How Vivaldi browser is different from Google Chrome

@shadowxt said in How Vivaldi browser is different from Google Chrome:
The context menu when you right click has always been there for years. On the last major release, they actually noted that they added the "New Tab from Link Opens in Background" as a new feature.
This new "feature" (just another tabs option in fact) is done only to mimic Firefox/Chrome behavior...
Some users wanted the "Open Link in New Tab" item in the link context menu to open a background tab by default, and didn't want to use the "Open Link in New Background Tab" item instead. -
I don´t use the context menu, Shift +middle click on a link open it in a new tab, only with middle click in background tab, easy.

Open in background tab does not work. Open up any speed dial and click on a button. Instead of a background tab, it opens in the foreground.
Full screen mode is broken. Open up any video in Youtube in full screen. Press control+W or close with mouse gestures. It would bring back the vivaldi main window in full screen mode.
I can't confirm this.
Open in background works as it should.
Closing YT video in fullscreen restores the normal Vivaldi window.Tested on latest snapshot, but never noticed it before, and I'm opening in background hundreds of links and speed dials every day.

Why have pre-bundled Google extensions become a part of the the browser? They were not included a couple of stables ago

Which pre-bundled Google extensions are you talking about?
-
@iAN-CooG See Settings, Privacy:
-
@Pesala ah those, not the extensions you actually install in the extensions page. They're pratically Google services which have been always part of the chromium core, and now Vivaldi finally lets you de/activate them on demand.
-
Many services were disabled in flags, we've always had that ability
Here's an older article that has a list of ones Microsoft disabled
https://9to5google.com/2019/04/09/chromium-edge-browser-disables-google-services/But Google keeps adding new ones that are finding their way into Vivaldi (and other chromium based browsers). That is my issue
-
@sjudenim , this shows that Chromium is not really OpenSource, as long as a multinational monopoly like Google has control over it. It is a Trojan to enter codes that we do not want

@shadowxt: The problem is in your weird way of using a browser. I never heard that someone close a tab while it is in full screen mode, and except that suddenly in new tab you are off from full screen mode. I never do that, so I never had that problem. You first turn off the full screen, with Esc or whatever, then close the tab.
If that behavior was not before last stable release, and if they fixed it in snapshot as someone already confirmed, you can't except it in minor security update of old stable version. You should wait for new stable version, which is 3.6. Or use snapshot version...For other problem, i don't see it. As others mention, there are few options for opening tabs in background. I don't see a problem in using middle click. If you are able to use a mouse, then I don't se the problem in using all tree clicks. If the problem is moving a finger 0,5 cm then... And that option you mention is not what you think should do, as others explained, so it's not a bug.

@tharon: You can already use mail client if you enable it in vivaldi://experiments/
-
@senja You don't open up youtube in full screen and when you are done, close the screen? Are you kidding me? That is exactly how most people watch a video on some of these channels. Who wants to watch a small screen? You obvously don't know what you are talking about. I usually close it with my mouse gestures and it saves me from pressing the ESC button. That is the EXACT behavior prior to changes. Even the developers noted that it was a bug and it was fixed on the development version. All I asked was for the bug to be fixed on the stable version.

I mentioned before that I'm on stable version and that is where its still broken. I know they may have fixed on the snapshots, but I avoid snapshots like the plague due to continuous bugs. All I ask for is a stable browser. I like the versions they had about three releases ago, but made the mistake of updating because of a new feature and I have regretted since. I can't even uninstall and install the older versions since it breaks the browser. I'm stuck with a version that works, but still has annoying bugs. They just had an update of the stable release about a day ago and the features are still broken.

@TbGbe Jesus. How many times did I mentioned that defeats the purpose of adding the new option. I'll move on from the subject because I can care less. I have the "Force Background" extension and it makes the browser work EXACTLY the way I want. Left mouse button opens a link in the BACKGROUND. Not the right mouse button and context menu, no the middle mouse button. The left button with one click.
-
@ra-mon That is exactly how I want it. To open Link in New tab and in the background. It obviously doesn't work because it opens the link in a new tab and then switches focus to the new tab that was opened. It doesn't for the tab to the "background". So now when I see a link and press on it, it switches me out of the original screen and I have to go back to the screen. The whole point is so I can click on 5-10 interesting links on a web page or speed dial and have it open on the background and then go through one by one.
It just seems logical that if you label a option as "New Tab from Link Opens in Background" that it opens in the background and not foreground. Am I missing something here?

No it doesn't!
It simply does not mean what you want it to mean!
BTW my name is not Jesus

@TbGbe Lets move on from the subject. I have "Force Background" extension and it makes the program work the way it should. All the chrome flavors of the browsers are all the same core so the only differentiating part is the front end design. I think having a lot of options to control the interface allows people to customize. If Vivaldi didn't have the best tab customization, I would have used other browsers. It is the only one that comes close to the original Opera browser that is no longer supported. We actually have much better browsers a few years ago and the ones today are turds compared to those versions. The only issue that less and less web sites are supporting the older browsers forcing us to move to newer versions.
-
@boruta: You mean the "Clear cookies and site data when you quit Vivaldi" and "Always clear cookies when windows are closed" options (and other options) you get when you goto
chrome://settings/cookies
(even in Vivaldi)?I would guess that those haven't been added to the
vivaldi://settings/privacy/
Cookies section because Vivaldi hasn't gotten around to it yet or they feel that those settings are advanced settings where it's assumed that advanced users will figure out that they're atchrome://settings/cookies

I've just tested on a stable version. Opening in the background works as it should. Are you sure that you haven't changed some setting that changes this behaviour.
I can confirm the second issue. Closing tab while watching YT in full screen, closes the tab, but doesn't exit full screen. That is not what happens in the latest snapshot, seems is already fixes and should be included in the next stable.
On the other hand, when in fullscreen, why closing tab should exit fullscreen? I know that in this case it is wanted, but in general it is not the expected scenario.

I'm using Firefox since I first used internet.. Now I'm thinking about switching, and I still kinda hesitate to use chromium browser.. I don't like google, and I like some Firefox only extensions.
Should I chose Vivaldi instead of blue moon or icecat?
