Far too high CPU load on MacOS
-
For the last few versions the CPU load problem we already know has got worse again. It may or may not be related to videos (because I do view videos), but the high CPU remains even after having closed the last tab with youtube in it.
Here's what Activity Monitor reports:
-
@mbert Is this at idle or do you have tabs and extensions active?
-
It's during "normal use", i.e. tabs and extensions active.
-
@mbert Roughly how many tabs and extensions?
-
24 tabs, 8 extensions.
-
@mbert ....That explains it
-
You mean, one should not run vivaldi with 24 tabs and 8 extensions?
This had not been a problem before.
-
@mbert You have other apps open too right?and considering cpu at idle on mac it adds up but not entirely, so let me ask are there any particular tabs that need a lot of resources
-
Is there any way to find out which tabs drag more resources than others? While they are in background I'd expect them to behave well (OK, I know there's bad JS code).
Can I set background tabs to hibernate automatically after some time?
-
@mbert Yeah, i dont think theres a way around that
-
@mbert Oh wait i realised there's another part to your post, about hibernating tabs just right click on the tab and select "hibernate background tabs" that will hibernate all tabs

Well, but in order to be more resource friendly, would this not be a good idea? I mean - unless I configure it otherwise, automatically hibernating background tabs after a while should be fine for most people?

Not now. Please upvote this feature request:

As pointed out at the end of that thread, there is a Chrome extension to automatically hibernate the tabs.
I'm also suffering from a similar "hot macbook syndrome" :-). It's not necessarily Vivaldi's fault because Google Chrome does the same, too. The extension may be the solution for now.

Upvote means give it a thumbs-up? I've done that.

Thank you, I'll give that a shot.

You can also use the built in Task Manager (in the tools menu) in Vivaldi to see what tabs are using a lot of CPU.

Thank you, I had forgotten about this. It actually revealed significant CPU load by "Browser" and "GPU Process" while none of the open tabs exhibited significant load.

Same here, I got massive CPU usage and battery drain with vivaldi and I have no idea how to track down the source. All tabs and extensions are consuming less than 1% CPU, but then there's this massive 56.7% and 71.2% total CPU drain with vivaldi within the V task manager, that are not connected to any tab:
And there's no way to fix this for me. I tried hibernating tabs etc.
Happening on a MBP 2023 M2. -
Update: Even with all Tabs closed and all Plugins deactivated, it still consumes 73% of the CPU.
Any idea on this?
