Option to Open a URL / Search Results in a New Tab from the Address Bar with "Enter"
-
For users who do not deal with lots of forms and need to refer to other pages continuously while working, I believe this feature option is not a big deal.
But for me, it is REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLY a big pain point losing the data you filled in the form just because you forget to press the ALT.....SHIFT.......(or sth else) before opening another URL with the data you needed in the address bar.
Anyway, it is your team's decision to either do me a favor to implement this feature helping me out of the nightmare, or just ignore the pain I got and keep your belief on the hotkeys.
Thank you for developing such a good replacement of Chrome! But I am not so happy with what is going on in this thread.
BTW: Please stop suggesting use the Hotkeys to open address bar in new tab in this thread, I believe people responding in this thread is asking for that option because they feel the pain of forgetting pressing the HOTKEY.

+1 to that. Done that way too many times.

This feature request shows no indication of being implemented any time soon, so people who want the option need to know possible workarounds. What you're effectively saying makes no sense at all.
Let users suffer loss of data in forms because they do no know about using Quick Commands or the Search Field.

To be honest, I think 99% of users that need new tab from address bar to be opened by enter key already know that there are shortcuts and hotkeys. The problem is that some are refusing to understand why we don't won't to use extra steps for default actions. I don't need it sometimes to open in new tab which in that case, option to use hotkeys would be perfect. We need it every time.
We can reverse it. What would happen if the default action for enter is to open new tab and only way to open address in the same tab is via hotkey? And you cannot change to default action? Would like to be forced to use hotkey to open link from address bar in the same tab every time and for an action that you use hundreds time a day? No you would not.
This feature is very important. Some like to overwrite current tab, some want to open in a new tab. We need to be able to choose what default action key will do.
Devs neither do understand this need, nor they care. It is that simple.
If you are a young browser, trying to get a bigger piece in the cake, than this approach of not caring for it's users needs to change. As a developer, I can guarantee you that this feature is very simple to develop.

@Pesala
For myself,
I suffer loss of data in forms, NOT because I do not know about using Quick Commands or the Search Field.
I suffer loss of data in forms, because sometime I forget to "Press Alt or Shift + Enter" or "Use the Quick Commands dialog" while I am trying to input an address and open it.Anyway, I am switching to SlimJet [https://www.slimjet.com/] which has the option I needed.
I would implement this and create the PR for you guys if allowed. So disappointed.

A huge upvote from me on this one. I switched to Vivaldi recently and the lack of "open in new tab on Enter" is the biggest missing feature. In my workflow this results in lots of frustration and annoying extra steps (type in address, press enter, realize I just lost the web page I was using, click "back", type address again, press shift+enter).

This suggestion is an addition to already existing suggestion Option to Open a URL / Search Results in a New Tab from the Address Bar with "Enter". If I start typing in the address bar and then select one of the suggestions by clicking left mouse button I want it to open in a new tab. In other words, in conjunction with the suggestion cited above, I want to be in a situation when taking a default action (in this case left mouse button click) does not result in data loss. The problem is already solved for the search bar and bookmarks menu. Only the address bar remains to be fixed.

Would you count holding a modified key while clicking the mouse?

Would you count holding a modified key while clicking the mouse?
No. The point is to be able to change the default way of opening pages from the address bar. BTW the modifier already works - holding Ctrl and clicking will open in a new tab, but that requires using two hands.
-
@killy9999 If you have a MMB that requires only one hand.
-
Indeed, and that's what I'm using for the time being. But being able to change the default behaviour is what I really need. Firstly, I want a consistent controls for the whole interface. At the moment I use LMB in the search bar but MMB in the address bar. Secondly, LMB is easier to click than MMB.
-
@killy9999 Same for me. I've switched from Firefox, and I miss this a lot.

I see this not implemented yet...
i requested it on discord numerous times but was always told "use the F2" function...
i dont want to use the F2 function, how hard can it be to have the option in the address bar settings: "Open Address in new tab" and now there is Alt+Enter and Shift+Enter, just add one more option -> only Enter (od just Enter)...
-
+1 for this feature request.
It's easy to implement, it doesn't break existing workflows, it will solve an important issue for some of the users. In the long run , using ALT ENTER or F2 are not suitable alternatives : it's literally telling people they need to spend twice as much keypresses/time to do the same operation. Multiply that that the number of times we use the url bar a day, over years, this is a ridiculous amount of extra keypresses and wasted time that could be alleviated with a simple option.
-
@cannibalox I don't see why it has not been done yet — it seems to be very easy to implement. However, Shift+Enter or Alt+Enter do not take twice as long as using Enter on its own. Shift+Enter is easy to do with one hand.

That's true it doesn't. But what does take longer is having to think about whether you should do shift+enter or just enter. Then accidentally hitting just enter, and having to go back, or even worse lose an entry in a field because of it.
Really wish a reason was given as to why it hasn't been looked at. Really does seem nothing more than a copy paste of the code, just remove the alt/shift bits.
-
@Pesala maybe not twice as long but pressing a single key is still faster than any 2-key shortcut. and after 10 years of pressing twice the amount of keys for the same action, you'll notice the difference.
We could also talk about people with disabilities...This feature request seems straightforward and quick to implement, but maybe it has some major technical difficulties ? either way I think we would like a clear reply :
. it is too difficult to implement
. we don't care
. super low priority (wait another 5 years)the official reply which is : use
alt/shift + enter
orF2
is not helping, it only shows that they don't understand the issue. -

For like a week. After that it becomes "muscle memory", just like hitting Ctrl-Enter to add .com to whatever you've typed. It's really not the enormous issue some are making it out to be. I say this as someone who prefers to almost always have anything & everything open in a new (almost always background) tab.
The only way it doesn't become essentially automatic is if one doesn't make use of it frequently, but then it's a rare issue and again not a major problem.
Then accidentally hitting just enter, and having to go back
Ctrl-W, Ctrl-L, Ctrl-Enter
Super quick, and you don't even have to change the modifiers.

Please do so. How is that related?
