How we made Vivaldi faster independent of Chromium

@catweazle: can you plz post a clearer image of 1st pic, looks interesting to me, can give insights to me for UI modification.
-
@code3 As I recall, each of these settings is in Themes (edit existing theme), but let me look.
Yeah - here it is. Menu/themes/edit theme:
-
@Ayespy I think you are in snapshot, not stable. I switched to snapshot to test this out and did get a start page background like I wanted:
I even made it into dark mode with this:#browser { background-blend-mode: hard-light; }
However, my thumbnails are back at the wrong default. At least setting the max to 3 gives more room for my background.
(I know this isn't the modding forum, but for anyone interested, the code I put together is below)nav.startpage-navigation * { padding: 3px 20px; } .tab { background-color: var(--colorBg); background: var(--colorBg); } .tabs-left .tab-position .tab, .tabs-right .tab-position .tab { margin: 1px 2px; border-radius: var(--radiusHalf); background: var(--colorBg); box-shadow: 0px 0px 20px var(--colorBgDarker); } #browser:not(.tabs-top) #tabs-tabbar-container { background-color: transparent; backdrop-filter: none; } .toolbar-mainbar, #header { background: transparent !important; } .startpage-navigation { background-color: transparent !important; box-shadow: none !important; } #browser { background-blend-mode: hard-light; }
-
@code3 Oops. I'm in the internal test version. Didn't realize these settings had not propagated to Stable yet.
-
@Ayespy Oh, right. Do web panels work for you or do they disappear on each relaunch?
-
@Abhimanyu , better, in this thread you will find a lot of inspirations
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/20106/post-your-color-scheme-at-vivaldi
-
@code3 They have never disappeared for me on any version (on any of my machines), and they still don't. So I can't reproduce that problem.
-
I would not trade a fast and feature-rich Vivaldi for the world, but frankly with the number of CPU processes and memory consumption, we are at least deserving of superior speed.
-
@Catweazle, thanks for sharing, but instead of colour scheme I was looking for possible button layout options, do we have a thread for that one too?
-
What a weird way of self-praise/self-promotion/flex. The browser is still significantly slower compared to other Chromium browsers and Widevine doesn’t even work properly. I tried using Vivaldi again, but when I realized Widevine doesn’t work, I gave up on it.

Try this (on Vivaldi) and see if the video works playing for you. It doesn’t work for me. Out of all the Chromium browsers that I tried, it only worked on Brave and Chrome, nothing else.
-
@Abhimanyu The Start Page layout can be modified without any mods in Settings, Start Page. You can choose the size of the thumbnails, number of columns, hide the Title and control buttons, etc.
-
@TianlanSha The video plays fine for me. The Widevine plugin is enabled in Settings, Webpages. What is your OS and Vivaldi version?
-
-
Lot of tracking going on with that site. Not a site i use or perhaps should use.
-
@Priest72 , I think the same, allowing third-party cookies to watch a video is the last thing that would happen to me to allow. Not a trustworth behavior of this page
-
@juanvase Yes. Blocking Third-Party cookies on that site prevents the video from playing.

Try this (on Vivaldi) and see if the video works playing for you. It doesn’t work for me.Initially i could not get it to stream in Vivaldi-Snapshot, with my default profile, nor in a Private Window.
Next i tried my Firefox Nightly standard profile -- also nope. However in FF-N Private Window it succeeds. I returned to proper FF-N & fiddled extensively with my uBlockOrigin custom dynamic filters, & i could get it to the point of showing the frame, but it stayed black. Disabling Enhanced Tracking Protection then made it stream correctly.
I returned to my default V-SS profile, tried to mimic my uBO settings from FF-N for that url, & also disabled V's Tracker&Blocker. I got it to that black frame earlier mentioned for FF-N. Suspecting it is likely one of my extensions,
or my filter list in V's Settings [even though afaik they should be temporarily off, atm, for this test], i finally launched a new V-SS window using my virgin clean profile [no extensions at all] --> success, it streams fine. I also found that i could re-enable V's TrackerBlocker in this virgin profile & it still streamed.Spoiler
So, based on my test, i presume that i have one or more extensions in my default profile interfering with it. I suggest you try it in a clean profile.
It doesn't work for me on a fresh install, which of course it would be fresh as Vivaldi doesn't work properly for me so I only install it to test it and then uninstall it again.

I use Windows 10 x64 20H2 and Vivaldi 3.7
And it doesn't work. It only works on Chrome and Brave.... oh yeah and in Edge.
-
@TianlanSha As mentioned above, you must allow third-party cookies.
-
@jacekn: Agree. Search history too slow (two year saved; i7 8086K OC 4.8GHZ/32G RAM/NVME 970EVO)
-
@jacekn: How does it work? Why is it that Vivaldi runs fine on my old laptop (i5 8GB), but not yours? Not trying to pick a fight with you or anything, I just want to know.
