Solved Synchronization of entire history
-
I've just checked out Vivaldi and it is a great browser with a lot of customization and features but...for god's sake, why is it missing this important feature
-
Without fully sync history is a big flaw of this perfect browser.
I keep switching between Firefox and Vivaldi for work and entertaintment.
Please upgrade the history sync or recommend me a 3rd tool/add on/extension for fully sync history for Vivaldi -

"Sync in" is not working properly in mobile and desktop with same login id"
i can't see my mobile net surfing history on my desktop "in Vivaldi browser" and desktop net surfing history i can't see on my mobile "in Vivaldi browser"This is very annoying for me , i have successfully tried multiple times login and logout properly and enter encrypted key. But all of that's not working.

@Ayespy I love how you've made absolutely 0 contributions to this thread except for making excuses for this feature to not be standard in almost every comment of yours. Almost every comment of yours is a variant of "but resources, but only x people, but smol browser UwU"
Carry on, I guess.

Not a good way to introduce yourself to this forum. If users read the thread before posting, Ayespy and other regular helpers would not have to repeat themselves.
The request is old, and has many upvotes, but it is difficult to implement and would need hardware resources that Vivaldi cannot afford. The Team would likely have to modify the Chromium code and maintain the modifications in all future builds on all supported platforms.

Why modify Chromium codebase though? Chrome already offers history sync.
-
@TheBestPessimist Chrome sync on Google servers is an entirely different animal from Vivaldi sync.
-
@Ayespy On the one hand, yes, but on the other hand the code to do that is still there.
-
@TheBestPessimist Yes, but it can't be used for Vivaldi. Vivaldi has to write its own sync code and use its own servers. Syncing more history is probably in the cards, but it will not be done the same as Chrome.

I mean, it wasn't an 'introduction.' I was merely noticing a pattern, and making an observation.
-
@aindoria Yeah, no. It was not "merely noticing a pattern, and making an observation" but a passive-aggressive and sarcastic value judgment for a pointless personal attack against a moderator.
I read it and did not respond to it because it did not merit a response. But accusing a moderator of some kind of craven (what - fanboi?) motive is, yeah, not a good initial look.
I think (unless you understand better by now) you have so far imagined that Vivaldi could employ existing Chrome sync code to do sync work - simply plug in Chrome code as it were, and sail on without difficulty. Flip a switch. Cake. This is simply impossible. This is why Vivaldi had to write its own sync code and buy and deploy its own server farm to run it. This took over a year - and it's a work in progress. More and more things are synced with pretty much every update. This progress will continue. We may or may not ever reach a state that pleases everyone, but we will reach a state wholly supported by Vivaldi's code and servers. And month to month, year to year, it is likely to continue to be refined as the Vivaldi code and storage structure continues to evolve in response to changes in OSes, Chromium and user requests.
(So it's clear to you, Vivaldi's unique UI code and structure plus its unique storage structure, to say nothing of the fact that Chrome sync code uses Google servers are why Vivaldi cannot and never could, use Chrome sync code. For one thing, Vivaldi is syncing an entire code layer that does not even exist in Chrome or Chromium.)

Thank you. As I said before, synchronising history is more than just a wish for me. I understand that the developers are focusing on things that have higher priority, but I am glad to hear that this is in the works.

I see that Brave have now a full history sync via a flag to activate
#brave-sync-send-all-history .
If I'm right brave is open source so maybe vivaldi can use Brave code to implement full history sync as they don't use either chrome sync.
https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/16705Just an idea to speed-up the process.
-
@rom08 I think the point is "are the vivaldi servers ready to collect its users history?". Because is what brave flag does.
(If not applicable, a local export/import would be nice too) -
It took me a lot of time to understand that syncing is meant only to the cloud - but not between OSs.
Can the documentation be optimized?
This might save a lot of time for users. -
Is it a big thing to provide a feature that exports the history file (in Android version) to a csv file?
I refere to the information that is listed in the history paneel anyhow. -
Unfortunately not having history sync is a deal breaker for me.
I noticed how important this is when I spent the whole day visiting a website on my PC and when I picked up my smartphone to visit the same website, I saw that Vivaldi on the smartphone had no trace that I had even visited that website. Not to mention that without history sync, search suggestions on devices are greatly impaired, as they are only based on the individual history of each device.
In short, using Vivaldi, you would be highly dependent on Google or other search engine to search for website addresses that you saw on one device because Vivaldi on another device has no idea that you saw it. And if by chance you need to know the name of a website you visited on a device you no longer have access to, Vivaldi certainly won't help you with that.
And no, I'm not going to clutter up my bookmarks with hundreds of websites that I visit occasionally just so Vivaldi remembers them. This is not how I use bookmarks.
-
I upvoted this. Hopefully it gets implemented some day.
In the meantime, the History Trends Unlimited extension cap keep an unlimited history (i.e. bigger than the hardcoded 90 days limit in Chromium) and has an import/export feature. I use it to keep the histories in my several Vivaldi installations on different computers in sync.
