Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default
-
@7twenty , @Gwen-Dragon, @Pesala
Middle-click? I do not use a mouse !
Like many other people, I use laptops and tablets now, WITHOUT a mouse.So middle-click is not an option at all (and gestures and menus etc. either).
Let us the choice (on/off option) to open EXTERNAL pages in a new (background) tab, for all those that do find this convenient.and please as @Jon the founder always says: "Vivaldi is all about choice", not dogmatism.
-
Vivaldi has some great features and some not so great. Not having the option to open new tabs in the background by default is the one reason why it is another browser and not my default browser. Two years with a lot of pathetic excuses on this thread is sending Vivaldi to Revo Uninstaller and me sticking with Edge and Firefox.

@7twenty I do not have a mouse! most people use laptops and tablets now without a mouse.
And most laptops (that I've used, anyway) support "middle-clicking" using 3 fingers on the touch pad.

well be my guest and use your 3 fingers if that suits you. But for me 3 fingers is inconvenient.
I like to have this function as an OPTION, not as the default, so it would not affect your preferred way of using Vivaldi.
Again; Vivaldi is all about options as @Jon the founder always says: Vivaldi is all about choice: "... we build software based on flexibility and listening to our users. We make features that are requested by many and features that are requested by few."

@peefy , indeed. We are all about choice and providing options, so we need an option for this as well. Hopefully we can get to it soon.

@jon Wow thank you @Jon !!
Glad that opening external links in new background tabs is on your radar!Firefox always had extension "tab mix plus" doing this, but I am sure Vivaldi can do better!
@Jon Vivaldi just broke all records in superb customer support! I never had a CEO reacting in hours on a simple customer concern. That's why the best browser, just gets better and better!
Now looking forward to the long anticipated Vivaldi Mail Client M3 , so I can finally ditch the buggy Windows Mail. -

I know. My comment was made a bit tongue-in-cheek, though maybe that didn't quite go through in text.
I'd also like the option to change the default behaviour of links, but rather so that all links open in the current tab. And I don't believe that one is doable at the moment without either
Right-click -> Open Link
or a mouse gesture, so it has even fewer options than opening in the background. -

We will do our best to make the best implementation of this feature. When I chatted with the developer, he said that doing this right required a bit of work, so we will get this right. If not, I am sure you will let us know and we will improve.
I am also looking forward to showing M3 to you. We are getting there. A lot of activity.
Cheers,
Jon. -

@urfausto Well Vivaldi is working for years (behind the scenes) developing a world class email client. It is codenamed M3 as it is seen as the successor of Opera Mail 2 (M2).
The CEO of Vivaldi @jon , has just confirmed that the Technical Preview would be ready soon, somewhere in November. Keep your eye on the Vivaldi blog or community posts, it will be announced soon.more background info:

@peefy super! vivaldi never ends surprising...

Regarding the mail client, I have been waiting for it since 2017 when it was eagerly awaited. I'm still waiting. Surprisingly, my eagerness is not quite as high as it was back then.
I too would like to see right clicking on a link open it in a background tab by default. It's what I have been used to in Safari and it's driving me nuts! Here's hoping it can be made into an option in a little less time than four years...

@noseasons Check for updates. This option is now available in the latest Snapshot. (No doubt it will come to the next Stable if it does not break something else). See Settings, Tabs, Tab Display, Tab Options:

this is completely mindblowing. but one thing i don't understand, a general question: is rss feed available for any website? or is it a specific task implemented at discretion of the website?

@peefy the article about opening external links in new tabs is really great and illuminating! Thank you! I had the same impression, but now I also know the reasonable arguments for this!

Thanks @horia , for me it is the natural way I expect my browser to work (firefox had the nice extension tab mix plus for this). Not everyone agrees with this. but that's fine. Luckily Vivaldi adapts itself to the user, and not the other way around. I cannot thank @jon enough for giving us this wonderful browser (now even with email/rss build-in!), and the wonderful Vivaldi community around it!
