Switch to disable picture-in-picture / video popout icon
-
Another update and the thing is still there. I submitted a bug report a while ago and the team replied saying they were "aware of the problem" and were "working on it". Several updates later and the dam thing is still there, annoying me on every single video. I don't know why they need to "work on" something that they gratuitously added. A feature shouldn't be forced on all users just because a few wanted it. If you want users to decide on a feature, invite every user to a survey I ask if they say yes or no to it. And even if most say yes, add the option to disable it. Changing something that affects everybody because "a lot" of people want it is a bad idea. I consider this one of the most disastrous software decisions I've ever encountered. I'm seriously thinking of switching to another browser. I'll miss you, Vivaldi. Maybe I'll check in after a few months...

Asking for removal of a feature that might interest some people is egoistical.
I'm all about for keeping all the features, but selectable in settings. To impose a feature deteriorating the user experience is simply not ok. It has nothing to do with being "egoistical".
Vivaldi first promise on its home page is very simple:
From the look and feel, to how you interact with your browser, every aspect of Vivaldi can be tweaked and customized. You’re in control.
PiP in its current form should have never been implemented in the first place.
Before the PiP function, if you look through the forum, there were as many or even more requests from users to implement this function, than now those who ask to remove it again. The only ones that are reasonable are those who ask to place the button somewhere else or to do this function as an option. Asking to remove it completely is selfish, bypassing everyone who has voted for this function.

True .... but, don't forget that people who are active on this forum (or actively read it) are computer/browser minded, they get excited about new features, experiments, the latest from the latest, and so on. And that is fine and understandable
Just as understandable that a lot of people (like me) just want a browser they like, without all kind of things like PIP. So, all that is discussed here is really not re-presentable for the general Vivaldi user.
But, totally agreed: it should not be disabled. The function to enable or disable is the normal and logical way to go. And that is the whole point of the discussion actually: this all would not be blown up if it that implemented right away. Presuming everybody wants PIP or doesn't mind it, is really a huge error. But then again: without errors, no progress -
It's now been what? Two weeks? Still not a word of acknowledgement on this. Does it seriously take this long to add in a few lines of code to disable a feature?

It is acknowledged, status is "In progress". I don't like it either (I reverted back to previous version) but give them time to do it good now. I can imagine that it is much more then simply adding a few lines of code, other wise they would have done so already.

There are a lot of requests and problems mentioned by users that have to be solved by a team of 20 developers, which has Vivaldi. It is only logical that things less important on the list may take longer.
Patience -
@Catweazle Two weeks is a heck of a lot of patience for an icon literally shoved into every video element. I believe it must have been an accident due to the lack of an upside for Vivaldi, but this has burned through an unbelievable amount of goodwill.
In the end, at least if it's open source you can fix the fuckups yourself. x_x

@Catweazle
No patience. They should have given us a hotfix to optionally turn off the whole thing, and then implement all the necessary fixes and adjustments. This is so stupid to push an untested feature into stable without a switch.I am not bashing the devs, because mistakes like this happen from time to time. That's life. But I am fed up with all the patience and workaround comments in various threads on the forum. People have valid reason to be annoyed.

Just want to add that I also do not like this button being in all my videos. It's super annoying and I didn't want or ask for it. Please give me an option to disable it or remove it. I do not, nor do I ever intend to use PIP for anything, it's just not my workflow. And like I said only moments ago, this is hella annoying, like sometimes the button doesn't even go away in full screen and I just have to look at it, like it's winking at me in the face. Come on guys, you're making me do Austin Powers references now and that movies like over 20 years old!!! Please don't let a fix take that long.....
-
Indeed. Forget about my previous comments, just remove the entire icon. Installing updates, but still experiencing this bug is rather annoying. It shouldn't be too difficult to pull the feature until it's fixed.
-
@noroots It looks like you will be waiting for a while yet as it is now past the usual time for releasing Snapshots. You do not need to exit fullscreen to hide the icon. Click twice on the video or press spacebar twice. I assume that it is intentional to show the icon again when the mouse cursor is moved.
-
@noroots you can just downgrade to version 2.10 for the time being.
-
@Swashbuckler Downgrading is definitely not recommended.
Not only do you lose security updates, you may seriously damage your profile.
-
Yeah! I need this function as soon as possible...

I think what the developers are misunderstanding here and why they should definitely assign this issue higher priority is the violation of what is and until now was (at least for me and in my understanding) basic promise of Vivaldi - customize all the new stuff added on top of chromium.
In the years I've been using Vivaldi, this is the first time I am unable to customize an aspect of Vivaldi I wish to.
So in my opinion, that is the issue here, arguing usefulness of PiP is moot - pick any feature you can think of, ask 1000 ppl if they like it you'll get 2 opposing camps. Simple checkbox to toggle said feature appeases both. Just sayin'.

Gave a vote to the original post.
I just switched to Vivaldi from Opera a couple days ago. I'm quite impressed with Vivaldi so far; very feature-rich...and pretty to boot. However, I also find this picture-in-picture button to be a nuisance. Not because it's there (Opera had the same thing), but because it doesn't work correctly.
In Opera, it never appeared in fullscreen. And when not in fullscreen, it would only appear when you put your cursor over the video (and even then it would go away after four seconds of no movement). This never bothered me, but Vivaldi's implementation is a bit more intrusive, and I'm also struggling with the bug where it simply won't go away. (Note that my primary media consumption is through YouTube, so this is what my observations are based on.)
What attracted me to Vivaldi was the customization (it's not quite as flexible as some browsers-of-old, but certainly appears to be the best thing "on the market" today). As the post right above mine says, the fact that this feature didn't release with a simple toggle switch to turn it off seems to deviate from the Vivaldi philosophy.
So this is me throwing my long-winded two cents (so, I guess, maybe my fourteen cents) into the pot that I would like to see quick update to add a toggle button for this feature (and then an improvement to its functionality down the road).
Overall, kudos to the developers for making what appears to be a very nice web browser (the best from what I've used recently). It has a few things here and there I'd change, but no browser is perfect.

@APersonUsingVivaldi See my post above to learn how to hide the icon.
-
@Pesala indeed, don't consider downgrading an option. I'm also aware of the different workarounds to remove it in fullscreen, it's just very annoying. I'm on an ultrawide, only have to move the mouse to the corners in fullscreen, but then it comes back as soon as my mouse hovers on the video. Watching videos (especially on YT) is one of the most important use-cases for a browser. Would have expected the developers to pull the feature as soon as they found out about the bug, but I guess they decided to keep it because it was the highlighted feature for that release. This off course is an assumption, but I can't think of anything else.

Hey all! Yesterday's snapshot includes fixes for the Pop-out video feature. Those who can and want to, please test it out and leave your feedback in the comments. Please note that work on the feature is still ongoing.
Check out the Snapshot blog here: https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/desktop/tracking-blocker-vivaldi-browser-snapshot-1838-3/.

This is annoying me so much too. Button positioning is waaaay off, you can't move it to another place, you can't disable it and it even does not function properly on Youtube (mine just shows a black PiP with sound on the background). Sooo awful.
