Better Scrollbars in Vivaldi
-
In a recent Snapshot, we improved the scrollbars in the browser’s UI. Vivaldi Designer Henrik Helmers explains how the team accomplished the styling of scrollbars.

I still see the old scrollbars in 1.16.1259.3 (Win 10/ Vivaldi 64bit)
-
@mtaki14: The latest snapshot is 1.16.1279.3 the updater is deactivated you need to download it manually from https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/improved-web-panel-and-speed-dial-suggestions/
-
I'm on osx using the latest snapshot. I didn't notice this improvement. The scrollbars are only themed on internal pages anyway, or? I think there was no change for regular websites, but maybe I'm just blind ^^
-
@zaibon: I know that this is not the latest snapshot. But this is the snapshot where the scrollbars mentioned in the article were supposedly introduced.
And I intentionally uninstalled 1.16.1279.3 and went back to a previous snapshot due to the plethora of problems it had.
-
@mtaki14 Ah okay, sorry
-
@luetage: You are absolutely not blind! This is for scrollbars in our UI. Modifying web view defaults can cause compatibility issues. Maybe something for the future, but I'm thinking it would be something you would have to opt into.

Do you want a version that does work with as few bugs as possible or are you more the adventurous type of user?In case you answer A: Be patient there are reasons other than just to annoy you personally why it takes so long
In case you answer B: You might want to take a look at the snapshot (beta) version of Vivaldi - they get updates about every 7-14 days (at least normally)
You can find the latest snapshot here: https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/improved-web-panel-and-speed-dial-suggestions/If you want to install both versions side by side I gladly volunteer to help you with this task.
-
@mtaki14: You should see new scrollbars in our UI. Web page scrollbars should look the same as before.
-
Same here (Windows 10, Version 1803, x64) with the latest Vivaldi build 1.16.1279.3.
I also tried a fresh Vivaldi profile but to no avail, the scrollbars (for UI elements) are still the standard Windows ones.
-
@helmers: I realize that, but Vivaldi's UI has the old scrollbars as well. e.g Notes scrollbars still have their standard appearance: https://i.imgur.com/TPCeGTF.png

Can you add an option to support native scrollbars, just like you support native window decorations? The chrome(-like) scrollbars are ugly and hard to use. Theming them with different colors is a good first step, but native ones as option will improve the experience a lot.
-
@mtaki14: It is not rounding scrollbars in that list, because the scrollable area is square. But if you look at the notes editor, it should be rounding the corners when themes are round. The fix was confirmed to be part of 1.16.1259.3, but based on the feedback maybe not so easy to spot.

Everything is possible, but it may not be easy. Do you have an example of what you would like to see (apart from "use native scrollbars")?
-
@helmers I can see that the Notes edit box corners are rounded by about 14 pixels, which is what my theme is set to use. However, other elements use a smaller radius. Speed dials are about 12 pixels, while tabs are much less. I am looking for something more like this Chosen Button Skin from Opera 12.18. Why don't the tabs respect the corner rounding radius?
-
@helmers: I second this request (pretty please!). I'm not sure what your question is addressing though. The request is simply "use the OS-native scrollbars instead of the custom/styled ones". I think Opera had the option to "allow scrollbars to be styled (yes/no)". That's what we're asking for.
No offense intended but, notwithstanding your good work, I personally very much dislike styled scrollbars and "overlay" scrollbars (at least on a desktop), especially when they omit the buttons. I prefer them to look and function like the rest of my desktop.
Thanks!!
