couple of restarts are required to fetch the background image. I suspect a race condition (background should come up first, but sometimes a blank canvas beats it)

Pretty sure this will be resolved, but it cannot be reliably reproduced, produces no crash dump, etc. Processor and RAM speed seem to have an effect (not been seen on slower systems) but even that is not sure.

Please be patient and bear with us.

@Ayespy It kind of looks like a race situation now that you've used that term. The red I sometimes see derives from my Windows color scheme. I get it. Good luck with all that. Thanks for your consideration.
