Why the new Vivaldi icon? Here's why.
-
I can't help finding great humor in the variety and intensity of human reactions to a simple icon. Plus it goes a long way to illuminating the variety and intensity of user reactions in the forums and blog comments about the various evolutions in Vivaldi's feature-set and functionality. As users, we sure seem to be an opinionated and contentious lot at times...
-
For what I care V icon could be simply a V tick sign, I care of the quality of the browser.
-
I prefer the old icon. Not sure why - I was used to it, I don't like change for the sake of change, the old one just a cleaner look to it.
-
Well put me down in the "no" camp, sorry.
As I said on the 1.11 release blog, I find the new version more cluttered and looks much less clean than the old one.
I'm still waiting for a poll where we can measure the community reaction...
Edit: also, no one else mentioned it yet, but for me the angles of the V combined with the non-parallel curves of the squircle actually result in a nauseating optical illusion... I don't see a circle - it looks fatter at the bottom than at the top and slightly off-centre... And that makes the square look not-square and off-centre as well. It's quite unpleasant for me!
Edit again: also the smaller rendering of the stylised V is less well defined since you're trying to get too much detail into not many pixels. This is especially noticeable on my home desktop monitor and laptop screen which are both scaled since they're less than 1920*1080. The old icon looked fine though.

I like the new icon
-
I think having to somehow justify design choices to the community doesn't seem right the icon blends better with webpage color changes and custom themes which especially shows on Redmond and plain white themes plus i am sure the icon will flow of the much larger overhaul and really as long as everything is functional beauty is in the eye of the beholder besides art is subjective i place media fixes and stability and new features over design of one little icon
-
i know the black squircle, for beta snapshot, the red for final version, but the green one for what?
-
@logytech It's the internal test version -- comparable to Canary in Chrome, just not open to the public.
-
I came to the blog for a snapshot, c'mon....
Seriously, the new icon is fine, things need to change.. -

The old one was better.
Old was better - it was white on red and new is red on white on red (2vs3) And the V was bigger -
While I'll miss the transparency around the old icon's borders, I like the new icon a lot! It does look friendlier with it's roundedness, as you'll find a lot of the time that rounded corners are more approachable and it's why people tend to like it a lot better.
Will the stock SD thumbnails for vivaldi.com and .net also change, or will they stay the same? Will the .net favicon and site icon also change as well?
Going forward, will the UI get a refresh like the icon did? I wouldn't mind a more rounded appearance for things like the buttons on the address bar. I know Opera Reborn/Neon look very nice and modern, and it would be great if V's design evolved in a similar way as well.
-
Actually FWIW, in the example of discarded icons, I quite like the middle one on the top row, almost reminds me of Stumble Upon
-
@margarita I Feel that the new icon is appealing. May I be allowed to ask what may appear to be an off-subject question? How/may I change the color on Windows 10
-
Why didn't you wait for the major version 2.0? Anyway. Please make big version of the icon for Windows 10 start menu tile.

Pretty sure that most have never designed their own web browser, or any other program for that matter. But if they had, I guarantee that there would not be a 100% consensus on their chosen icon design either. For me, the function and comfort of use of Vivaldi's browser is relevant and Vivaldi is well on it's way of continuing successes.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth - be grateful. Stepping down from my soapbox now... -
I agree with someone that said in another article that it looks like a condom package. That was more or less my first impression.
It looks as someone tried to make it very friendly but the effect is that it looks cheap and childish for a browser. If you were targeting children I would probably agree but power users? A web browser? I don't think so.
Also, while the logo looks ok in your blog post, the only reason is because of its size. Logos look better when they are big, not so when they are favicons or icons (very small). Try pinning it to the taskbar and see how it looks. Or just look it from very far away from your screen.
Is it a rounded shape? No, is it a square? No. It has zero personality.
It loses the form and shape on smaller sizes. Again, the corners are overdone. If Vivaldi is not sure about the logo, then do what other companies do. Open a design contest and let the community sent their proposals and then let them vote the one they like the best. The end decision should always rely on Vivaldi's part, but the vote would at least give them some feedback on what users prefer.

There, this took me 5 minutes using your existing previous designs:
https://screenpresso.com/=DD53dThis is what I mean about the rounded borders. And I like that V better, it makes a better fit for a square as opposed to your current V that fits better a circle. Add some gradient if you wish and call it a day.

When the icon changed, I didn't give it that much thought. Changing graphic design concepts for UI, product logos, icons, etc. is a normal process and I didn't see any need to scrutinize it, so I didn't really pay much attention to it. The new icon was similar enough to what I was used to that I could find it in my taskbar (essentially it continued to identify your product), and that was all that mattered.
Now that I am looking at your little animated graphic showing the old and new icon, I find that I actually like the old icon better than the new one. The new one looks a bit too much like an Android/iPhone app icon.
Granted, like I said, it doesn't matter. It still identifies the product, and it's not like it actually looks bad or anything.

@Kadae Ha, this is hilarious! Haters really are small-minded strange people. Three people upvoted you [as revealed by hovering], & also my post before you, yet the visible count for each of us is only 1 [at time of writing this post]... meaning that the invisible haters downvoted us both. I am constantly amused & gobsmacked at how weirdly silly such people are. To all these haters -- it's just an icon; have a sense of proportion [not to mention a sense of humour].

@Nekomajin Further to my last post, in fact it appears now that everyone who complimented the squircle has been substantially downvoted. What sad little lives these invisible micro-minds must have. I pity them.
