Vivaldi for iOS

@Knuthf
You think Apple is spying? Microsoft is worse. Windows 10 is one huge piece of spyware. -
(Putting my Mod hat on) Please, this has been a nice, quiet discussion so far.
Let's not start discussing or debating stuff like this here, or taking this thread off-topic. Thanks! You think Apple is spying? Microsoft is worse. Windows 10 is one huge piece of spyware.

@xyzzy Even Opera took a long time to make Opera Mini for iOS (tho Opera has since silently killed off Opera Mini for iOS) and I do remember the post when they announced it and then it was many months later before they released it. Also for many years iOS and macOS the code was a little different between the 2 OSes. A lot of people don't relive how much time and energy has to go into programing software and how each platform has its own restrictions and other requirements.
-
Will it ever happen? For years now I have had macOS Vivaldi, I continue to use it for specific tasks but have held back from using it as my default because I cannot use it across all my devices. It really is a great browser but as I constantly swap between devices I really need a browser that syncs between them all.

Heard that Google forked webkit to make blink. Maybe it could be possible. But yea iPhone's suck all together.
Coming from Linux i like to feel like I can customize my phone to the way i like and with iPhone's you get what you get.
You can change some things and add a few widgets but that's about it when if comes to trying to make your phone yours.
Now i don't like android phones cause android sends 20% more data then apple. But still rather be on android for the customization.
Once Linux phones start getting better
With better specs. I'm moving to Linux phones. -
@xyzzy I hate to say it but until Vivaldi can compete with the "big four" it's never going to be considered a competitive browser. There really are only two real platforms Macintosh and Windows(sorry Linux). If a browser cannot compete on them both it's doomed to be relegated to eventual obscurity. As good as Vivaldi is it can only be a part time browser for any Mac user if it has no continuity with Apple's portable devices.

@Annerod I did not mean for my last post to have a pessimistic tone. Looking at that interview video with @jon from almost a year ago, it's clear that Vivaldi really wants to release a version of Vivaldi on iOS. Fortunately and unfortunately, they also will not share any news with us until they have something to announce... and I respect them for that.
-
It would have been better to build Vivaldi on Webkit or Gecko to begin with.

As a frequent user and someone who recommends Vivaldi to friends and co-workers, I can say it is a hard sell when people can’t sync bookmarks to IOS. Let’s face it, most browsers are just re-skinned versions of Safari with bookmark sync. Most people are ok with the limited experience on IOS and would welcome just being able to sync from IOS to the desktop browser. I personally believe this is the biggest thing that holds up Vivaldi. I am not a developer and it is easy for my to make suggestions to a great free browser developed by others.
-
@appleseed21 I was in that category myself, wanting the same browser on mobile and desktop for Sync for the longest time.
Switching to 1password.com for my passwords and Raindrop.io for bookmarks was the best decision I've made in a long time...

@ian-coog said in Minor update for Vivaldi Desktop Browser 4.3:
@rebub by googling you can find this q/a:
Q: "Is Chrome on iOS just safari?" A: "As you might have heard, Google Chrome is now available for the iPhone and iPad, but before you get too excited, you need to realize that it isn't Chrome at all. It's Apple's Safari with a 'chrome' interface. The actual browser, the rendering, and javascript engine is 100% Apple Safari."
So, if not even Google is allowed by Apple to make their browser available on iOS, Vivaldi won't be allowed either.

[Recommending Vivaldi] is a hard sell when people can’t sync bookmarks to IOS.
There might be a way to do it, see this post.
-
What engine is Vivaldi built on? I’ll intervene and ask apple myself to allow that.
-
@hmpbs Chromium.
Apple only allows Apple webkit browsers on iOS, so "Chrome" on iOS is rebuilt from the ground up on Apples' webkit.

Having just bought a large screen iPad I was somewhat surprised to see that there's no Vivaldi available. I use Vivaldi everywhere else... What I wanted to contribute to this discussion is the opinion that even if Vivaldi is limited to being a "re-skin" of Chromium iOS it could add a lot of value:
- the whole synchronization feature (bookmarks, notes, history, passwords, ...)
- power-user features such as tab stacks
- ad block, no-tracking
One thing to consider about iOS vs. Android is tablet support. There is a decent market for large high-end iOS tablets whereas tablet support in Android is pretty lackluster (sadly), so desktop features that make little sense in Android ('cause too few tablet users) could really distinguish Vivaldi on iOS...
-
@almarma I jusst want Vivaldi for iPad. I switched from Opera because of the shady things have been doing and their new owners.
-
I find this to be a real travesty. I used Vivaldi for years on Windows and Android... about a year ago I switched to apple devices (for various reasons) and much to my disappointment, there was nothing for iOS. Firefox, Opera and many others didn't have a problem with working with Apple's setup, but Vivaldi just threw in the towel over 'restrictions' and blah blah. After like 5 years of using it as my main browser on my phone and PC, my favorite browser will have to take a back seat to something different. Very sad day for me as I loved everything about Vivaldi, especially as a power-user who loves blatant and endless customization and full control. Perhaps the dev team should get onboard the mac train considering there are billions of iPhone and apple users instead of tinkering with new 'features'. Put all that brain power towards something more useful... like a browser that's fully cross-platform and doesn't lock you in to Windows and Android lol. Food for thought. I've seen a lot of corporate BS in my day and it's usually those corporates and devs that over-think instead of meeting the demand and end up selling themselves short.

From reading comments on our blog posts and social media, it looks like there's still a lot of confusion as to whether Vivaldi will be available on iOS or not.
So, to clarify: yes, there will be an iOS version of Vivaldi. We want to make it happen.
However, it is a big task, requiring manpower, resources and time. We can't offer any deadline or approximate date of release at this point. First, we want to make sure that we offer you a high-quality product when we're ready.
