Vivaldi asks for decryption password - I never set one
-
This issue is pretty annoying. I'm trying to log in to Vivaldi Sync via new computer, but Vivaldi asks for my encryption password. I never actually set one, "Encrypt data using a separate password" checkbox was left empty, and I did not entered a separate password for encryption.
Any workaround for this issue? I will not wipe my existing data. I'm successfully logged in on another computer without using encryption password.
Using latest version of Vivaldi on Windows 10.

@darx I think if you never set one, then it used your vivaldi.net account password. This was found to be confusing, and changed in newer versions so now you need to explicitly enter a separate one.
Does entering your vivaldi.net password work?
-
No it does not work. I can log in to Sync with vivaldi.net password, but when entering same password for "encryption password", it says "wrong password entered".
Does the encryption password have any limitations for password length or what characters can be used? My passwords are 32 characters long random sequences, like: I9l!i5;+ZksewN5.u3&/xvyR9?lMA&$; (that was not my real password).
-
@darx There is only an encryption password being set, when somebody enters one. I can't explain why it's set, if you never did it. The only way to get this running again is to reset your data in my opinion, which isn't a big deal should you still have everything local. You simply get Sync running again and then it will populate with the local data from your current installation.
-
I get it. I was changed my password, and my old password works to decrypt data.
How can I change my decryption password as well?
-
@darx To reset your encryption password you would need to "Reset Remote Data" (be sure that you have all the data you want to sync available locally first).
-
Unfortunately, to define your encryption passwd, Sync requires "Reset Remote Data", which means all your data will be erased.

@darx said in Vivaldi asks for decryption password - I never set one:

It has a minimum of 12 characters.
Which is quite excessive, actually, I had to come up with a completely new password. It would be helpful if this information (minimal length of a password) was displayed when entering the password. I have several standard passwords for non-critical systems (my browsing history is not that precious, after all, and Google at least probabaly has it anyway) and when there is a requirement for a long password, I just double my standard password. If I knew the minimum length were 12, I would not need to reset that password, I think.

I have the same problem. I just installed Linux and Vivaldi on a laptop and sync requires an encryption password that I have never set. Is there any risk of losing my local data like passwords etc. when choosing "Reset Remote Data"?
-
@Gwen-Dragon Now it works, thanks! Maybe my original password was too short and simple. After changing it it worked as the encryption password as well.
-
Sync not working at all. It accepts my Vivaldi password as login, then when prompted for an encryption password, it accepts nothing. Tapping the Continue bar does nothing. Using beta Android version.
-
@Gwen-Dragon The beta version I have is 2.11.1813.18, installed from the Google Play Store, on Android 6.0.1. I'm getting the same result as previously reported, tapping "Continue" on the second screen does nothing. There is a text on that screen that the password must be a minimum of 12 characters and the password meets that requirement.
I also have the Vivaldi Snapshot browser installed on the same phone, version 2.12.1847.3. Also tapping "Continue" does nothing.
-
@edwardp I faced a similar issue, if not the same. I tried logging in to my Vivaldi account on my phone and it asked me to create an encryption password, but the button wouldn't submit. The fix I found was setting the encryption password on the desktop browser, then logging in with that on the phone.
-
@vizentin I prefer not to use sync via the web browser, because I have far too many bookmarks in the desktop browser versus what is on my phone.
I'll just have to use the mobile version as is.

As a person who just wiped their computer and was trying to log back in. This SUCKS. I never told it to encrypt my stuff. Who the hell thought that was a great DEFAULT option..... Now Im on my new, freshly imaged machine, had to reset my account because the password requirements are stupid and couldnt remember password I set 2+ years ago, finally get logged in and BAM. My sync data is encrypted. which is a big deal because this SSD was wiped to put the new OS on it.... So I I cannot figure out the assinine old password, ive lost everything.... A++++ vivaldi... Was loving your browser until today. this is so stupid...
-
@Taeleus It sucks, but this is on you. No encryption would be the stupid thing. Looking forward you should get yourself a password manager and enter new data meticulously.
-
@Gwen-Dragon nah. Ive had to memorize like 3 different password/passphrases and for some reason I set a different one for vivaldi. Usually not a big deal, but if I knew it would encrypt all my backup stuff then I would have paid more attention.
-
@luetage Yes, its on me for forgetting my old password that I punched in once over 2 years ago. But if they would have notified that sync was encrypted I would have paid more attention to the password I set. Thats just a bad idea on vivaldi's part. Either default sync encryption to off, or at least inform your users that your encrypting it so we can be better prepared for moments like this. I know I goofed by forgetting my old password I used, but thats still dumb and frustrating as hell.

Been diving the settings and cant see an option to turn it off. For future reference, does anyone know of a way to turn off sync encryption?
-
just my two cents, google is able to keep backup and sync data even after password resets without requiring additional passwords for sync encryption. Insecure or not the reason I got into vivaldi was the tunability. I could make it mine and tweak just about anything and everything. Regardless of if its secure or not it would be nice if it was a setting I could turn on or off, or just link the sync with the account login so when I do a password reset, I dont have to remember the very password I reset to get around to get all my data back. Not trying to bark at the moon here just.... frustrated. Hope you understand and thank you all for your time.
