Switch to disable picture-in-picture / video popout icon
-
@cejno Yes, some people do want it and it is not for no reason.
If you use the Picture-in-Picture feature the icon makes it easier to enable. Formerly, users had to right-click twice on videos to get the context menu from which to select it.
Most users don't use PiP. For them (me included) it is useless.
The latest snapshot makes it less obtrusive and also offers an option to disable it completely. Please search before ranting.

@mib2berlin This problem appears in the stable version, too.

An annoying icon has been floating around my face for nearly 2 months, and there isn't any way to disable or hide it completely even now? What's happened Vivaldi? You're my default browser since the beginning. You're bragging about the customization and I was happy with it until recently. When this damn icon appeared on stable build, I don't like it but thought "just give them some time to fix it" (like the bug which make the left most tab disappear after closing Vivaldi was fixed in few day). And now, after 2 minor updates and nearly 2 months, the **** option to get rid of that icon is still nowhere to be found.
P/s: don't ask me to using snapshot build, I don't use or need for new features, and don't want to encounter some bugs while using it. just need a simple and working browser with adblock.

@Gwen-Dragon And sorry, that's what you get for shove things people don't want into their face and take out the option to get rid of it while so proud of the "customization", also force them to wait so long for a basic feature: turn it off (I don't ask to completely remove the PIP feature that the dev team worked so hard for, just the icon). If you screwed over a loyal user and force them to say their anger out loud like this, it mean there's something very wrong.
But you're right, my anger won't help develop things faster. So I'm out of here, wait for the new build to be better

@Gwen-Dragon
Still waiting for an official explanation to clarify what went wrong, and why it took months to fix this.I won't blame anybody. Despite it was a major fault, it can happen. We are only human. But the way it has been handled was very unusual from the company.

@Nekomajin Please read the existing replies:
@jane-n said in Switch to disable picture-in-picture / video popout icon:
We're sorry to keep you waiting and we understand you. As @Ayespy said already, the feature is being rewritten and I confirm that on internal test builds it already works a lot better. The option to disable the Pop-out video button will come soon as well.
Thank you for your patience.What part of the feature is being rewritten do you not understand? Inevitably, rewriting a feature and testing it will take time. It seems to be largely fixed in the latest Snapshot builds but there is still a bug with the PiP window being blank or black on a secondary monitor.
The PiP icon also displays on Audio elements, which apparently is a Chromium bug.
When 2.12 Stable is released (not long now, I hope) no doubt these bugs will remain, but at least there is an option to disable the PiP icon on videos now. This does not work for audio.

@Pesala
Isn't it frustrating to be in write-only mode all the time?Just for you, I collect the most frequent questions asked by dozens of us:
- Why have they pushed an untested feature into stable?
- Why have they not implemented a turn off switch from the beginning?
- Why have they not published a hotfix to temporarily turn it off, for those who wanted?
- Why did it take a month to rewrite the whole feature?
- Why have they not given us an official explanation for two months?
And no, an official explanation is not a two line forum comment. I have switched to Vivaldi because of the clean communication with their users.
I don't want to point fingers. I want to know the reasons. And if you can't understand it, you should not reply to my posts at all, ever.
-
@Nekomajin and what will happen if they won't give you any explanations?
-
@iAN-CooG
I will be very disappointed. I know the company different. -
@Nekomajin Isn't it frustrating to be in whine mode all the time?
- Why have they pushed an untested feature into stable? Because they did not heed my advice and that of some other users.
- Why have they not implemented a turn off switch from the beginning? Because they didn't have time to add it before the Stable release.
- Why have they not published a hotfix to temporarily turn it off, for those who wanted? Because it is not that important. Most of us figured out how to hide the icon.
- Why did it take a month to rewrite the whole feature? It takes as long as it takes. They cannot drop everything else to work on one issue.
- Why have they not given us an official explanation for two months? Jane gave one a month ago on March 6th.
- I don't want to point fingers. That is precisely what you are doing.
- I want to know the reasons. Reasons were given. The team is small, there is much to be done. They are sorry to keep you waiting, but if you cannot be patient you should not post any more about this issue.

This post is deleted! -
Guys, I understand that this is a bit frustrating to some of you, but please calm down. There's more of us here waiting for the fix, so let's have a little bit more patience, please. It's on the way!

@pafflick
You know, it's not a nice thing to delete the reply of only one participant... -
@Nekomajin Perhaps it is not, but the last post was a bit over the line and I don't think that it would be of any benefit to keep it here. May I remind you that this is a feature request forum - I don't think that the people who subscribed to this thread want to keep getting notifications because there is some argument going on (which could've been as well settled elsewhere).
So, if this keeps on going, we might delete a whole chunk of the offtopic comments or move them into a separate thread, but I hope that it won't be necessary if you guys will just stay cool. -
@pafflick
Look, I stated a fact, replying to Gwen-Dragon, that many of us would like to know how it could have happened, what have been the reasons. Personally I don't care whose fault it has been, I don't want to blame anyone, but it is very unusual from Vivaldi, to release an untested feature, a feature without a tun off switch AND both of these at the same time. If I remember correctly, the motto is "a browser for our friends". So if we are "friends", I think they owe us an explanation. Not an apology! But it is a highly dividing feature, plus it's buggy, and we still don't have any official word from the developers.I don't think my initial comment was offending towards anybody. But don't you think this was?
What part of the feature is being rewritten do you not understand?
We had several conflicts regarding this issue, and I explained him every time what I just did again above in this comment. But he keeps coming back with this "being rewritten" mantra, which is not what I am talking about.
So I would like to ask you to delete his comment as well. And I also would like to ask you to make it possible to block (non-mod) users on this forum, because I can't tolerate anymore him being offensive every time. Not just with me, but with many others as well.
-
@Nekomajin On the whole, with rare exceptions, Vivaldi does not issue "official explanations" and, on the whole, with rare exceptions, developers and admins don't engage users in conversations in the Forums. @jane-n or @gaelle_lo may decide to respond to your request for an official statement, or not. I'll understand either way. It's up to them.
But the usual course is, the Team merely fixes stuff, and lets everyone know when it's fixed.
It's clear to me that the developer(s) who wrote the initial implementation of a feature users had been demanding for a long time did not anticipate any backlash, did not see any reason to include a "turn off" switch, and no one saw anything wrong with including the feature when it seemed ready. When a bunch of users (for reasons that I still cannot personally connect with at all) kicked up a fuss, then the feature was looked at again. It became clear patching it was not practical, and it had to be re-written. It was re-written and is being tested in snapshots, for inclusion in the next stable. Mistakes happen. I do not anticipate an "official explanation" beyond has already been made public. If one is forthcoming, fine - and if one isn't, also fine.
Even assuming the re-written implementation makes it into stable, which I expect it will, I'm aware that refinements for it have already been considered - but there's no time for them at present. Too many hot irons in the fire.

The truth is, we've received reports about this thread from users that aren't even engaged in your discussion, hence the intervention.
But I've already explained why it's not a good idea to discuss such matters publically - especially in this thread. Therefore I'm locking it temporarily. It's Sunday, so the staff isn't at work ATM, but I believe that one of the community managers will also take a look at this soon. For now, there's nothing really that important that we could add here anyway.
