How to fix broken sync?
-
I have multiple devices with Vivaldi Installed. For each I've setup Sync using my Vivaldi account and security password. Unfortunately, sync does not work quite well. Sometimes - in the past - bookmarks an extensions are synced allright and sometimes - particularly lately with new devices added - they're not.
Recently added bookmarks are not synced and yet each device reports that sync is fine.
I suspect that multiple sync instances exist at the Vivaldi sync server. Could this be the case at all?
What can I do to further investigate this?Could some expert write some guidelines to fixing a broken sync?
I also hope that we can get access to our online sync data, so that we can manage issues at the server.

@S_Paternotte Judging by the lack of response, it'd appear that I'm the only one suffering from sync problems across different platforms.
Anyways, here's what i tried for now.
- On one windows PC, I exported my bookmarks structure, disconnected from Sync and closed Vivaldi
- On all devices, I disconnected from sync and deleted all bookmarks and closed Vivaldi
- Then on the first windows PC, I started Vivaldi, imported the bookmarks and reconnected to sync, using a different encryption key
- Next, one at a time, I started Vivaldi on the other devices/platforms and reconnected to sync, using the new encryption key
Now all Vivaldi's have the same bookmarks set.
Next to do:- Experiment with adding/removing/moving bookmarks on the different devices/platforms and find out if these changes in fact sync
I definitely have a strong desire to be able to manage the sync data ON the Sync server.
Also, when establishing the sync for the first time, I would like to have some options as to what to do at first sync:
- Overwrite exisiting bookmarks structure with the bookmarks on the server (download)
- Merge local bookmarks with those on the sync server (upload/download)
- Replace bookmarks on the sync server with the local set (upload)

Please, report a bug

@lamarca I had filed a bug report: VB-55502, but I was hoping for some backup from the user group as well.
Meanwhile I can report that the procedure I had followed has worked. All my devices now show the same bookmarks structure and set. A few new bookmarks and deletions have also been synced across the different devices.

@S_Paternotte Sync is back for you, then.
Please, check the bug number again, there is no VB-55502. -
@lamarca Key: VB-55502

@S_Paternotte Thank you. It's VB-55502 with no comma:)
Sorry, my copy&pasted added the comma at the end of the number. -

Thanks for this report. I fully support the desire for managing all synced elements "in the cloud".
I don't have a broken sync (yet) but am still struggling to understand how it is supposed to work regarding using multiple devices. Are the bookmarks only merged when connecting the first time? In my understanding this must be the case because otherwise it would never be possible to delete any bookmarks since the deleted bookmark from device A is still on device B and when connecting device B it would be reinstated.
But how does Vivaldi decide if it is the first time a sync happens?
What happens when I log out from sync and have some manipulations in my bookmarks and then I'm logging in again? Will then again a merging happen? -
@goedl I reccon that deletions are time stamped actions and are thus synced across your devices. You can try and see for yourself with some dummy bookmarks.

@S_Paternotte well I have the same problem with 2linux PC and Android device. Happen before with the 2pc.
