Vivaldi for iOS
-
It would have been better to build Vivaldi on Webkit or Gecko to begin with.

As a frequent user and someone who recommends Vivaldi to friends and co-workers, I can say it is a hard sell when people can’t sync bookmarks to IOS. Let’s face it, most browsers are just re-skinned versions of Safari with bookmark sync. Most people are ok with the limited experience on IOS and would welcome just being able to sync from IOS to the desktop browser. I personally believe this is the biggest thing that holds up Vivaldi. I am not a developer and it is easy for my to make suggestions to a great free browser developed by others.
-
@appleseed21 I was in that category myself, wanting the same browser on mobile and desktop for Sync for the longest time.
Switching to 1password.com for my passwords and Raindrop.io for bookmarks was the best decision I've made in a long time...

@ian-coog said in Minor update for Vivaldi Desktop Browser 4.3:
@rebub by googling you can find this q/a:
Q: "Is Chrome on iOS just safari?" A: "As you might have heard, Google Chrome is now available for the iPhone and iPad, but before you get too excited, you need to realize that it isn't Chrome at all. It's Apple's Safari with a 'chrome' interface. The actual browser, the rendering, and javascript engine is 100% Apple Safari."
So, if not even Google is allowed by Apple to make their browser available on iOS, Vivaldi won't be allowed either.

There might be a way to do it, see this post.

What engine is Vivaldi built on? I’ll intervene and ask apple myself to allow that.
-
@hmpbs Chromium.
Apple only allows Apple webkit browsers on iOS, so "Chrome" on iOS is rebuilt from the ground up on Apples' webkit.

Having just bought a large screen iPad I was somewhat surprised to see that there's no Vivaldi available. I use Vivaldi everywhere else... What I wanted to contribute to this discussion is the opinion that even if Vivaldi is limited to being a "re-skin" of Chromium iOS it could add a lot of value:
- the whole synchronization feature (bookmarks, notes, history, passwords, ...)
- power-user features such as tab stacks
- ad block, no-tracking
One thing to consider about iOS vs. Android is tablet support. There is a decent market for large high-end iOS tablets whereas tablet support in Android is pretty lackluster (sadly), so desktop features that make little sense in Android ('cause too few tablet users) could really distinguish Vivaldi on iOS...

@almarma I jusst want Vivaldi for iPad. I switched from Opera because of the shady things have been doing and their new owners.
-
I find this to be a real travesty. I used Vivaldi for years on Windows and Android... about a year ago I switched to apple devices (for various reasons) and much to my disappointment, there was nothing for iOS. Firefox, Opera and many others didn't have a problem with working with Apple's setup, but Vivaldi just threw in the towel over 'restrictions' and blah blah. After like 5 years of using it as my main browser on my phone and PC, my favorite browser will have to take a back seat to something different. Very sad day for me as I loved everything about Vivaldi, especially as a power-user who loves blatant and endless customization and full control. Perhaps the dev team should get onboard the mac train considering there are billions of iPhone and apple users instead of tinkering with new 'features'. Put all that brain power towards something more useful... like a browser that's fully cross-platform and doesn't lock you in to Windows and Android lol. Food for thought. I've seen a lot of corporate BS in my day and it's usually those corporates and devs that over-think instead of meeting the demand and end up selling themselves short.

From reading comments on our blog posts and social media, it looks like there's still a lot of confusion as to whether Vivaldi will be available on iOS or not.
So, to clarify: yes, there will be an iOS version of Vivaldi. We want to make it happen.
However, it is a big task, requiring manpower, resources and time. We can't offer any deadline or approximate date of release at this point. First, we want to make sure that we offer you a high-quality product when we're ready.

I'd also like to add that I would very much see Vivaldi for iOS developed.
I would also very much like to use this on my iPad (as others have mentioned.)
This is what I noticed in the UA string on my desktop computer that uses Windows 10 for the Vivaldi browser.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/100.0.4896.92 Safari/537.36
Run a computer consulting business and am in IT.
Have had many clients asking me when they can use Vivaldi for iOS
I told them good things come to those who wait.
And in conclusion Vivaldi is one of the best of the browsers I have ever seen. I LOVE IT -

I agree with @bibbinut that this is great to hear! I also know that it's a big engineering project.
Have you considered a fund raiser (think Kickstarter but could be wherever)?
I would personally put in $20-$50 to make Vivaldi on iOS happen.
Thanks for the excellent browser.

@mkennedy Thank you for the suggestion. For now, we're not planning to start any fundraising projects. The best way in which you can help us is to spread the word about Vivaldi.
See other ways to contribute. -
No reply to this required; I write only to add my voice to the many calls for an iOS version. Vivaldi is must workhorse on both Windows and MacOS, and the syncing is a real boon to me. Now that I have migrated from Android to iOS I find the absence of Vivaldi on iOS almost painful. Brave and DuckDuckGo are great but do not sync with Vivaldi, obviously, so it doubles the work involved for what is so simple with synced Vivaldi.
Not having an iOS app is a real Achilles' heel, and probably prevents greater take up of this great browser.

Why on earth would anyone ever do that?!?
-
@ayespy Because the iPhone does a damn sort more than my well-priced but underwhelming Android phone can do. And since both Apple and Google are hardly privacy heroes, at least Apple does not sell as much personal data to third parties as Apple.
Anyway, if I am going to get grief from a "Moderator" about personal choices that are none of their concern then I will quickly be out of here and just run with Brave, which does have an iOS app.
