For some reason, an i386 version of a package was never published on Launchpad.

That sounds not like a bug, but like a sweet (unfortunate) incompetence

/edit: and "forked" apt's functionality somehow? . So they did it in their version and were asking from Debian to adopt it, omz.

Broken dependency solving algorithm—this has been an Achilles heel of the Fedora package manager for a long time. DNF uses a state-of-the-art satisfiability (SAT)-based dependency solver. This is the same type of dependency solver used in SUSE’s and openSUSE’s Zypper.

@tbgbe Yes, for brevity [= laziness] i omitted that extra info above, but what you added gels with the various titbits i'd cumulatively osmotised around the interwebz. Fwiw, though it might not be clear from my earlier blurts, based on the little i know of "the incident", i don't personally blame the PopOS Dev themself, it's just "unfortunate" that they somehow chose to use buntu [hence apt] as their distro base, instead of [eg] oS Leap, Fedora WS etc [if they still only wanted a fixed-release paradigm]. Both those platforms have superior package management.

That may be so, but I don't see how any package manager can prevent a bug/cock-up in the build process causing havoc AFTER release.
Presumably, they "may" ensure this should have been caught during testing before release.

I'm really glad i did use TW for 5 months, so i got to know it pretty well, but since thereafter discovering Arch/ies i couldn't return to oS. One of the hilarious things i loved about oS was their true aficionado status re HHGTTG. Not only in their fora, but even to the extent that they broke their Leap numbering convention deliberately as an honorarium... Leap 12, 13, 42, 15...

However, much as i truly do respect oS, its "dependency hell" hazard is something that i simply never experienced b4 my oS TW sojourn, nor after in my Arch/ies. Not Going Back.

Oh, i might add, re Fedora's package management. For me anyway, as a plodding plonker not expert, the advent of dnf changed the game for me. The older yum usually confused, scared & upset me, whereas dnf is elegant & reliable, also quite fast.

@tbgbe I know how you can find out. Reformat your drive then install F, thence Steam. Rinse & repeat for oS. Then you'll have hard data, & we'll all finally know The Truth. No downsides, afaict...

Just showed Mint the door to replace it with Manjaro Cinnamon. Does that make me an Archer? Gotta say, the DE is quite familiar, but the operation is faster and smoother. Also, it offered me the choice between libre office and softmaker office. No question. Softmaker every time.

Not needed with Vivaldi ofc, but otoh, comes in handy for those times V isn't running [eg, updates, backups, or spending some quality Nightly time].
