@tbgbe Quoting
For some reason, an i386 version of a package was never published on Launchpad.
That sounds not like a bug, but like a sweet (unfortunate) incompetence
-
@npro What they have patched is only the prompt
// Disallow breaking the system. Do not prompt the user. c2out << _("This operation is not permitted because it will break the system.") << std::endl; c2out << _("Abort.") << std::endl;
https://github.com/pop-os/apt/pull/1
/edit: and "forked"
apt
's functionality somehow?. So they did it in their version and were asking from Debian to adopt it, omz.
if (stat("/etc/apt/break-my-system", &buffer) == 0) { // If `/etc/apt/break-my-system` is present, present the former prompt.

Zypper is much much better than apt, as is Fedora's dnf
yep, no wonder 5 years ago...
Broken dependency solving algorithm—this has been an Achilles heel of the Fedora package manager for a long time. DNF uses a state-of-the-art satisfiability (SAT)-based dependency solver. This is the same type of dependency solver used in SUSE’s and openSUSE’s Zypper.
https://www.linux.com/training-tutorials/what-you-need-know-about-fedoras-switch-yum-dnf/
Everyone's gotta give SUSE some more respect, despite all their tumbleweed-ing (in the desktop space).
-
@tbgbe Yes, for brevity [= laziness] i omitted that extra info above, but what you added gels with the various titbits i'd cumulatively osmotised around the interwebz. Fwiw, though it might not be clear from my earlier blurts, based on the little i know of "the incident", i don't personally blame the PopOS Dev themself, it's just "unfortunate" that they somehow chose to use buntu [hence apt] as their distro base, instead of [eg] oS Leap, Fedora WS etc [if they still only wanted a fixed-release paradigm]. Both those platforms have superior package management.

where's that hilarious video with that "man with a beard" -sry
- tearing Garuda apart lol, it should be in this thread, no?
Yeh pretty good, huh? Btw, there's a followup i also watched the other day ... no mercy for Garuda, heehee [i actually used to know some of the Garuda peeps from "before", but feel they've taken a wrong design direction here].

That may be so, but I don't see how any package manager can prevent a bug/cock-up in the build process causing havoc AFTER release.
Presumably, they "may" ensure this should have been caught during testing before release. -

give SUSE some more respect
I'm really glad i did use TW for 5 months, so i got to know it pretty well, but since thereafter discovering Arch/ies i couldn't return to oS. One of the hilarious things i loved about oS was their true aficionado status re HHGTTG. Not only in their fora, but even to the extent that they broke their Leap numbering convention deliberately as an honorarium... Leap 12, 13, 42, 15...
However, much as i truly do respect oS, its "dependency hell" hazard is something that i simply never experienced b4 my oS TW sojourn, nor after in my Arch/ies. Not Going Back.
Oh, i might add, re Fedora's package management. For me anyway, as a plodding plonker not expert, the advent of
dnf
changed the game for me. The olderyum
usually confused, scared & upset me, whereasdnf
is elegant & reliable, also quite fast.
OMZ!
Running upgrades with the Yum tool was starting to grow unacceptably slow (especially when compared to the likes of apt-get
How is that even possible?????????????????
-
@tbgbe I know how you can find out. Reformat your drive then install F, thence Steam. Rinse & repeat for oS. Then you'll have hard data, & we'll all finally know
The Truth
. No downsides, afaict... -
@guigirl But I've already done that with Pop! No problems.
-
@tbgbe Nah but atm you lack the objective data for comparison with oS & F on your HW. Do it, do it, do it... ya wouldn't wanna disappoint all your fans, wouldya?
-
@guigirl Only way to compare would be if Steam install is "borked" in those packages! Are you telling me it is?
-
@tbgbe No i dunno, that's the whole point -- we need you & your insatiable curiosity to sally forth & discover! You're our last chance, Obiwan Kenobi.

In that case, I'll have the power.
I may find out but then I'll deny you all that knowledge!! -
@tbgbe Right, in that case...
Release the Ewoks!
-
@guigirl This is not the Ape you are looking for.
-
@tbgbe Typo... lemme fix it for you, fully gratis too!
This is not the Apt you are looking for.

Oh golly, i found another, albeit quite different.

what a gem

Just showed Mint the door to replace it with Manjaro Cinnamon. Does that make me an Archer? Gotta say, the DE is quite familiar, but the operation is faster and smoother. Also, it offered me the choice between libre office and softmaker office. No question. Softmaker every time.

As an American you can use it to see how long the tea should stay in the harbour.I really like KTeaTime; it's a great custom timer
Not needed with Vivaldi ofc, but otoh, comes in handy for those times V isn't running [eg, updates, backups, or spending some quality Nightly time].
