Inspecting the Vivaldi UI with DevTools
-
@Steffie I'm not sure about the part you quoted, what I did was set the relevant flag in Vivaldi, then to inspect I just secondary-click on whatever I want and choose inspect from the context menu. Additionally, in the dev tools on the upper left there's a mouse pointer icon and clicking that will allow you to click on whatever you want to inspect Werth the normal primary mouse button click. Once the flag is set, inspecting is always available.

@BoneTone Oh wow, fabbo -- ta muchly! When i read the method to which you [i presume] refer...
@luetage said in Inspecting Vivaldi's UI with devtools:
Enable “Debugging for packed apps” in vivaldi://flags to switch the flag permanently.
...i failed to grasp its significance, & so tried instead that other method about which i posted. But "your" method is much better, cos having it permanently available in the right-click context menu is far neater & consistent.
Also, yes i entirely failed to notice that upper rhs arrow icon... but it no longer matters now.
Yippee, now i should be able to reduce my V to a smouldering broken ruin in no time flat.

@BoneTone I asked about pinning it in 2017; the original post has been bookmarked 15 times since then. Which is quite the amount considering few forum users know how to internally bookmark posts.
@Steffie I’m running it with the permanent flag myself, since I mod regularly. But if you just wanna quickly look something up from time to time, visiting settings and opening devtools is probably the most convenient way.

I'm one of those people who knows about it, and unfortunately I cannot make it 16 as I'm one of those 15 already.
I need to clean my forum bookmarks though. There are some threads which I don't really need and are cluttering these bookmarks to make them more difficult to use (this is not one of those, obviously, I want this thread to be even easier to find). I'm not certain, but I don't think we can search our forum bookmarks.
Hopefully this fans the flame of the idea, and it'll be pinned soon. I agree that 15 is quite a significant number of bookmarks, as it's not a very discoverable feature. Voting is more discoverable; this thread ranks 12th in this category, and it's not even an actual mod. (My recent vote did not change its rank, but it's only 3 votes away from the top ten.)
Edit: However, if you add the votes my recommendation to pin this thread to the OP's votes, it is in the top ten.

I always thought the number means how many bookmarks I have from the user
Btw., these forum bookmarks aren’t useful for linking posts (for me) coz they’re too hard to reach & search. I either search my browser bookmarks (if I’ve bookmarked the thread) or (if it’s pinned) go to the category & copy the link there or (if I don’t have it bookmarked & it isn’t pinned) search by its title.

This isn't about the setting to be able to inspect Vivaldi's UI, but to make things easier to use there are also actions to which you can assign keyboard shortcuts (as well as a mouse gesture I think) to 1) open the dev tools, and 2) open dev tools with the inspect element already activated -- as if you had clicked the mouse cursor icon in dev tools. As always, I recommend customizing the shortcuts & gestures to whatever makes the most sense for you; both in terms of ease of use as well as ability to remember.

Well now you've just made me very sad, coz the answer to that riddle is usually zilcho.

I have set the bookmarks as my forum "homepage" or whatever it's called in the profile settings. So when I click "forum" at the top of any page, it loads my bookmarks.
search by its title
Which only works if you recall its title. Luckily this one wasn't too difficult to find as I just searched for the single word "inspect" in titles only in this category only. But that doesn't help newcomers, and there are plenty of threads it'd take more work for me to find via searching.

I use it for unread coz that highlighted button, together with the path (home/undread), would otherwise be driving me crazy.

If we were doing this in bash than we could have a nice alias, like maybe Clouseau.

Eh, just look at your keyboard configuration, and think about the ergonomics of the shortcuts. This is even better if you can modify your keyboards firmware. I've got some modifier keys that are Ctrl-Shift, Ctrl-Alt, Meh & Hyper.‡ I also make use of dual-function keys, which are keys that send one thing when tapped and something else when held. So I have placed Meta, Alt, Ctrl and Shift under my home row keys (asdf & jkl;) from outside to in. I don't need to move my hands off the letters for single modifier shortcuts, and multiple modifier shortcuts are still only two keys rather than 3, 4 or 5.
When creating your keyboard shortcuts & mouse gestures, come up with a semantic scheme. Shift means reverse/backwards of an action when added to another shortcut, Ctrl-Shift is for Panel actions, Alt does a similar but different action when added to a shortcut (like Ctrl-T for new tab, Ctrl-Alt-T for new background tab, or vice versa depending on your preferences.
For mouse gestures a few strokes will have some meaning, then adding another stroke determines the action on that meaning. With my tab bar on the left, starting with a left stroke will be some tab action, the panel on the right, some panel action. For instance left up/down switches to the next tab up or down, right up/down switches to the next panel up or down; a counterclockwise box starting at the bottom left means tab group, then up is create, down is destroy & left is remove.
To make use of a significantly large number of actions, you'll need to create cheat sheets at first, I taped mine above my desk. After a few weeks, I didn't need them anymore and just put them in a file near my desk.
‡ Meh = Ctrl-alt-shift & Hyper = Meta-ctrl-alt-shift, whew meta is sometimes called Win or Command.

?Not a button, but a separate device (or two) with lots & lots of buttons, making the "mouse" unnecessary. I prefer to not even have a mouse on my desk.

They cause me distress. I prefer velcro or zippers, or even zyppers, albeit pacman is best of all.

I rewrote the whole thing and made a guide out of it. Please tell me whether the instructions for Windows are correct, I can’t test it. I’d also like to know whether all of this is comprehensible.

Open vivaldi://experiments.
Search for the Chromium flag “Debugging for packed apps” and enable.
Restart Vivaldi.vivaldi://experiments
? Are you sure? Notvivaldi://flags

@hlehyaric This is definitely wrong. Nicely spotted.

@luetage You're welcome. Your guide is a great job, thanks.

@luetage One word: Brilliant! Bookmarked!
Uh, two words; brilliant, bookmarked & beneficial.
Um, three words; brilliant, bookmarked, beneficial & ...
I'll come in again.

@Steffie Wait, you hadn’t bookmarked it yet? And to add injury to insult you want a snake to bite me? Shocked… I can’t even…
