Add 'Folder' field to bookmark properties in bookmark panel.

Sometimes I know I have a page bookmarked, but it's not in the folder where I expect it to be. I can search for it, but there is no way to determine it's location. If I know it's current location, I may decide to leave it there, or move it. Currently, I have to actually open the page, and then use the 'add/edit bookmark' drop down in the address bar to see the current folder.

I see two options:

Add the folder drop down to the bookmark properties at the bottom of the panel, similar to the 'add/edit bookmark' drop down in the address bar. When searching, it will provide the location of the bookmark. When simply browsing, it will give the option to move it to a new folder as an alternative to drag/drop or cut/paste.
Add a right-click option to 'go to location' which takes you to the expanded folder where the bookmark resides.

@MoonDogg Right-click on the Bookmarks Panel, and open the Settings, Folder at the bottom of the menu. Select Tree Search.

Open the bookmark, and use Add Bookmark to move it to a different folder, or use Cut and Paste in the Bookmarks Panel.

I just stumbled upon the 'Tree Search' feature and came here to modify my post. It's helpful in determining the location of a bookmark when searching, but it still does not truly provide what I'm looking for.

Relocate Bookmark
The manual process you describe is precisely what my request is trying to avoid.

Browse to bookmark location
If I search for a bookmark, I would then like to easily browse to it's location, without having to memorize or take a screen clipping of the folder structure, and then manually browse there.

@MoonDogg A far simpler solution than extra menu items as I see it would be

You search
You click the bookmark to focus it
You click the (x) in the bookmark search box
It keeps the bookmark focused and in view, and any tree leading to it expanded

But yes, the current behaviour leaves something to be desired.

@LonM I would be fine with that, but it does not work that way for me. As soon as I click the 'x' to clear the search, the tree goes back to it's previous state.

I mean that currently you are correct and it is broken, and what I noted above was a potential better way that the devs could implement without having to create new menu items.

Although I never the bookmark panel, I fully support this change as the same issue occurs just with just Bookmark Page (Ctrl+D). No way to put
the new bookmarked page into a proper folder structure if it needs a new folder.
From what i have gleaned from posts on this topic, there are others, it is the way Chromium does things and we are supposed to adapt.
Throw my workflow right out the window having to spend an extra half an hour or more finding my new bookmarks to individually move them into a folder.
A workaround I use is creating an "_NewBMs" folder so I can more easily find them, then Move them to new topics in my bookmarks.

Yeah, we really should have the ability to create a new folder when creating a new bookmark. It is kind of nonsensical that the Android version of Vivaldi has more functionality than the desktop version in this respect. I know this is a requested feature from many people, so hopefully it will be implemented soon.

There is also a weird behavior in that Bookmark Page (Ctrl-D) popup dialog. The sort of the folders is not alphabetical. If you do go into your bookmarks collection and manually sort all of your folders into alphabetical order, then when creating a new bookmark finding the desired folder is more difficult than it really should be.

The easiest way is to quickly type the first few letters of the folder name. Repeatedly type the first letter to cycle through folders with that first letter. That works far better than scrolling through list, whether alphabetical or orders manually by your own logic.

There are a couple of assumptions that have to be true in order for that to work. All folders must be uniquely named, and you have to already know exactly which folder you want to put it in. When you've got a bookmark library approaching the size of mine, the first assumption is not always true, and the second assumption is often not true.

I've done pretty well at creating unique names, by putting context into parentheses. For example, Official Help & Documentation (Vivaldi), or Customization (Vivaldi Forum). Since the library has been built over many, many years however, this isn't guaranteed to always be the case.

The second assumption is the one that makes typing the folder's name impractical more frequently for me. I already do that when I can, but sometimes I want or need to look at what the descendants are in a specific part of the tree in order to know or decide in which folder the bookmark should be saved. Having the folders not well ordered makes this a pain point. I've done a pretty good job of manually organizing all the folders alphabetically, but it's not perfect and it takes a lot of time to do so.

Even when creating new folders, there's additional work that is unnecessary if the new bookmark dialog would sort the folders alphabetically. First, I create the folder in the wrong location, typically a sibling of the intended parent folder (I usually seek a sibling with few children as it makes the next step easier). Then I drag & drop the folder into its correct alphabetical location.

@bonetone With loads of folders you're going to have a hard time creating a new folder from the Add Bookmark dialogue. The Bookmarks Panel is better suited to organising bookmarks. Having created a new folder you can drag a URL to add a bookmark in the new folder.

No, not really. Not any harder than it is to add a bookmark to a folder in the first place. Adding a new folder is really no different than adding a new bookmark to a folder. By that logic we might as well just get rid of the folder list all together.

Edit, and yes, using the panel is part of my typical workflow. That doesn't mean that the ability to add a folder in the new bookmark dialog shouldn't be a feature. I'm not the only one requesting it.

@Pesala I will have to retry that. Previously when I Copied and Pasted the result was Pasted into the Bookmark's Search window, regardless of where the the focus was.
New version since then so I'll try again.
[EDIT] Work properly in the Android version.
